My man Topher Topher already out here doing returns.

I mean this should have been fairly obvious from the start. This is an ASUS handheld PC with Xbox skin of dubious benefit.

You still have ASUS firmware updates, AMD updates, Armoury Crate updates and Windows updates.

And MS can't help itself and reinstalls stuff like M365 adverts and Teams, lol.

Personally, I like messing around with handhelds and have both Steam Deck OLED and ASUS Ally OG with Windows, but if you are purely a console gamer and go for Xbox Ally it's going to be a PC experience.

This is why I find it funny that the hardcore Xbox fans are pushing this narrative. It's just not a console and trying to squeeze it into that category is damaging when it comes to mass console gamer appeal. Then again, I am sure many of those Xbox fans will adapt even if they hate doing it.

The problem is with the folks that don't really follow this stuff, but have firm ideas on what an Xbox is. To them, it is a console with all the ease that implies. I imagine plenty of folks are thinking that's what they are getting and are in for a shock.

Yep, and this is on MS for confusing folks as usual with their marketing.

The sad thing is that they could've turned it into a great smooth console-like experience. If they had let the Xbox OS team make this full screen experience instead of the Windows team. Or they could've just hired the Playnite folks to make a UI or just have Playnite preinstalled like how Steam is and sit there ready to just start and setup.

But they didn't, they rushed the Xbox App, was vague in the PR, and now it's out and people are seeing it clearly that it's just not good enough from a console perspective.

And it's exhausting to see where people are openly stretching the truth. There is so much exaggerations online, and FUD, posted by console warriors, on all sides. I don't understand it. It's really not helping anyone. Be real, talk about your real experience, and maybe the industry can actually improve.

So I'm reading, watching reviews and videos of owners and aside from the usual suspects Tom Gaggren on Jizz Curdled, lots seems to think it's more like a RAGE Angry X inducing rather than a ROG Ally due to the obnoxious and dumb bugs, compatibility and usability flaws not present on other OS/handhelds.

I love MS choosing violence and kicking fans in the balls time and again, and them going back for more till their balls are jam. 😎

You, you know who you are, DESERVE IT. 🫡

I am not understanding a lot of the hate on this thing. Most of the things I'm seeing linked just don't make sense. Like the guy trying to use the touchscreen to input a code on Battlefield. Most likely it's in a compatibility mode where the touchscreen is disabled and he simply has to push the A button to bring up a keyboard and you the controls to type. The update one also confuses me. After the initial long setup/install I haven't had anything like that happen.

And people saying the full screen mode isn't done well completely confuses me. Outside of initially toying around and purposely leaving full screen mode, it's been absolutely seamless. Sure, the UI isn't anywhere good as the Xbox, but it works well enough that I can do what I intend to without any issues.

And hard disagree with post saying this isn't for Xbox gamers who aren't into PC gaming. I haven't done PC gaming since the first StarCraft and I really like this thing. But I also had the expectation that it's not going to run everything. I'm currently loving Helldivers 2 on my Xbox, and I know it's not play anywhere. I'm fine with that. I'm also not going to buy it again on Steam just to have it portable. I'll stick with my compatible Xbox games, which is why I bought it.

Reminder: in the Xbox big screen mode, when selecting your game you want to install, if it's been optimized for handheld, it just installs. If not, it pops up where the issues might be. I'll give 2 examples.

This is what pops up when I selected Battlefield 2042. I quickly decided not to install it.

This is for the first Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster. I'm fine with this, so install away.

I get this thing likely won't sell that great, but the hate is unreasonable for what it is. It's a portable game machine that supports a large portion of the Xbox library that, as a bonus, allows you to play games from other storefronts. That's it.

I mean.. yeah there might be a bug here and there. but just use a Bluetooth or a wired keyboard man. you didn't have to make a video pretending the guy is angry because he cant type in a pop up box. that's lame lol.

if you can't think outside the box or solutions for 2 seconds, then PC gaming in general is not for you.

The "hate" for Windows handhelds predates this device. Literally none of the complaints you are reading are new. The reasons console gamers do not like PC gaming are also not new. This solves nothing in that regard so I'm seriously doubting most Xbox gamers that buy this are going to love it.

If you are fine with all the issues with then that is perfectly fine obviously, but this was supposed to be the handheld that fixed Windows for handhelds and it just doesn't do that. The criticism is legit, imo, especially with all the Xbox marketing behind it.

Exactly, you'd be better off with a console, like an Xbox, which this clearly isn't.

It is a portable device my man. If you gotta carry around a keyboard then what's the point? Just buy a laptop

I take it he's never bought a new console. You're still doing massive updates and log ins when you first start it up that takes about the same amount of time.

Then he's creating his own problems to bitch about. If you're buying this for gaming, there's literally no reason to go to the windows desktop. When you do go there, a prompt pop ups saying that the desktop is designed for mouse and keyboard. It literally tells you that and he complains it's bad using your thumbs.

