Rooster Teeth berate Jeff Gerstmann/Giant Bomb's Fallout 4 review while...

Man, especially that second paragraph really rubs me the wrong way. How the hell is her point "very salient"? Yeah, I'm sure journalists are really craving all the negative attention from fanboys like themselves and all the hatemail that comes with it.

And yes, I'm pretty sure we are a better judge, when your uninformed ass has never even heard of Jeff Gerstmann. But somehow that didn't stop you from questioning his integrity.

Another website to add to my shitlist.

It's borderline delusion, her point wasn't salient AT ALL. Context is king and she presented the point in an annoyed, defensive manner as if she was personally affronted by a critic having the audacity to review lower than the average. Her tone, her words suggest a personal bias that just isn't seeking to have some kind of larger conversation about the topic. She just didn't like the fact that her favourite game of the moment took a hit from somebody. They didn't just disagree with his review they sought to dismiss it outright. The entire tone of that conversation was one of passive aggressive frustration. That whole "we tend to approach our reviews from a purely personal gamer-experience level" is such nonsense. What does that even mean, anyway?

I hadn't read the response before now, but earlier I made a point that you can either back down and realise that you're caught up in the hype cycle or you can double down. I guess they decided to double down. Oh, and still slighting Jeff by letting the possibility that he chose to score the game for hits linger is another classy move. You''re right though, I'll be the judge of that, and the fact that he gave the PC version four stars and the console version three stars makes this conversation even more ludicrous. THAT'S SOMEHOW CONSIDERED "LOW". Good Lord! I would hope Jeff declines their offer, there's no need to indulge this line of thinking.

That's the thing, though: if this conversation had been born from ignorance it would have been much easier to excuse. Her remarks were clearly motivated by the fact that Bethesda is paying the bills.

I'm not so cynical as to think that's the reason why. More that they have a relationship with a game that starts at a reveal and is peppered throughout its life with snippets of coverage and marketing gloss that, by the time the game comes out, you've committed to this relationship fully. The hype cycle is almost intoxicating and once you get caught up in it, you do not want any dissenting voices telling you that you're wrong. It's hard not to get lost amidst the plethora of cool PR gadgets and goodies. Which seem to adjourn Rooster Teeth's desk. I think her remarks are motivated by her favourite game being slighted. Like I've already said, gamers now act more like sports fans than anything else and looking at those usenet posts, it's always been this way. They just have YouTube channels now.

Fallout 4 is the least polished console game available on PS4 and Xbox One. There is no other game on these platforms with frame-rate issues this severe. This is THE SINGLE WORST PERFORMING GAME on these platforms. How can you ignore that?

I don't think that is true. There are a lot of areas where the game holds a relatively solid 30fps on consoles; someone could literally play for hours at 30fps. Sure there are areas with really bad performance, but the game is not a consistently bad performer, rather it is an inconsistent performer.

Fallout merchandise or not, I've always found Rooster Teeth speak from the heart and I can't say the same about Giant Bomb. 'Wine and cheese' might be a bit much but I think the general gist of what she said is spot on about them.

How can you say the speak from the heart when they are literally paid by publishers to talk about their games? You can't expect honest opinions from someone who is basically paid to advertise something. I love watching Rooster Teeth's Minecraft series but I avoid everything else they do because of this reason.

This has got to be one of the most juvenile displays I've seen in a long time. With these people being a part of the media/press, how can they throw another reviewer under the bus? They essentially becoming part of the fanboy mob mentality, it just baffles me to no end.
You don't have to agree with Gerstmann but for godsakes, acting like spoilt children about it is not the way to go.
Even if it was not someone as prominent as Jeff, implying that reviews that stray from the norm do it for attention makes you no better then the marks found on developer/punlisher forums. Integrity is key and the whole situation makes it appear that there is a bias. I'm not going so far to say they are being paid or are in Bethesda's pocket but you don't help the perception when you act in the benefit of the company rather than the audience. You can like the game, but don't run around bashing those who have complaints.

Came into this thread not even knowing Rooster Teeth was still a thing. Thought they died off after RVB finished.

Then I googled Meg Turney, who's name has popped up a lot in this thread.

Google pointed me to her playboy shoots.

Oh my.

I don't understand Rooster Teeth. I don't get them. I don't watch them. I really hate Red vs. Blue since even when I still liked Halo. But I know people who like them and swear by them. Whatever. Also I can't say bad things about them on Twitter because their artwork guy apparently follows me and I'd feel bad if I insulted him or something. I dunno.

