Roman Polanski: 'US persecuted me when they tried to extradite me'

Denial? Or perhaps they think it wasn't as bad as how the media said it was?

Probably that and I wouldn't be surprised if there was a perverse cultural underbelly in hollywood where morals are constantly degraded to the point where a lot of things are accepted or treated as not a big deal, at least in the sexual realm..

guess you hasn't met his defend force yet. God I remember one thread where they attempted to paint him as victim and blame the US as bully for continuing going after him.
His trial was kind of botched by a showboat judge who was sentencing him based on the whims of the media circus. Even the attorney for the prosecution said the whole thing had become unfair and he understood why Polanski fled.

But he should have done time regardless. And the US is right to continue their demand for justice.

The timing of this rape-related article couldn't have been more appropriate for GAF, being published not long after the revenge of Dickwolves assured a shitstorm over rape here.

I'm so dissapoitned when I see good actors work with this little fuck.

Ewan McGregor, Johnny Depp, that fuck dudes ?

Seriously. How do you get on set with this guy, look him in his cold dead eyes, shake the same hands that raped a child, and not feel nauseated about what you're doing?

It always makes me laugh how much support he had from the movie industry. Like, present this exact case but swap Polanski's name for any old fucking guy and they'd feel sick. But because he made a movie as good as Chinatown its okay.

Winning the Oscar for the Pianist was a fucking despicable act that happened because of a fucking despicable industry. Guy's a cunt, interviewer should have smacked him in the fucking mouth.

The guy is seen as a tortured artist. They more than likely see it as working with the man who made films like Chinatown who's being harassed unfairly. Rather than the scumbag who's been on the lam for 30 years after raping a 13 year old girl, oh yeah he made films like Chinatown.

I honestly think there's something disarming about it to artsy fartsy types. It's all well and good to be against child rape in the abstract, but when it's "just" a sensetive French artist who just happens to like extremely young women, it feels more familiar, more excusable... Maybe even dare I say erotically appealing to some of them. It's a little like the Hollywood version of women who send love letters to murderers in prison.

Polanski served 42 days of psychiatric evaluation in prison as part of a plea deal in 1978, but fled for his native France after learning the judge was likely to sentence him to a further lengthy prison spell.

This continues to blow my mind. Did he think he'd just get a laugh out of everybody and continue on with his life?

I'm not gonna necessarily blame the people in his films, but the list of people who are supporting what he did publicly really depressed me.

That list always hurts seeing some of my favorites. Mann, Scorsese... :(

And you read the petition and you just think what the fuck are they even thinking?

We have learned the astonishing news of Roman Polanski's arrest by the Swiss police on September 26th, upon arrival in Zurich (Switzerland) while on his way to a film festival where he was due to receive an award for his career in filmmaking.

His arrest follows an American arrest warrant dating from 1978 against the filmmaker, in a case of morals.

Filmmakers in France, in Europe, in the United States and around the world are dismayed by this decision. It seems inadmissible to them that an international cultural event, paying homage to one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers, is used by the police to apprehend him.

By their extraterritorial nature, film festivals the world over have always permitted works to be shown and for filmmakers to present them freely and safely, even when certain States opposed this.

The arrest of Roman Polanski in a neutral country, where he assumed he could travel without hindrance, undermines this tradition: it opens the way for actions of which no one can know the effects.

Roman Polanski is a French citizen, a renown and international artist now facing extradition. This extradition, if it takes place, will be heavy in consequences and will take away his freedom.

Filmmakers, actors, producers and technicians -- everyone involved in international filmmaking -- want him to know that he has their support and friendship.

On September 16th, 2009, Mr. Charles Rivkin, the US Ambassador to France, received French artists and intellectuals at the embassy. He presented to them the new Minister Counselor for Public Affairs at the embassy, Ms Judith Baroody. In perfect French she lauded the Franco-American friendship and recommended the development of cultural relations between our two countries.

If only in the name of this friendship between our two countries, we demand the immediate release of Roman Polanski.

That bolded section. I know its relatively old news now being four years old, but I just can't get my head around the fact that so many people think he should be free purely because he's one of them, a film maker. I can't think of any other reason.

The same way we wear shoes made with child labor and buy diamonds drenched in blood as gifts.

On another note, his vocabulary seems off. It isn't persecution, the US government pursuing criminals (for crimes committed in the US) is justice.

I guess I expected Europeans like Almodovar and older directors like David Lynch to get mixed up in crazy causes whereas Wes Anderson and Darren Aronofsky are particularly disappointing to me, I'd have guessed they were too intelligent for that...

Yup. I was as surprised as you to see them endorsing child rape.

The amount of people that signed that petition makes me wonder how many of them know the particulars of the case, outside of the general stuff and what was covered in the deceptive documentary that TWC put out a few years back. I have a hard time believing, at least, that a lot of those people would have signed it if they had just read Samantha Geimer's deposition, where she describes everything that Polanski did to her.

It's funny how if any other child rapist were ugly and untalented, these celebs would probably join the "fuck you rapist" crowd.

They are pretty much all crazy rich with PR reps, they will be well aware of it.

Any other industry.

Imagine if a bunch of dock workers made a petition to help a colleague who fled the country after raping a teenage girl, or chefs. There'd be indignation around the world, probably from actors and directors as well.

Fucking cunts, the lot of them.