And then he talks about going to settings and misclicking into chrome. Well, the misclicking might have to do with the fact it's designed for a mouse, which it told you. And it seems you already started adding apps, as Chrome doesn't came installed on this. Almost his entire video he is in desktop mode, which you really don't need to be in. After seeing this, I jumped on the desktop, opened the Microsoft Store, did check for updates, and updated all the preinstalled apps in under 15 seconds with no misclicking. For a tech guy he sounds like a complete fucking idiot who just trying to defend Steam Deck when nobody is attacking it.

I touched up on this earlier. It's likely the game/app he's using doesn't recognize the touch screen and is waiting for him to hit the A button to bring up the keyboard. I've had that happen in an Xbox game (as the Xbox doesn't recognize touchscreens) and it popped right up.

I mean... the keyboard is in the video he posted. a gaming keyboard from the RGBs of it too even lol.

You are right about buying a laptop though. a much better option than these overpriced weak ass devices.

Black Friday is coming. You will probably get a laptop that 3x the performance, probably for the same price.

Consoles do not take over an hour to setup, stop lying.

I'd probably categorize setup of a device a little differently, but I've been stopped dead in my tracks when trying to play a game on Deck plenty of times. As much as I like the device (enough so that I upgraded to the OLED model), it can feel like a cumbersome experience and that's without adding Windows to the mix.

Negativity garners attention.

Setting up consoles are not comparable to setting up Windows. Not even close. I'm a PC guy through and through and consoles take a matter of minutes while a new PC takes an hour considering you have to go through the dozen or so prompts that you go through for every vanilla PC where Microsoft wants you to sign up for shit like 365 and such. Nothing was streamlined here for a gaming device whatsoever.

That screenshot clearly says "or touch" so why are you saying it only says mouse and keyboard? But yes, you can do everything you need to do from the Xbox app......so long as you never use anything else but the Xbox app. Vast majority of gamers are going to want to use Steam. That's going to require using the desktop. As will debloating Windows.

When I use any handheld in desktop mode, even Steam, I often misclick. The screen it just too small for accuracy.

Calling this guy an idiot simply because you don't like that he is criticizing the handheld is a bit absurd. Again, these are the same problems people have complained about for a few years now with windows handhelds. Are they all idiots?

I never said it was only mouse and keyboard. I said it was designed for it. I've been through the desktop mode and did updates using touch without problems, but bitching about misclicking when using an alternate control method instead of the one it's designed for is absurd. It's like complaining that Mario Bros. is too hard when using a Guitar Hero controller.

By the way, you don't have to go to desktop for Steam. It's clickable through the Xbox app.

What a shit show. If this is where handheld gaming is going, Nintendo will continue to dominate that arena because they know what handheld gamers like--this hoop-jumping isn't it. All this code authentication crap, launcher bullshit, un-optimized nonsense, over complicated fuckery etc. is for the birds, I mean nerds.

Oh is Steam preinstalled? That's good then. I'll agree to disagree on the desktop mode issues.

The main issue with this handheld is the marketing. It straight up doesn't play all Xbox games, and there are a lot that have major flaws if you do try, like I showed with Battlefield 2042.

They really should have marketed with how many games are optimized for it and showed them off, like Gears of War Reloaded.

My primary interest in the device is the Auto SR. An A.I upscaler that works with any game and has no GPU computational cost. Having access to that puts this device well over any of its peers. There is nothing they can offer that tops it. Auto SR in its current form is already good on those Qualcom laptops and will be even better when v2 arrives on this device.

They (MS) should have made their own legit, non-pc handheld if they cared about their user base, the one that played on console because they wanted to avoid the PC shit show.

Fuck all these PC handhelds, even the beloved Steam Deck, because console/true handhelds gamers will never go over to the dark side (PC).

It is interesting and I am looking forward to it in the future but why did the barrel change colors? Also, why the hit on fps at 1080p and 1440p but a gain on 2160p? I'm a bit dense when it comes to upscalers.

There is no GPU hit as Rich states in the video. He attributes the variance to the benchmark test.

In that same thread, he complains that Microsoft should have had the handhelds emulate their console games.

How does someone who calls himself a tech journalist expect a 25W z2 Extreme chipset to emulate Series S games?

Eh....I'd say his other points are valid even if he is off there. Wouldn't require emulation either way since it is all DirectX and using AMD underneath.

Steam and all the big gaming stores don't need desktop mode, it's installable and then goes to big picture mode when opened, and then you just install what you want and go back to FSE

This is FSE on Steam Deck, sorry for the quick and dirty video. It amazes how so many here jump around on FUD, then dismiss other stuff when it doesn't fit the fucking anti Xbox narrative here.

Anti xbox narrative? I already acknowledged being corrected on the Steam in this. Not sure what you are talking about here.

Not you sorry if it came across that way.

But some of the bullshit videos posted in this very thread are only here to fit a narrative. Those posters wouldn't post a glowing review would they 🧠
