Assuming Cameron still wants to make it, yes.Revelations said:So is it a safe bet that we can guarantee a sequel to Avatar?

I will ask a question that will certainly divide a house.
TDK OR AVTR?
SpeedingUptoStop said:Sorry guys, "MOUNT THE CURB">"I SEE YOU" (in terms of greater cinematic achievement).
I mean, have you ever mounted a curb? In Imax, I felt like I was there. Mounting that fucking curb.
Guardian Bob said:"Well follow Jake and Neytiri," Cameron revealed. "I have a trilogy-scaled arc of story right now, but I havent really put any serious work into writing a script," he said.
Rendition released of what super earth may look like:What a welcome event the release of James Camerons new film Avatar must be for scientists working on the question of exomoons satellites orbiting extrasolar planets. Imagine being a Lisa Kaltenegger (CfA) or David Kipping (University College London), hard at work exploring exomoon detection and possible habitability when a blockbuster film is released that posits a habitable moon around a gas giant. The films exomoon, called Pandora, fits a scenario that exomoon hunters tell us could exist, orbiting a giant planet in the habitable zone of its star, and it draws public attention as never before to exoplanet and exomoon detections.
Interesting exomoon scenarios beyond gas giants are also possible, as this image shows. Were learning that we can detect exomoons using tools like transit time duration measurements, and there are other methods, too, like microlensing and distortions of the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect. A paper from Kipping that we examined here recently makes the case that a Kepler-like instrument could detect exomoons around gas giants in the habitable zone down to 0.2 Earth masses that would yield 25,000 stars, for example, in Keplers field of view that could undergo screening for such moons.
What Lisa Kaltenegger asks in her new paper is whether we could make any definitive statements about the habitability of such worlds. And it turns out the answer is yes, assuming were using the right equipment (a 6.5-meter instrument, like the James Webb Space Telescope, would be required). And assuming that the exomoon in question is close to maximum separation, in which case an exomoon transit across its star (as seen from Earth) is comparable to the transit of a planet of the same size, provided that the projected semimajor axis is larger than the stellar radius. The transits of planet and exomoon, in other words, need to be separate events so that we can make the necessary measurements to characterize the exomoon.

Thought the movie was total popcorn fun. Totally worth the 20 bucks!
Yup, 20.

Jibril said:That's exactly how I feel about it. First few minutes where breathtaking. Establishing itself as the 2001 of our generation in terms of technical achievement. The entire first 10-20 minutes was beyond what I could have ever expected it to be.

Solo said:Calling it the 2001 of our time isnt really apt. 2001 was panned initially and no one knew what to make of it. Took many years for it to get the respect and esteem it now has. Star Wars is a much more apt comparison.

1. First hour and a half was useless, I don't want to watch Pocahontas HD
2. Fight Scene at the end was good
I've only seen the last page so the only debate I see right now is the Avatar vs. Dark Knight one...I say TDK by a mile. I think some people are forcing themselves to like Avatar because they were part of the hype machine, and if they don't trick themselves into believing it, their souls will be crushed.
TLDR: Average movie, TDK is better
Not liking the movie is fine, but that argument pisses me off so much. Read the thread before you post bollocks, lots of people loved the film after being indifferent, and hating on the movie before seeing it.BattlestarDT said:I just got back from this movie (yeah I know im LTTP) and I thought 2 things

Also, TDK. It's just the better film.
zoukka said:TDK is better. And I didn't even like it that much on the second view. It was pretty entertaining on the first time though.
And the Star Wars comparison is pretty believable. The biggest difference between those movies is a memorable cast though. And do I need to mention the score...
jett said:An outstanding score would've elevated Avatar to new places. Lames Horner ftl.

zoukka said:Yeah I loved the boldness in Aliens and True Lies's score. I can bring parts from both of them to my mind instantly. That's pretty rare for pure action movies.
Also one of my biggest problems was with Mr Generic Marine. I mean empty protagonists work sometimes, but I was used to Cameron having strong charismatic main characters in his movies. I wish Grace was the main character in Avatar :b
Jibril said:Since it's been mentioned that this thread is now bigger than the TDK one...
I will ask a question that will certainly divide a house.
TDK OR AVTR?
I think, on a qualitative spectrum, The Dark Knight is the better film. TDK is a great film. I personally feel as though there are more than a couple of things holding Avatar back from being considered a great film. That said, however, it's a very good and very captivating film (even more-so than The Dark Knight).Jibril said:No one for TDK yet?
It'd be interesting to see why.
The reason, is that TDK was hailed a cinematic achievement in terms of film making, when it first came out. I'd really like to know if someone still holds that stance.
Yes.JGS said:I think Dark Knight is better written, has better villians, & more intense. If I had it in graph form against Avatar it would probably win. However, Avatar beats it in the very abstract category of pure emotion. This causes it to win by a wide margin for overall prize.
They are both the complete packages though, which is mandatory to be in my top ten. Avatar pushed Star Wars out of it (It was on it's way out anyway).
nib95 said:Out of curiosity what makes Jake a generic marine and by the same token, how then isn't Grace a rather cliche/generic good guy scientist character? Also, what is your idea of a non generic lead marine/soldier?
I actually thought Jakes character was brilliantly realised. Fearless, brave, bold and careless all at the same time. Cheeky but not witty with constant one liners. Cocky but never arrogant, and accomplished in the things he does within the film, but still always humble and retaining a sense of humility. He never really lets any emotion get to the extreme and I liked that about his character. His qualities aren't as down your throat as with other leads in similar roles.
