Daisy is Luigi to Peach's Mario. She's not unique or interesting at all, and barely features in games.
Rosalina was the main NPC of the best 3d mario ever. She is a playable character in the new, brilliant 3D mario. Daisy did neither of those things. Rosalina is nothing like peach, and has her own backstory, and with Luma, a very unique potential fighting style. It's obvious why she'd be the choice.
EDIT: What bothers me is that my main roster prediction was a serious push towards female fighters, yet I didn't get either Wii Fit Trainer or Rosalina.
And I think you can rule out Waluigi, Daisy and Toad now.
Last game was in 2010.
The only thing I can figure is that you haven't played any game featuring Daisy except maybe Super Mario Land.
Daisy from the Strikers alone has more personality than Peach and Rosalina combined.
Yeah, it could have been an excuse to bring back the Mario Tornado, just rename it the Galaxy Spin or something and have little sparkles similar to Super Mario Galaxy when he does it.
I dislike FLUDD in Smash for that reason. I loved his original Down-Special.

I don't care that it's a female, but I do slightly care that it's the best Mario series female. While not a remotely high bar to climb, hey, solid.
Also that opening with Kirby was the Truth. Put mah boy in Mario Kart, lose money on Air Ride 2, etc.

She was a minor character at best in Galaxy.
And since then, Nintendo has really just been squeezing an appearance of her into all these games since then.
As if we were going to be absolutely thrilled to see her. She was merely an annoyance to my desire to keep platforming in SMG.

I like Mario Strikers, and I've played nearly every Mario game. What happens in those spin-off games has no bearing on how 'big' a character is. Those character get in those games to make up the numbers. If you're not in the mainline games, you're not visible to the main audience of the IP, and you're not a big character. Daisy is not a big character. Rosalina has become one.
It's an excellent choice.

To me she has more of a Captain Olimar style however with more control over Luma than he has with each individual Pikmin, not getting the Ice Climbers vibe. I dunno if we already saw Olimar before this however I saw him in the trailer which makes me happy, I want him back.
Rosalina is a good character however I think someone like Shulk would be an excellent "new age" character for this type of game.

Personally, I don't have anything against Rosalina, but this screams of pandering. Nintendo knows that the creepy Deviantartists will buy the Wii U in droves just to play as her. Just read some of the posts in this thread to get a better understanding. How the hell is she more deserving than the likes of Ridley, Little Mac, and King K. Rool?

The Super Mario Galaxy stage already represents those. The "amazing backstory" is extraneous bullshit that the fans obsess over because it makes the Mario series seem more emotional than it actually is. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was a far better game and Rosalina was barely featured at all. Like I said, I don't really mind having Rosalina as a playable character, but she should NOT take priority over other Nintendo characters.
