On a related note, castoreum -- an extract of beaver anal glands -- is used as vanilla flavoring in some food products.

Ever eaten anything that was artificially colored red?

You were eating a (very small amount) of these dudes, dried and ground up.

MMMMMMM, right!?

I know this, but on the other hand, i have an irrational borderline phobia dislike of roaches, so that's still a hard no for me.

Scientists sequenced the genes for the milk protein to reproduce the substance in a lab. "The crystals are like a complete food -- they have proteins, fats and sugars. If you look into the protein sequences, they have all the essential amino acids," researcher Sanchari Banerjee told the Times of India.

So why not? We eat so much junk food already, guess this can't be worse.

It's like they chose the most repulsive thing possible to conduct food research around.

If there is merit to it though, it won't stop anyone. Package/process it right and people will not care.

In the end they won't call it Cockroach Milk,
it'll be called something people can't pronounce and be in everything.

I'm in.

There is probably loads of awful shit in our food that we don't know about and would shock us if we visualised it as an actual thing. Hell, sweets are probably full of colouring that is probably bug crushing.

Roaches survive everything, might be some good stuff.

I don't know if I could bring myself to drink from a bottle labeled "Roach Milk," but I agree.

Just need a good name. I'm coining Critter Crystals.

Figures we'd have to rely on the aliens to get us some scifi sustenance. I'm all for it if they can make it taste okay.

Edit: ITT how many people grossed out by this have ever enjoyed some honey?

I mean, is it really that bad if they make it in a lab instead of harvesting it from cockroaches? Take out the roach from the equation and I'd eat it.

You all are being ridiculous.

While not knowing where things like pigments and flavor additives and whatnot come from if this makes you squeamish.

its inevitable that people will subsist on insects one day

the indoctrination has already begun with seafood

I'm down. I think our conditioned aversion to insects as a source of nourishments needs to end. Especially if it helps solve global hunger, and ends up being better for the planet.
