The label "African American" is the dumbest used phrase in our vocabulary. Every time you call someone an "African American," you're making at least two assumptions about the person:
1. That the person is an American.
For example, if you saw actor chiwetel ejiofor walking along on a street, you would probably think, “Hey, there’s an African American”...which is fine, except for one small detail: this man is British, which makes you a presumptuous cock.
2. That the person is African (because it's inconceivable that black people could come from Haiti, India, Trinidad, Dominican Republic, Brazil, Australia, or Jamaica).
Ohhh, Nevermind that; BLACK PEOPLE ONLY COME FROM AFRICA.

Matzeliger was also half German. His father was a fairly wealthy man, and it sounds like he was advantaged in his youth because of said lineage. The shoe style he invented the machine for was for European style leather shoes. I think this one stays firmly with those of European descent.

When I read about the arguments for dropping African-American, I honestly roll my eyes. This happen in the political chat before.
I think it's trivial because ultimately, most people will know it means black. If someone says itallian American, I know they white.
It's trivial and I'm capable of reading between the lines. America values individualism after all. If you want to be prideful, so be it, it's a right. It's the reaction that's not protected.
But in the overall picture, it's my opinion, I take issue with being lumped into American.
I personally would have rather be able to state I am: German, British, or Canadian.
Based on my experience growing up in the US, American is a stained label. If I could emmigrate legally, I'd follow Teddy's advice and begon tomorrow.
Of course that's my opinion.
