The other James Cameron movies I've seen also use the old trope of an evil corporation (WY in Aliens, Cyberdine in T2 and whateverthefuck it is in Avatar)

I mean c'mon...its 2009, Cameron is really good, but using a bad corp. is just lazy
Movie themes are a product of the times; look at the world around you. I don't think it's lazy at all.

Removed because I was a little ticked off at a stupid comment.

In any case I find it unbelievable that anyone wouldnt want a sequel to this. It really would have a chance to do something amazing. Thank god he has a plan. I would dislike this movie even more if I didnt know payoff would eventually come.

I went again at 3:30 today and it was a full house. When I left the theater there was a line down the hallway of people waiting to get into the next showing. Crazy!
Gaf we should all go see this 4+ times apiece, even though it will do well, I kind of want James to have the second spot now!:lol
Fox should give him control of the studio at this point!

Cameron already has stories for 2 and 3 mapped out.

By the end of the trilogy, I have a feeling it might end up being moreso an Alpha Centauri Trilogy than a Pandora one...

I don't know if a sequel is warranted though. Would be kind of pointless no?
I maintain that a sequel is utterly unnecessary. This was a perfectly self-contained story. I know Cameron has a three movie arc mapped out, but I'd rather this one be left as is.

It's a minor thing, but on the second viewing I thought that opening shot of Pandora was really not needed. It should have begun with Jake opening his eyes.

Bullshot?

If I had to guess, it looks like the tree of memories scene.

Pretty sure its right when Jake asks her why she saved him.

And for those saying the colours look much better in 3D; people have to remember that Cameron colour-corrected the film whilst wearing the Real D glasses, so he didn't intend for the colours to be as bright as you see with the glasses off. What you see in 3D is what he wanted you to see.

I read a comparison that sums up my feelings very succinctly. To paraphrase: Watching Avatar is like watching your friend play the best looking video game of all time. It's fantastic to look at, but it's inevitably going to get boring.

Great technological marvels for their time is no match for love.

Same message in a lot of Cameron movies. Strange, since he loves his tech toys.
Next major love interest to be a tech toy confirmed.

Can't wait to see Avatar at the Imax. The last time I went to the IMAX was in 5th grade, and it was to see a movie about beavers. And let me tell you, the OMNIMAX dome made it epic.

I've never heard so many back and forth opinions on tech like realD/dolby/liemax/imax. I've heard from separate people each of the 4 are the best at different points.

Which ones have you see it in Scully, having gone 4 times?

I saw it at the IMAX the first time and LieMAX the second time. I agree with you. LieMAX is the way to go.
That's interesting, because most people have said to watch it in Real 3D over LieMAX and IMAX 3D over either. What made you feel this way?

Blown away... You know its a good movie when as soon as you walk out after 2h40m you would gladly walk back in and watch it again.

F the haters!

So...I just got back from my 3rd viewing. I like the movie even more now than before. I was really able to just fall into the movie this time and stop watching it for all of the special effects. I also had something happen that had not happened the last two times
I teared up quite a bit during hometree this time, I teared up again when Neytiri shouted "Jake, Eywa has heard you...EYWA HAS HEARD YOU!" but it wasnt sad it was just the awesomeness of the scene and then I actually cried a little at the very end when Neytiri held Jake in her arms and they said "I see you".
I dont know why it happened on my 3rd viewing and not before, but I am just that much more into the movie every single time I see it. It really is amazing.

I've seen 3D movies in all types and I can tell you it breaks down like this:

IMAX (true imax that is) has unparalleled sound and scope - best way for seeing it the first time. The projector in true imax isn't digital so there is some very slight ghosting in intense scenes, in this print of the film I found it barely noticable. Most comfortable glasses out of all of them (despite being the cheapest).

LieMAX (fake imax, digital projector) - Sound is much better than Real D, Image fidelity I found to be better than Real D and obviously true IMAX. The glasses are bulkier than Real D, but are also much taller in the frame.

Real D have slightly more comfortable glasses than LieMAX, but fails to recreate the same sound quality. I didn't find the digital projection at Real D as good as LieMAX, but it was still crisp (and better than true IMAX). Screens can vary in size, yet are never bigger than LieMAX to my knowledge).

Dolby 3D is the shittiest of the bunch.

I have no experience with 'Xpand 3D', but from what I've heard from people in this thread it sounds average.

Will post this in the OP.

What gives you the impression that I've ever seen the film in RealD?

I prefer LieMAX because the projection is digital. No artifacts and no ghosting. The screen is smaller, but it isn't a heavy price to pay. The sound experience, I found, was equivalent to the true IMAX experience. I've seen some films in RealD but not Avatar. As far as experience goes, IMAX and LieMAX are superior to RealD.

I should also mention that for this particular movie I've seen it once in IMAX (true) and 3 times in LieMAX. LieMAX is definitely the way to go for rewatches imo.

The best thing about digital is that you will get the same image quality every time, where as film prints wear down over time and become subject to slight fading and scratches from running through the projector showing after showing.
Also this.

I'd really like to know how Cinemark's XD screen stacks up to the IMAX screens.

I guess I've been ignorant about these movie 3D projections...

I knew the 3D i was watching wasn't IMAX 3D, but apparently RealD, but I didn't know about this thing called Liemax or XD or whatever.

fuggedaboutit

RealD is good enough. Best thing aboug RealD are the glasses, which you truly forget about.

Just came out of the movie... I cannot believe they named the material Unobtainium....

It upset me for the ENTIRE show...

Also that lizard creature that when touched flew up in the air ... but only in circles... I was upset at that too.. :\

Unobtainium is a real reference to mineral used for years in scientific relative terms.

One of the guy, who worked on the movie for 3 years said it was kind of bittersweet to watch as:

a whole lot of the movie was cut out. A whole whole WHOLE lot was cut out

Also says pretty much all complaints regarding character development would be moot when taking the cut footage into consideration.

Fook! Cameron better assemble a damn good Extended Cut :(

I don't understand the hype for this movie. Nicholas Cage's performance is complete shit and why in God's name are there aliens from space that kidnap children?

3/10

PD isnt the only one. There are still quite a bunch of upset whiners coming up with lame excuses in relatiion to Avatar's strong legs. Even here on GAF, a lot of people hated on Avatar even up until a few weeks before its release. :D

wont be able to give numbers but AVATAR is enjoying a very healthy bump up today. Sherlock and Alvin are not as nutty at they were yesterday {nm}

ARGH!
That version had BETTER be released!
I want it to win Best Picture or at least become WW #2 so Fox can justify spending a little more money to complete the longer version.

Well he was talking about a 4 hour cut of the movie, so I seriously doubt that would be released. (nor would it all be completed obviously)

But yeah, after reading more of the scriptment and hearing just how much was cut, im even more anxious to see an Extended Cut

I'll rage if there isn't one

This is one whining that makes least bit of sense. Do these people also think Plan 9 is a stupid name for an OS? Dragonball a stupid name for a CPU?

I'd really like to see that. More than Cameron's other movies, there were seams in Avatar that showed. The opening still feels very compressed. And especially the voice over,
"Norm's attitude has improved lately, it's good to have him back on board."
Paraphrasing. It really stood out the second time around since no context was provided in the movie.

People are really starting to overstate the scientific pedigree of this word.
Its origin is in science fiction and it's used mostly humorously in the real world.

And while it's not a substantial criticism of the film, it's a valid one nonetheless -
It's like calling a character Deus Ex Machina.

It also sounds stupid.

I really enjoyed the movie.....but tell me is this some sort of inside joke? the whole tearing up bit.....wow. I somehow find that hard to believe considering how cheesy it was
