A) Discuss aspects of Avatar.Zeliard said:There isn't exactly a great deal to discuss when the movie isn't out yet.
Here it seems that RealD is the preferred of the two methods.mjc said:I apologize if this has been asked/discussed already in here but I have a quick question.
I see that Sculli was gonna detail the differences between Real-D and the 3D that the rest of the theaters will have (I'm assuming it's Dolby 3D?) There's one theater somewhat near me that has Real-D but everyone else has Dolby 3D...which is the better option if I'm gonna see it in 3D?

B) Discuss trivial minutiae surrounding Avatar.
Secret option #3:
C) When confronted with nothing interesting to discuss re: Avatar, do not discuss Avatar.

Considering the limited amount of 3D content, it'll be at the 3D cinemas long after there is real demand for it anyway. Why For? said:I know it's not important but I hope this doesn't 'flop' sales wise in relation to expectation.
I know it won't beat Titanic, but I want SOMETHING to beat Titanic.
Can't they just leave this at the theatres for a year or so regardless? Just to give it a shot?
Well all of the LOTRs opened on Wednesday, so if it werent for that, one of the Lotrs would probably have the biggest December opening.LeMaximilian said:Damn! I Am Legend beat out the LOTR films for Dec. opening? Really?!
Saargabath said:I'll be seeing it tomorrow night ( french "premiere", just a bit early screening as it's out on wednesday. ). I'll post my impressions.
You'll be fine. It's like wearing a pair of sunglasses over your regular ones. It's not ideal, but doable.gdt5016 said:I'm seeing it in RealD this weekend.

I believe them, just because it'd be a moronic thing to lie about.mjc said:Hmmmm ok..so out of curiosity I called the swankier new theater closer to my house and they said they're presenting it in Real-3D even though the Real-3D website doesn't list them as participators. Sounds fishy.
Yup. Its not perfect but you should be fine.gdt5016 said:I'm seeing it in RealD this weekend.

I disagree that motion artifacts are notably worse in 3D, in fact the light levels seem to be a little lower with RealD screenings, and the darker it is, the weaker we see changes in colour and that helps with smoothing out the artifacts that are natural to 24fps.Saargabath said:I saw UP and the 15 minutes footage ( avatar day ) with 3D glasses and while some scenes definitely deserved to be in 3D, when the action is too fast, the frame rate is too low so it can be annoying. And I am no VG frame rate whore.

I believe it's a common impression that 24fps in 3D is even less satisfactory than in 2D, however personally I've found it pretty much the same, if not better.Saargabath said:Well you do have a point, but what I felt during the jungle chase was quite odd: shaky camera doesn't bother me in theaters while my sister can't watch Bourne 3 for instance. Well during that scene I almost had a headache! Maybe my eyes weren't accustomed with the darkness, or something was wrong with my glasses ( unsynchronized? ), or it was just in my head : p I guess I'll figure it out when I see it in 3D again

Try reading the full review. That's the most coherent sentence in it; it's a satire piece, not a review. :lolCassidyIzABeast said:excerpt from the new review on RT
It's an element called "unobtainium" that the military is really after. That's "unobtainium," not "easy-to-obtainium," so perhaps the military should settle for something really easy, like "Kardashium" or "Real-Housewives-of-Orange-Countium."

Believe the hype.
Avatar is better than any 3d film you've seen before.
You must see this in 3d.
Beautiful. Epic. The first 21st century blockbuster

the story is straightforward for the most part, but yeah - it's well told. it'ssilverbullet1080 said:For a movie like this, it seems less about naysayers and more about... mehsayers. I think everyone agrees that at least the visuals will be outstanding, but the story and design dull the excitement for some.
Because the design of the aliens and mechs look like total ass? And while it's well told, it seems like most reviews seem to agree that the story isn't anything fresh.
julls said:the story is straightforward for the most part, but yeah - it's well told. it'sbut at its core it's a story that invokes an emotional response. well it did with mebeen done before thematically (by cameron, in fact)
i disagree with you about the alien and mech designs, and i feel the quality of the visuals are a huge part of most films, but anyway - the editing, music, and pacing are spot on. most of the action scenes are insanely intense and it really doesn't let up for much of the length,.particularly the last hour or so
it's easy to nitpick certain design aspects but the fact is, on the whole, this is one of the most visually overwhelming, massive, absorbing movies i've ever seen, and i can't remember the last time i've watched so many relentless action scenes with such emotional weight and purpose. there are scenes here that could not have, and never have been done convincingly in other movies. not just in scale, but in terms of content, and despite all the craziness you still care for these characters and what happens to them (good or bad). it made me feel like a kid again - it all just works, and it's wonderful.
it deserves to be absolutely huge, and i'm sure it will be. i'm more excited about seeing it tomorrow than when i saw it last week, put it that way. i'm ranting, but i'm excited. still.
the 'unobtainium' line got a slight cringe from me. also, what's this about tron 3d?
haha, the perfect description. normally when i see a movie whoever i'm with says 'what did you think?' as we shuffle out. when avatar ended we took off our glasses and i just had this stunned, idiotic grin on my face. i've never seen anything quite like it.superfly said:you sum it up perfectly. Cinema has always been designed to immerse audiences and provide escapism into a films world. Avatar takes that immersion to the next level. I haven't been so giddy in a cinema for a long, long time.
