ROG Xbox Ally X - Reviews Thread

Would be nice if it actually played my Xbox catalog.
I'm actually surprised how much I have on FSE to play. Though I have some purchased Steam games and lots of free Epic games too. I have GP Ultimate so have the Ubisoft+ and EA Play backlog straight away, as well as lots of play anywhere games, over 100 cloud games included. Some of my purchases also Cloud Playable and then the whole PC game pass.

The word Xbox is confusing people still I get that though, MS marketing is awful, and has been awful for years. They should clear house before next year with all these brain-dead execs in charge

For anyone that used both, the ROG Ally and the ROG Xbox Ally, is the Xbox Ally experience worse? Or is it just expectations that it would be better? I am trying to get my expectations in check for the future.

This is FSE on Steam Deck, sorry for the quick and dirty video. It amazes how so many here jump around on FUD, then dismiss other stuff when it doesn't fit the fucking anti Xbox narrative here.
...how can it be anti-Xbox if we are talking about handheld PCs?

Please don't be disingenuous, if this was just the new Rog Ally X 2 the narrative around it would be different. All the confusion as well as hate/FUD is because it's labelled XBOX, PC or not.

Some of the confusion is deffo on Microsoft and some of the bullshit is for clicks/pushing agenda's.

I'll bow out of this thread now though before I get 10 laughing emojis.

In that same thread, he complains that Microsoft should have had the handhelds emulate their console games.

How does someone who calls himself a tech journalist expect a 25W z2 Extreme chipset to emulate Series S games?
This has been brought up in regards to backwards compatibility on home consoles. Legally, they can't emulate without getting a new license for each game. The license they had allowed them to sell the game on a specific platform. The workaround is complicated having to do with older components in new hardware. That's why PS4 didn't do backwards compatibility. The system could only do so with an emulator so each game needed a new license.

This is where PC games excel, because a game sold for PC 40 years ago can be emulated without legal issue (outside of expired license) as the game was originally sold on PC and is still being played on PC.

It works both ways though. Would there be pushback on the criticism if it didn't have Xbox in the name? Like I said above, these criticisms are not new as they have applied to windows handhelds for a while. Throw in the "xbox" name on the box and all we are really doing is adding more voices, on both sides, to an ongoing debate.

You even say some of it is "...deffo on Microsoft..." So yes, if this was just another ROG Ally X-2 with the exact same OS as before, things expectations would be different. 🤷‍♂️

The "hate" for Windows handhelds predates this device. Literally none of the complaints you are reading are new. The reasons console gamers do not like PC gaming are also not new. This solves nothing in that regard so I'm seriously doubting most Xbox gamers that buy this are going to love it.

If you are fine with all the issues with then that is perfectly fine obviously, but this was supposed to be the handheld that fixed Windows for handhelds and it just doesn't do that. The criticism is legit, imo, especially with all the Xbox marketing behind it.
Well said.

Part of the issue stems from the marketing specifically from Xbox. If this was simply the 2nd gen ROG Ally aimed purely at PC gamers it would be different.

Windows is pure shit on a handheld and while this helps it doesn't fix it at all.

Also it's $1000 and most people simply do not see the value. The $600 model is essentially a Steam Deck that sometimes performs worse and costs $200 more to do so.

There is definitely a contingent of people who hate on it because it has the name attached but I think it's a small minority.

Plus a lot of the Xbox specific criticism is valid as well IMO. It's not like Xbox does nothing to attract criticism.

In fact, many of us are arguing against this even being called an Xbox. That's not hating Xbox. That's hating the marketing around this whole thing. It is very telling to me that when Sarah Bond was asked about the expensive price point of this "Xbox", she pointed the finger directly at Asus and says it is their hardware, not Microsoft's.

None of that is to say this is a bad product.....as a windows handheld. It just isn't an Xbox.

The only reason I was keeping an eye on this hardware was the OS optimization, with the hope of a future desktop release. It's a shame MS delivered something so half-baked in that regard. At this rate, I think it's easier to wait for Valve to release SteamOS for all desktops and address issues like anti-cheat and Nvidia drivers.

This. At first I had no idea what this thing was, but once I learned what it can and can't do, I noped out.

I can't imagine not being able to play a big part of your library.
It's such a weird decision, really. I don't know how informed people are who buy this new xbox, but I wouldn't know that it can't play xbox games without DF talking about it in their weekly shows. I'm pretty sure I would have returned this thing after realizing that I can't play my over 100 "owned" games with this thing.

