Just jumped on the hype train, I'll see it on Wednesday if I'm lucky. I'd like to know if I should expect to be surprised by the story, or stay with what I know from the trailers ?

Is there any difference between dolby3d and reald?

I've bought tickets for a dolby3d cinema on the 17th, but might watch it over christmax in reald if it's good.

Don't expect to be surprised is the general feeling from the reviews, but don't go reading into specifics either.

The story sounds stupid when written down. Then again, so did The Terminator's.

Yes, Dolby 3D is terrible. Real D is better, IMAX Digital is great and True IMAX is immense, with a picture a little less clear than Digital IMAX.

Lol.

I have to find my passport to watch it in imax, so that's a nono :lol

Why is it terrible?

A 3d question from me. The cinemas around here arew from the same chain, Cineplex. They say nothing about which kind of 3d they use on their webpage. A cinema index site labels the 3d screen simply as DLP 3D.

Is this good, bad or non-descript?

My cinema has RealD. It will be my first experience.

In other news, I can't believe there are people not looking forward to a Cameron action movie.

Non-descript. DLP just means digital projection.

If Dolby 3D is your only option, I would just go with that. For one, the Comic-Con presentation was in Dolby 3D and plenty of people were impressed by that, and there are some people out there who actually prefer Dolby's system to RealD. It's probably a good idea to make up your own mind.

Just email them and ask. That's what I´ve done with my two local cinemas.

I tried to read up on the difference. It seems like people think that Dolby3d is the best.
I dunno if it has changed since that though.

it's a simple story told well. really well. it's a journey - i was completely absorbed for the whole 2.5 (or so) hours.

Guys, I have a question.

The only 3D cinema in my country, it seems, is using this kind of a technology:
http://www.xpandcinema.com/products/

Is this stuff any good?

I asked before, but no one seems to know. I don't think anyone who posts here has seen a 3D movie in a cinema using Xpand. Sculli will shit on it, but he hasn't seen it himself so we can ignore his opinion on that. :)

Which one out of interest? I'm staying with my parents at the moment so I'm going to the Birmingham one but once I get back to London I'm going to see it at the BFI I think.

Glad I booked last month, just had a look and all the good seats are gone even with the last listed showing at the end of January.

That's pretty impressive. I know some employees, I think I can squeeze my way in. In case you're interested, they've been showing a beautiful print of Kane lately, I highly recommend it if it's close and you're a fan.

I'm OK with what I know. I hoped a bit more but if it's well told, I'll have a good time. Thanks !

Our local cinema is showing avatar. And only Avatar 3D, the entire day on Friday. No other movies listed, not even 2D ones. Is this normal?

How does dimming compare between 3d tech again?

My only problem with realD was noticeable dimming of the screen because of the glasses.

IMO Dolby 3D's glasses make the screen even darker. It really shouldn't matter to be honest, the movies are color corrected and adjusted for the that darkness, and so is the projection. In the case of RealD they even use a silver screen to counter effect the dimming. Yeah the movie looks "brighter" without the glasses on, but that's not really how it's supposed to look. :P

I mentioned this system on the thread a couple of days ago. I saw Up on a cinema fitted with the Xpand system, and while the 3D effect was pretty cool, it has a really serious drawback: the glasses are heavy as fuck. My girlfriend and me both wear glasses, and our noses were hurt at the end of Up, so imagine what kind of pain you must sustain over a 2 and a half hours plus movie. That system is dead, trust me.

The only thing in the film you won't be surprised by is the story. Expect everything else to blow your mind.

Well, when I went to see UP in realD it looked better less dim when I popped the glasses off ever so often.

There's some shenanigans going on with Avatar...the local RealD theater I went to last week to watch A Christmas Carol was only showing that movie 2 times a day, and it was the only 3D movie available.

Avatar 3D is being show EIGHT times a day next week. :P Apparently they also installed a new 3D screen just for this movie.

Also JOY, the movie will be shown subtitled in 3D in there. So yeah I'm ditching my plans to watch Avatar in 2D. You will not fight alone in this battle of TEH 3D, duckroll. :P

The story for Terminator is shit. Why send I terminator to kill connor, why not a whole army, better yet why not send back huge explosives back in time (you can cover bombs with human tissue). Why not kill conner when he is an infant or why not just kill his great great granparent etc. But lets be honest here we dont watch James Cameron movies for the story it's the awesome special effects, and the atmosphere and characters what make James Camow movies so good. Give me a shit story but I will forget about how bad it is because of the good pacing, characters, effects of the overall movie.

Nowadays people want too much crazy complex deep stories, some of the greatrest movies of all time are simple popcorn movies with great action.

Just got 4 tickets for the early morning showing (3:40 am Thurday 17 December) I think I'm insane - never gone to a cinema in the morning :lol

Has anyone here been to the London IMAX before? What's it like? Is it true IMAX? Went to the Odeon IMAX in Greenwich but I wasn't really impressed; it's nothing like the Pathe IMAX I went to in Amsterdam. I heard the screen is massive... what's the sound like? OMG I can't wait!!! :D

YAY!

For what it's worth, I watched both Up and Avatar Day in Dolby3D, and Up definitely felt "dim", but the Avatar preview didn't feel as dim. It was still garbage because the glasses were really dark, really uncomfortable and heavy pieces of bulky shit, but just saying, Up might just be a shitty 3D transfer.

We've an XpanD 3D cinema over here, I don't suppose anyone knows how it compares to the other techs

e: I see the question has at least partially been answered already

Lucky guy most of them have gone.

I'm so glad i booked as soon as they went up for sale, i must have been one of the first people to book as they went up for sale at 12.00am, had my pick of the seats. :D

Already had enquiries from people who know i have plenty of tickets for various showings, but they are not for sale, told them weeks ago to book but they weren't 'feeling' the trailer and said it looked rubbish, well that's their loss now. :lol

About Terminator, all of your points have been discussed as to why they wouldn't be feasible. Though I don't think this is the thread to retread those points.

Something that's been bugging me for a while. Jake's avatar, looks eerily a lot like the dude from twilight:

I don't see it either. I know that Twilight guy from other pics. However the Avatar looks a bit like Ewan McGregor. A bit...Mostly he just looks exactly like (surprise) Sam Worthington. ;D

Yeah. I ordered mine 45 mins after they went on sale (at like 1am or something back in october). This Friday. And I sit about.. 4/5 rows from the back, right in the middle. My friend owes me a blow job.

Have you been saving the gif I used on you for a similar occasion? I'm afraid it didn't come off quite as well.

To answer the question: Jett. Jett would find it interesting, which is exactly what I said you clod.
It was very simple, I wasnt saving up the gif I just borrowed your own link you numbnut. I was actually defending Avatar here, unfortunately you are so stupid to comprehend this part. :lol

Still not expecting much out of this after i was dissapointed with the comic-con footage. I'm going on friday. I think it's better i'm going in with my expectations in check.
