What's with all the love for the Killers here? Does everyone else worship top 40 radio or something? I was amazed when that one song of theirs showed up in both RB and GH3. Especially since it's not really much of a guitar song.

I think they have fun/easy songs to play as a full band. Solo might not be that fun, except for the vocals...

I don't understand how it would. Why would something be able to manipulate me like that? I mean, if I'm listening to "Panama" then yeah, I wanna jump around and rock the fuck out, but I'm not going to listen to some Weezer where Rivers is being all emo and say that I feel for him and it really speaks to me. It certainly doesn't provoke a sympathetic response. When I hear "Folsom Prison Blues" I mainly just think that it's an interesting story with the sub-thought that Johnny Cash has never actually done hard time and I cannot believe he's badass enough to get away with playing for actual prisoners without getting 31 distinct varieties of shit beaten out of him for pretending he knows how it feels... no matter how sympathetic he's being.

I can acknowledge the mood of a song, but that has far more to do with the tempo than anything else.

Okay, so you do.

Not just a brain in a jar, then.

They make fun music.

So fucking what if they're played on top 40 stations? not everything has to be pretentious indie shit.

Cause I think their music is pretty alright.

That too.

It's not just music though. I don't find emotion in movies or books either. My emotions come exclusively from me and outside influences simply don't affect them. I find it bizarre how they could influence other people even though I realize this is often the case.

I'm detached. I don't care how the singer feels. Why would I? It's just a song to me.
Must be incredible to exist with no empathy. I mean, the world would be so...grey. For art not to be able to convey any emotion...wow, it's hard to imagine, but it seems like art would be near useless. Just wondering if that's the case?
I'm not trying to be sarcastic here, in fact, I'm taking what you say as pure truth, and it just blows my mind. I mean, to be inable to appreciate art outside of a cold analysis of technique, or to not be affected by the people around you, by their losses and successes...I don't think I could live like that.

2 schools of thought I tend to see with these games a lot. 1: everything released must be really obscure, and 2: everything released must be impossible to play metal songs.

I just like the songs that are fun.

I wouldn't call that "emotional" per se. It's merely uptempo. Lots of things cause a greater reaction in me. For example, hearing the mail come in through the slot.

I think the topics here are pretty free of that thankfully. :)

I tried typing something like this out, but it was pretty rude so I just deleted it :lol

Thank you.

I tend to prefer modern art personally. Before that I can appreciate the skill and such, but... well you made a picture that generally just looks like something. Even if you apply your own impressionistic viewpoint onto it I'm just... I'm not really digging it that much. I want something a little different from my art. I do, however, like pretty much every artistic medium I can think of. I enjoy things, but I don't see what emotion has to do with any of it.

For example, is Fight Club a good film because it generates an emotional response or because it's an interesting story told well with a wonderful visual style? Where does emotion fit into the latter? How would it supposedly improve it? I'm supposed to care how fictional people feel enough to have it affect how I feel? It's all fake! Clever, interesting, and thought-provoking, but still fake.

I'm not an emotionless person. I mean, as you've probably seen here I'm basically stuck between hyperbolic love and bottomless hatred. Almost all of my opinions are very, very strongly held and I can't really think of much that I don't have some sort of opinion on.

If you classify humor as an emotion however you've probably got me there. But it's again something I wouldn't even begin to describe as emotional and definitely not empathetic.

Feel free to PM me whatever you want no matter how rude it is. Despite getting so worked up by so many things I'm usually pretty easy-going about personal matters. The worst I'm likely to do is just tell you to fuck off and I don't typically hold grudges.

I can take a lot of shit. Just not shitty taste in movies or music :D

I certainly wouldn't agree with either of those and fun is definitely one of my top considerations. As I've said before one of my favorite songs in GH3 was "Talk Dirty To Me". Yeah, it's easy and by a largely terrible band. It was popular as hell and not particularly good either, but it's fun as fuck. I'm finding that "I Fought The Law" is one of my top tracks from Rock Band.

My big enemy is usually just mediocre pop in all it's forms.

I can't see how you can 'love' music without it evoking an emotional response, without responding to it on an emotional level seems to defeat the entire purpose of it in the first place.

So "Girlfriend" evokes a deep emotional response for you? You really identify with her desire to steal some guy away from the girl he's currently dating because she thinks he's cute and she's jealous?

I thought you'd always just said it was a fun song.

Maybe if you define "hey, that's cute and fun and I enjoy it" as an emotional response. I can see how someone might do that, I certainly wouldn't, but I can understand it.

Well played sir, but again, lyrics are one thing, the music is another. I won't try and defend the Girlfriend thing, it's just a fun song that I think would translate well in to the game and a bit of a guilty pleasure at that.

