I'm having to watch this film as homework for my screenwriting class, and, man, I'd almost forgotten how fucking solid this movie is. I think it's definitely one of the better remakes/reboots out there. That opening scene is absolutely flawless. Anyone else enjoy this movie?

I remember I saw it at the world premiere during SXSW, which was hands-down the best theater experience I've ever had. The whole crowd was way into it and everyone would cheer and applaud any time something awesome happened. I don't think I'll ever forget that night.

I really enjoyed this remake. Most remakes I hate but this one, while not as good as the originals, was still a very good film on it's own.

It was bad. It didnt need to be made because they did nothing new with it except remove tge things that made tge original fun.

they assigned the evil dead remake as homework for a screenwriting class?

yeah. it's specifically a screenwriting for horror class and we're supposed to go in scene-by-scene and identify everything the script reveals to you, as well as note when the inciting incidents and act breaks and such occur.

we were assigned films based on their similarity to the premises for our scripts we'll be writing throughout the semester (mine's also a demonic possession movie). the professor said he skewed toward recent stuff so we could see what sort of scripts are getting bought nowadays.

It was a great looking movie, with really cool soft focus shots that make the whole thing kinda dream/nightmarish. The climax was also really fucking sweet. The script is a piece of shit, but I think the style makes up for the lack of substance in this case. It had some seriously intense gore effects, too.

It was so "extreeeeeeeme" and trying to shock with the gross factor that it forgot to add the creepy.

It was whatever. The chainsaw at the end was hilarious though

For me, this movie delivered. I thought they did a great, great job.

One of the few remakes/reboots that actually did something for me.

I even watched all the extras since I was so impressed with it, I was curious about the process. The filming seemed pretty grueling (especially with them going practical on so many effects) and a real labor of love.

Great atmosphere, great gore, made a couple original scenes creepier, created a few new shocks of it's own. A remake worthy of the name.

However, the third act was completely horrible, creating a giant plot hole for the entire story and climaxing in a really silly, low-budget battle that was supposed to be terrifying but ended up just being a silly letdown.

I'd give it a "B".

Really divided opinions in here. I have yet to see the film.

Definitely check it out if you're a fan of the original.

Old school Evil Dead fan here, and I liked it a lot. Took the original concept, played it straight, threw in some twists for fans of the original... Good example of a remake.

Enjoyed the hell out of it, it was fun, very gory and had a great performance from the lead. Sadly there doesn't seem to be a sequel to this or the old ones on the way anytime soon.

It's got good gore. A little lacking in the scare department. I feel sorry for that guy who got hit with every weapon in the movie.

I thought they took something that was ripe for being a letdown and turned out something that lives up to the name without rehashing it.

Shame there seems to be a bit of a falling out between the director and Raimi, would have liked to see where it went from here.

I came close to buying the DVD when I saw it at Best Buy, in a clearing bin for like $5 but I decided not to at the last minute.

I hope it's not being held up by your prof as an example of good screenwriting for horror. I thought it was good enough, but from a screenwriting perspective it's not great and pretty ham-fisted in a few respects.

I never saw the original, but the one last year was awful. Almost cringe-worthy horror cliche's (thank goodness Cabin in the Woods made so much fun of it).

Best part was the ending, because of dat chainsaw.

It didn't resonate for me.

something like Drag Me to Hell was way better

Drag Me To Hell was one of the shittest movies I have seen. My mate and I both joke about how bad it was.

Same with that movie The Conjuring. It was so shit, I dont know why people kept going on about it being one of the best horror films of last year.

I really enjoyed this remake though.

Went in cynical as a Evil Dead lover, liked it.

As probably as good a reboot / remake / whatever as we could have expected. Evil Dead with Campbell / Raimi attached in anything other than Exec Producer status is never going to happen again so glad it ended up as a watchable romp. Levy was solid

Didn't like Drag Me to Hell for the record.

Great movie, and i am a big fan of the originals and Drag me to Hell.

The pacing of the movie it's really well done, and the especial effects were really dope.
I would say that the script and directing it's pretty solid, making even not so good actors shine.

The way the events ramp up towards the ending it's pretty cool too, shit get's crazier and crazier to the point of being silly, with the siren and the blood rain.

Also i would like to say that the horror cliches are completly aknwolaged by the movie and embraced.

This is what I was thinking. It's not a movie that blindly follows them.. it's a movie that knowingly follows them out of a love of the genre.

I mean even the original Evil Dead was almost a knowing homage to horror, and this is a knowing homage to Evil Dead, so of course the creators are completely aware of the tropes at play. They're reveling in them.

This. I waited a while to see it because I just didn't care and thought it'd be awful but then was totally surprised at how much I liked it.

Drag me to Hell was just awful, I'm going to make my fiance watch it as a punishment movie for making me watch Splice.

It's absolutely exceptional, and one of the only modern homages to that era of retro horror films that properly balances over-the-top gore with an honest, non-ironic tone. It isn't afraid to step into the realm of the absurd, and doesn't have to smash the 4th wall to keep the story interesting. Plenty of modern horror films "subvert" the tropes of the old movies by just calling them out, as they follow the paces. Evil Dead 2014 knows your expectations, then sells you on a more intense version of what most people only intended to appreciate ironically.

Well I think this exercise was less about overall quality and mostly to highlight pacing, and I'd argue that this is a really well-paced film. Plus like I said before he assigned us films based on the loglines for our own scripts we're writing and he wanted something within the last five years.

Also, ya'll crazy, Drag Me to Hell was fantastic

It was extremely forgettable. I saw it at a drive-in and mostly remember just having a good time with my girl. The original, on the other hand, owns.

First of all - it's not a remake or a reboot.

Secondly - I need this screen grab as a big ass painting on my wall

I don't think it was bad movie, but it was really pointless remake.

They didn't have anything to add to original, there wasn't any different view or social commentary (not that I expected social commentary in ED). Nothing.