I have no interest in these anymore. If local streaming gets better, and a new PS Portal can be hacked to stream from PC, I'll be going down that road.

Microsoft has cleverly tried to blur the lines between Xbox console and Xbox PC games, trying to break down the walls and make them one in the same. To me, they are guilty of false advertising and purpose murky messaging. 360 emulation is the same shit. Good luck with the licensing ball of yarn.

Misleading customers is never a good idea. It's okay, Microsoft thinks sending out Sarah Bond helps, for reasons.

There isn't even any clever disclaimers anywhere, "like plays 75% of titles, might include cloud streams or third-party PC versions."

I wonder if ASUS had to pay Microsoft a license fee for the XBOX branding, or did ASUS make Microsoft pay for it.

The tech is nice no doubt. It's expensive. The messaging is dubious at best.

Wow that is some patience. I would've packed it up and tophereturned that shit.
This seems like peak portable windows shenanigans.

All he had to do is plug in a physical mouse and keyboard in some dongle.

Don't want to do shit like this?
Get a switch 2 or steam deck.

Windows can be amazing and so fucking ass at the same time.

I just want my shit to always work the older i get and i lack time to figure out issues.
Don't get a thing like this if you don't want to put in the effort

I find it nuts how an expensive device from a large brand like ASUS can't even make decent buttons and dpad. really no excuse. Especially when you have cheap Chinese toys like the £30 Miyoo Mini+, or Ambernic shit that have incredible dpad and buttons.

If any handheld has shit buttons, it's a deal-breaker for me. All the good they otherwise do is completely void due to this. It's an integral part of the device. You have to get it right, more so than other areas.

How is the Legion Go S? Considering getting one and doing a Windows Exorcism for SteamOS.

Really good. I have the Z2 Go as that's all I need for what I use handhelds for. Got it on sale for $500. You'll probably want the Z1 Extreme for anything demanding. The selling point for me was the 8" screen. Very nice. Perfect size.

This is spot on! The screen is amazing on the Legion Go S.

I have the Z1E version with SteamOS for the extra performance and wow does it deliver. There's a Windows version, too, if you want more flexibility.

Wait for a sale at this point. They'll go down around Black Friday for sure.

I got mine a few months ago for around $750 ($899 MSRP).

I have Windows version (white one). Got it because it has 32GB vs 16GB and 1 TB SSD. With all the price hikes, $500 was highway robbery. I just upgraded it to 2TB for dual booting Windows and Steam OS.

You got an amazing deal on that!

Oh man, I have a 2TB SSD in my Steam Deck OLED. I should swap that to this and also do a dual boot.

Looks like I have a project over the holidays 🙂

how would it have been any better on the Deck?

Aside from the fact that Battlefield 6 doesn't work on SteamOS, touch targets in the desktop mode of SteamOS aren't any bigger or better than on Windows desktop.

doesn't even come close to address what I posted, but OK.

When I owned a Deck, I certainly had to hang out in Desktop mode quite a bit, between installing the files I needed to have other Stores show up in game mode and then the whole experimental Proton stuff. Same for EmuDeck and some other plugins.

So just like every other PC device before it...I don't understand his praise for the same shit we've already had for years

This one has the console focused review sites like IGN giving it a 9 and calling it the best handheld for the foreseeable future while PC oriented sites know there's 2 better handhelds already.

I'm sure people are rushing to take advice from him/her/they/that.

Which 2 better handhelds?

I'd pick the MSI 8 AI+ and Lenovo Legion Go S (Z1E) over this and not think twice, primarily due to the superior screens. If you want top of the line performance then GPD 5 is the answer. Best value for the price? MSI. Best screen. Lenovo Legion Go 2. Honestly, I'd probably opt for the Rog Ally X over the "xbox" branded version. But if someone wants the latest, greatest from Asus then Xbox Ally X is the one.

Doesn't the MSI 8 AI+ have driver issues because of the Intel chip?

Or does it get fixed via Bazzite?

Calling out Sony games as if being able to play them is some huge thing is bizarre. They are no more special than any other game you can play and butt old at this point.

She is the one who couldn't figure out how to change the resolution in Legion Go 2 to do comparative benchmarks with Xbox rog ally at 1080p
