I just saw this movie again(I took my sis and cousin to the movies). This time in Real D 3D. Wow thats a huge difference from what I saw(crappy 3d). Not only did it actually look 3D this time, but it looked like it was running at twice the frame rate and at a higher resolution... I didn't even notice the first time around that the Navi had 4 fingers and the dream walkers had five :O

When you see it again look at Neytiri when she has her war paint on....she has a 5 fingered hand print on her chest. All in the little details!

A shot of Cameron filming one of the scenes cut from the script, when Quaritch is talking to the troops in a quarry and they are attacked by a Banshee:

ake2qv.jpg

Though this scene has some pretty humorous dialogue from Quaritch, I'm kind of glad that it was cut as I don't like the idea of the first time we see a Banshee in the movie is when it is being mowed down by bullets.

Also, was looking through the Survival guide, and it shows and describes all the stuff that Cameron mentioned in the script about the "Dream Quest" From what the insect that bites Jake is, to the glowing worm that he has to eat (even the Jar that the insect is kept in)

Theres even a page about that Teylu worm that Neytiri makes him eat :lol

There is one thing that I hate about sci-fi which this movie has in spades: the stupid random apostrophes in the middle of names that make no sense whatsoever.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apostrophe#Use_in_non-English_names

Basically, those apostrophes are glottal stops. Where in English they're sometimes indicated with silent letters (in my name, for example: Graham, the 'h' is a glottal stop, though it's often unpronounced) when transliterating from a foreign language inserting weird letters is taking more liberty than is probably reasonable.

Na'vi is Na(stop)vi. Short truncated 'a' sound rather than a longer 'a' sound that meshes in with the 'v.' Unlike the hardcore here, I've only seen the movie once, so I don't know if they follow that pronunciation or not.

So while they're clearly there to make the language more foreign, they aren't just decoration. They actually make it *sound* more foreign when pronounced.

Saw that posted on another forum and tested it to see if it was real...what has Cameron done. :lol

Also, box office update:
SATURDAY PM UPDATE: Guess what? Twentieth Century Fox's 3D Avatar is still #1 in North America and overseas. It took in $13.3M domestic Friday, down -48% from New Years Day, and at least $22M for what's expected to be a hefty $50+M weekend. (Numbers to be refined.)
$22m Saturday would be a 65% jump from Friday, and a 15% drop from last weekend. And her numbers are a low ball estimate, they're always revised up.

Edit: and a 27% drop from last weekend. 0_o

Holy shit, now THAT'S a bump! :lol
Was definitely not expecting that.

Saw this for a third and final time last night in IMAX 3D....it’s still amazing!

I was pretty surprised that the cinema was like 97% full after all this time.

And everyone who came with me were all utterly blown away by it all. :D

Just got back from fifth viewing. Awesome. My friend who hadn't seen it loved it and the cinema applauded at the end. The session was sold out too.

On the way home he's telling me he's been hearing everybody talk about the film and is asking me just how big this film has been, only for the woman on the radio to start raving about the film and urging everybody to go see it if they already haven't. EVENT status people.

I read the original scriptment. I wonder why he made Trudy's death so much less meaningful? I guess he really wanted Jake to shine.

Both scenarios with Quaritch surviving the Dragon crash are cool though, the final one where he jumps out of the wreckage and it lands behind him, and the one in the script where he emerges from the lake it crashes in Predator style.

I do see why he cut out the Trudy/Norm thingy, that would have been way too hard to swallow.

That was also the first piece of concept art we got.

What's that thing in the background, just behind the helicopter?
It looks like a whale.

Speaking of whales, I'm definitely interested in the oceans of Pandora.

What? That is the Dragon gunship.

That's some mighty fine shootin' Ace.

There are a lot of little minor differences in the final battle. Like
Neytiri on her Thanator killing the GET SOME dude, instead of him being smashed by one of the Hammerheads

I think I like the way its done in the movie better, even without the little Hells Gate side thing (which really isnt a huge deal). Cameron pretty much implied he cut the final battle to center on Jake and Neytiri, so its not surprising to see that scene gone, or Trudy's role lessened.

I think I prefer the version in the film. I dig the visuals of the suit emerging from the lake, but Quaritch's bailout sequence is just ridiculously badass.

I've heard many a "holy shit" and "awesome" muttered when he lands. :lol

One thing I didn't understand is that Waynefleet appears to be a ranking officer - which is why he's leading the troupe of men against the Horse-riding blue monkeys. Yet in other scenes he's Trudy's bitch.

Any opportunity to GET SOME, Im sure

Cameron even robbed us of an additional GET SOME in the theatrical version :(

Wainfleet WHOOPS while Norm looks like he’s about to puke.

WAINFLEET
Yo Chacon! Get some!

