A robber posing as a customer took a dozen not-yet available for sale video game systems from a GameStop store near Matthews.

PlayStation Portable - the current rage for gamers - goes on sale nationwide after midnight tonight. Some Charlotte-area stores are opening at that hour to sell the $249 handheld devices, known as PSPs.

The GameStop on Galleria Boulevard had 12 taken Tuesday night, when a man went into the back storage room just after 7 p.m. and helped himself, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police report.

When a clerk confronted him, he tried to knock her glasses off her face. She was not seriously hurt.

A robber posing as a customer...

Uhh...was he REALLY posing as a customer? Like, did he carry around bags from all sorts of other stores in the mall, bump into a few people and whistle along with the Muzak? I'm just trying to figure out how you pose as a customer here, and it doesn't work for me.

He'll get caught if he tries to sell them before tomorrow, but Sony may be searching EBay auctions for awhile after that.

He could have walked into the store, asked the clerks a few questions about various games, looked at their used game selection and then made off with the loot. Customer of the Gamestop, not a customer in general.

:lol

If this guy is stupid enough to try to eBay these PSPs he deserves to get caught. eBay routinely works not only with the copyright owners like Sony, but also local, state and federal law enforcement. Sayonara asshat.

He hasn't done it yet, buddy.

Yeah, and how the hell would eBay pinpoint this as the guy? There's plenty of people at this very forum who've acquired US PSPs by now. Merely selling one on eBay couldn't possibly pinpoint you as the thief. And since any auction started now wouldn't end until after launch, there's plenty of people with them preordered selling on ebay with the promise of shipping thursday/friday. In short, sayonara asshat? There is no possible way this guy could get burned by selling on ebay.

On the other hand, some gamestop manager is gonna get fired over not having the PSPs locked up. There have been warnings every day for the last week not to leave them just sitting in the back room.

oh man this is hilarious :lol

*the guy who stole the PSPs has to be careful not to get caught
*12 people are going to be, at least, inconvienced
*the GameStop employee(s) responsible for safeguarding the PSPs are gonna be, at least in trouble, if not fired
*ebay and or authorities will be on alert, somewhat
*other reprocussions that ive scarcely imagined.

everything you do in life has ripple effects, like tossing a pebble into a boby of water, the ripples go out everywhere,.

The word robber always reminds me of:

But he's a burglar. It's in his name.

Yeah, but robber always conjures up someone in a silly black and white striped outfit... like the guy from Kaboom.

Wouldn't that be funny.

"Rare, hard to find and hot off Gamestop's back room, buy now before they're all gone!!"

Something similar happened when i was working at Gamestop during the Dreamcast launch. We had so many units that we had to rent a space used by what used to be a Baby Gap. A couple of days after the launch, we were a dozen systems short (IIRC they came in a box with three boxes holding four each), as well as short on all the launch titles, and accessories. We all knew who it was, but no one could pin it on him.

Several months later, i'm playing Soul Calibur with a friend, and he talks about how the guy above hooked him up with some games. He tells me that the guy asked if he knew how to drive a stick, and he didn't but showed him how. He backed the guy's car into the rear exit of the area, and waited until the car was loaded.

In hindsight, i remembered being asked if i knew how to drive a stick, which i didn't. He probably knew i'd be a bad choice of an accomplice anyways since i would've have gone through with it.

What a shame. :(

Reminds me of the time some random guy off the street just walked into stock room of my local zellers and and tried to walk away with a 27" television, they didn't realize until after he left the store for a couple minutes.

They apprehended him though :lol