Wait. Are you guys all psychoanalyzing Belgand because he hates boring bands?

Nah, I just said, in response to Dave talking about how he used to get all emo listening to Pinkerton, that music doesn't give me an emotional response. Apparently it's not possible to enjoy something if it doesn't make you empathize.

Thanks. I'm just trying to say that that's the same way I feel. I don't connect with it, I just enjoy things for being fun or otherwise enjoyable.

A wicked guitar solo doesn't make me fall to my knees as my soul weeps over it's heart-rending beauty driving me to feel overwhelming love for my fellow man and really get how the guitarist feels... it's just totally bitchin' (technical term).

Ten-Song said:
You should never defend that song at all, because it's a terrible song. The only emotional response you should get from it is shame.

:lol

QFT. I literally lol'ed.

Wait. Matthew Sweet "Girlfriend?" It's an awesome song!

Why the hell can't people learn to use the effects switch properly?

Now, for the record, I love the effects switch. I think it's an awesome way to put a personal touch on the songs, and find that I use my star power more as an effect trigger than anything else. But the problem with it is that learns how to use it. Noone tries to understand which effect sound right for each moment. It's like the whammy bar all over again. Now, instead of having morons bend every held note to hell and back, we get to hear that off-key trainwreck with flange.

Just wish that people would learn what the effects do, learn when to use them (no, not 'never') and learn that effects (and the whammy bar) can be used with style and finesse.

When will we get the official word about these 20 extra songs ?

edit : by the way I'm a little sad for HMX : they couldn't deliver what they advertised in their first RB mail.

The big problem with the whammy bar is that you get extra star power while using it. So people use it all the time, at ridiculously inopportune times.

The big problem with the effects is that you're distoring a guitar sound that is generally VERY FAMILIAR. Anything other than clean sounds like a trainwreck if you know the song at all.

I'VE GOT SOUL BUT I'M NOT A SOLDIER. How could you not love these guys?! "One of the best albums of the last twenty years!" Brandon Flowers was so right!

Honestly, I'm pretty much beyond hating on stuff just because it's popular or mainstream. The Killers are just fucking terrible.

woah, with the delay of Moving Pictures and DLC released today, I totally forgot about the friday announcement.

Of course I have to hope for The Colour and The Shape every week until it is released. But beside that I would like to see two songs of Modest Mouse. Paper Thin Walls, Ocean Breathes Salty or Dashboard pls :)

Hey guys, this might not be the right place for this and it may be a few weeks off, but what is everyone doing about plastic instruments for this round of music games? I would imagine many of you are going to get GH:WT as well as RB2, especially considering that everything will be compatible with both games.

Maybe this type of topic deserves it's own thread, something like "Decision '08: The Plastic Instrument Debate". I don't know, I'm just really undecided at this point and would like to have some discussion about this before RB2 gets here and I end up compulsively buying the whole bundle. Thoughts?

Apples has posted his weekly DLC riddle pic. He explicitly stated there are no red herrings this time, but that the logic may be slightly (read: extremely) wacky.

I'm thinking at the very least we'll get the new Metallica single.

Reasoning:

Battery (obvious)
Ice (Trapped under Ice) (could also involve the girl underneath being trapped?)
Barry Bonds (Pirates = piracy = Napster)
United Airlines (pledge of allegiance = ...And Justice for All)
Wolf (Of Wolf and Man)
Peanuts (Metallica has been known to play The Peanuts theme live)

Purely speculation at this point, but that's all I've got.

Hey guys, this might not be the right place for this and it may be a few weeks off, but what is everyone doing about plastic instruments for this round of music games?
I'm perfectly happy with my Les Paul, and with the new Strat still not having a clicky strumbar, it's going to stay that way.

I've got the new drums on pre-order and will be picking those up on the 14th. I'll be grabbing the cymbal expansion when that's released as well, and will have two "true" bass pedals by the 14th as well (crosses fingers).

Yesterday I was listening to my ipod and had an idea of a song pack

Bond Pack 01
"You know my Name" - Chris Cornell

"The World is not Enough" - Garbage

"Live and Let Die" - Paul McCartney

"A View to a Kill" - Duran Duran

and maybe the new one by Jack White to coincide with Quantum of Solace releasing.

I'm getting the ION kit (w/ cymbal and extra drum kick expansion), so I'll be either trading in my RB1 kit or giving it to my sister and bro in law, after I do the music transfer from RB1.

The guitars I'll be upgrading as well, gonna get the new guitar and the double-strum bass, and I'll probably upgrade my USB Mic to the one with the controller built in, because that would come in handy quite a bit.

I'm doing a full upgrade :D