Wait, WHAT?
It looks like a whale.

EDIT:
Oh, I see it now.

Oh, and:

A PLANT with swaying tendrils which reach toward Jake as he
passes.

This forest is more alive than any on Earth, with plants that
react and move like animals. Jake white-knuckles his rifle
as if every shadow conceals razor-fanged death.

Im surprised we didn't see anything like this in the movie. I was definitely expecting to see more reactions from plants themselves, aside from those shrinking tube things.

This time I did see a new creature when you see Grace reunite with her school-children. There was this small animal in the background and I can't even remember what it looks like.

Do you remember if it had wings?

The book says some Na'vi keep Stingbats as pets, so it could be one of those

There's also some of what sounds like Bishop's Countdown in the film's final battle.

Anyway, I saw the film for the first time earlier today. I waited this long because IMAX 3D showings are sold out every fucking time here in NYC, unless you get them days in advance. The only word I can think of to describe Avatar: Amazing.
I'm definitely going to see it again. Maybe not in IMAX this time, though... is there a difference between the IMAX 3D and Real3D (or whatever) versions aside from the size of the screen?

LOL, Wainfleet will forever be known as the "GET SOME!!!" guy. :lol

Though I laughed more at his final facial expression and squeal. :D

wow, was i wrong about his movie. although some of the art direction was like a horrible airbrush, i though the experience was great. 3D really ads a bit to the immersion.
I do hope the technique will improve. There is quite a loss of sharpness and light output when you have the glasses on.

But holy shit.. the cgi in this movie is just mindblowing. the characters are completely believable.

Me and 6 others are hitting an Imax 3D showing later today. Looking forward to my second viewing.

I'll take one if it's not to late. I'll pay a bit more if needed =)

Okay, I'll be picking up programs for all of you. And I'll take another 5 requests, but please don't bail out! Around ¥1800 total and then there are PayPal fees and such, so be careful when calculating in your local currency.

Oh, I forgot to mention that before my screening this time, there was a 3D trailer for Toy Story 3.

The 3D looked non-gimmicky, but in the same way didn't seem to use the depth in any of the quick excerpts we saw. Very much like UP.

I saw it yesterday in 3d for the first time (and my first 3d movie), nice.

It didn´t blow me away after seeing it in 2d and I won´t go out of my way to see future 3d movies, but it was nice for little things like the sparks and ash raining down.

Plus the damn plastic of cockpits etc looked so unbelievable good in 3d, I always closed one eye and opened it again to see how much better it is in 3d. :lol

Had a few instances of blue stuff ghosting around background/foreground stuff, though. And sometimes faces looked weird too close to metal and plastic things.

And I´m almost tempted to risk my account in a bet about it and I want to post it for possbile "called it" posts in the future:
Na´vi aren´t a product of Pandoran evolution.

Either Eywa or something else made them the way they are. They lack eyes, they seem to lack 2 limbs, they are in control of all braid-linking stuff, never the other animals etc.

Biologically designed park rangers, probably.

Prove me wrong, Cameron :D

#5 at VMAX tomorrow night. oh yeah.

the bf made a subtle suggestion he wanted to go. that's all i needed :lol "yeah it could be nice to go agai-" *book*

I PMed you about it, too. With the extra 5 requests, can I assume I made it under the cut?

I've been trying to watch it again for the forth time with my cousins but the damn IMAX 3D Experience keeps selling out usually a day before. The legs on this motha are looooong.

So I ordered tickets for my second viewing together with my girlfriend.

It was pretty much impossible to get tickets for good seats at a reasonable time of the day. I got some great seats... two weeks from now! Though I guess that's for living in a capital.

Finally saw the IMAX version, and it didn't really add much. I don't understand the bandwagon for 3D - the images still have no texture and still feel like 2D pop-outs. The whole theme of the movie is really tired and overdone, but it's directed in a very entertaining fashion. I also could've sworn I heard the beginning to Celine Dion's titanic theme in Avatar's main theme.

I dunno, it's a good/decent movie, but pretty irritating to see all the praise for something that is this shallow. Seemed like the market researchers did their homework a little too well -- they really honed in on 4 or 5 pretty obvious segments. Aside from blending overt action with romance to reel in couples, the IMAX EXPERIENCE was eaten up by tech fetishists and sci-fi geeks and there's no doubt that the 3D exclusivity of this film is fueling the crazy sales. The irony being that environmentalists were also enjoying the energy expenditure and Cameron's mob-league of fanboys are fueling the free word-of-mouth.

It was a great movie when you consider all the effort spent in crafting some constant momentum for entertainment - and I guess that bit is where Cameron deserves real credit. Special effects are nice too. Probably beating the horse, but hopefully the 3D experience doesn`t become the quintessential motive for watching movies from now on.