I love GiantBomb though.

Looking forward to the inevitable wine and cheese mailbag.

hahahahah

seriously though people are entitled to their opinions and we should welcome views which don't necessarily conform to the zeitgeist. Belittling someones criticism just makes you look illformed and childish especially when you have nothing constructive to say yourself. I mean sitting there wearing pip-boys, come on now.

The thing that has irked me so much is the wine and cheese comment, that was a shot at someone who has a significant amount of knowledge and respect in the industry. If you're looking for someone who is honest and has integrity in this industry you can look no further than Jeff, look how he got sacked form gamespot for Christ sake.

I just don't get why they would go after Jeff. I mean, the guy a godfather in videogame journalism and critique, and an ethical standard. I only assume they saw it as an SEO-opportunity to mention and bag him for views and hits, and could only be done in jest. Really, this should have never been treated by RT like it was a serious comment from the get-go.

Internet is full of ignorance, Ryan knows it, and this thread proves it.

Embrace it fellow gaffers. Denying that being different can perfectly be, and often is, a way to catch attention, is proving you never bothered on knowing why the people think the way they think, and that you never try to consider all the possible point of views surrounding a event to reach the truth about it.

There's where ignorance comes from.

Yes, maybe that was a mistake from RT to make some of the comments they did, but still they talk is about the "being different" thing, and that's a total legit point.

Good lord, these idiots are still digging.

Going after Jeff, of all people, on a question of the integrity of his reviews? Going after Giant Bomb, of all places, as some high-brow "wine and cheese" establishment?

And the idea that Jeff would lower himself to actually appearing alongside these nobodies, or that he would give half a fuck about what they think of him or his reviews?

It's all off-the-charts levels of hubristic stupidity.

young buck trying to make a name for himself most likely. an inflated sense of self worth in the industry and an ego that is writing checks it can't cash. a perfect shit storm of stupid follows. makes sense really.

dude really thinks he has a point but the internet is doing him wrong

haha oh god

this whole thread is kinda embarrassing some people were dicks but the response is way ott (no one individual but you know internet mob outrage thing and now im joining in agh) i'm sure jeff is delighted that loads of people have justice boners and are on a crusade in his name yet again.

buuuuuut

this dude hasn't got a clue about damage control jesus christ, apologize and shut up (or just shut up). you all got caught up in the moment and said some dumb shit own it and move on.

No way, I love the game but the frame rate drops are plentiful. I refuse to believe there is anyone that hasn't had it happen, maybe they don't know what it is on a technical level but if there is someone in this world that has played fallout 4 to completion without any issues I would be astounded.

I mean, I've definitely seen some slowdown, but never once has it impacted the game in a negative way. It's more like, sure, I'd love for it to be steady, but it not being steady just isn't a big deal for me. It's certainly not something I'd penalize in the manner Gerstmann has, but that just means we have different expectations and standards.

What's crazy to me is a (theoretically) professional person calling out another professional's review like that.

Maybe the Best Of collections on YouTube are good, they're punchy, well-edited clips. Start from 1 and go from there.

Of course they don't get a lot of Jeff in pure rant mode which I personally believe is the most entertaining/informative thing he does occasionally, when something really, REALLY pisses him off.

The Best of Giantbomb account is pretty good on YouTube: https://youtu.be/0qEfONC419k?t=4m8s

Other than that, just listen to the podcast and watch the content they put out. The people that complain about him being a cynic don't realize that he's been doing this for a looooong time. Of course it's going to take a lot to impress him. That's the way it should be. In the end he always right which is why people get so upset. It's because deep down they know he has a point.

Best of GiantBomb is a good place to start. That and the GiantBombcast is pretty great. They have a premium membership which is worth the $5 a month just for their Mario Party Party videos which is beyond hilarious.

Best of Giant Bomb on youtube as excellent. Myggen also uploads a lot of great stuff on the podcasts/mixlrs that Jeff does. Jeff's Destiny Year 1 rant during GOTY was fucking legendary.

A great way to get caught up on the bombcast.

as mentioned before, Best of giantbomb is a good place to start, I'd also recommend Bitesize Bomb for some of their older videos : https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL0W9JEIihAvfpYqm1slqVCXXxLpRbaQUb

Lol thanks guys.

This is true for most modern people lately, even in more serious forms of media. People only follow people they agree with on every point in social media, they only read or watch from news outlets that align with their own outlook on life.

How can anyone find their sense of self living in an echo chamber?

Hey I like your post.
