I've seen you post this many times. Could you tell me exactly how this will hurt PS4 matchmaking. I want a good example.
Well, let's ignore the wonkiness with the recent PS4 matchmaking. Corey addressed that, and I'm sure it will get stabilized.
That said, this is how the PC-XB1 crossplay will hurt PS4 matchmaking (with PC):
1. PC user goes into a playlist with crossplay on. The matchmaking system decides how to populate that match but must decide between XB1 and PS4 players to help fill it.
2. PS4 player goes into same playlist at the same time. Has similar skill rating to PC user above. Would normally be matched with him. But if the system decides to populate that match with an XB1 player first, the PS4 player has to wait for the system to match him into another match.
It is essentially cutting the available PC pool for matchmaking roughly in half, depending on skill rating matches and number of available players. This also affects XB1 players. However, the PC-XB1 matchmaking pool, even with half the PC users at any given time, should still be better than just matchmaking within their own pool.
Of course, if any PS4 users already had crossplay disabled, they won't see any adverse effects. In fact, if PS4 players decide to disable crossplay, it might actually speed up their matchmaking, though the match-ups might not be as balanced because it's coming from a smaller pool.
This was my point about the less accurate matchmaking. If a PS4 player has to disable crossplay to speed up matchmaking, it will hurt the accuracy of the match-ups. If the system has to spend longer to match the PS4 player, it will again hurt the match-ups. And people are already not happy with the sometimes imbalanced match-ups they get now.
The good thing is that there are enough PS4 players that the extra delay may seem imperceptible at times. But it will depend on the skill level and number of available players at that skill level. I imagine high level matches will still get mostly PC-PS4 matches. And lower level matches would probably have enough people to split the matchmaking into PC-XB1 and PC-PS4 matches where needed. However, on the mid to high end, such as Challenger to Star, I think you'll see more delays. There are likely not as many XB1 players in those ranks, but enough to gum up the matchmaking decisions between PC-XB1 and PC-PS4 matches.
I'm Challenger II and III in the Standard playlists on PS4. More often than not, I get matched with other PS4 players. It takes quite some time already to get a match, and has been like that for weeks. I could imagine this will make those wait times even longer with the system deciding where to place PC players (either in XB1 or PS4 matches).
Hopefully, Psyonix can optimize this, and any delays will be imperceptible. I'm confident they will improve it since the matchmaking is the bread and butter of this game. That said, the best way to resolve this is to enable all three platforms to matchmake together. That may be a tall policy order, but it really is in the interest of everyone. So I'm sure it will get done. The question is when.
Edit: I would be remiss if I didn't point out that this has the potential to introduce matchmaking delays for crossplaying PC users as well. The upshot for them of course is they get another pool to matchmake from. So I imagine it would end up a net positive for them.
