RTTP: Marvel Midnight Suns - X-Card

So I'm back here again, I had a itch to play a Marvel game and MUA3 wasn't quite doing it (also that game is weirdly hard and grindy for some reason, I still haven't finished it despite owning it since day 1)

and this time, I'm going for its PS5 Platinum as opposed to continuing my PC save, so lets begin:

So this time I'm doing all the DLC and side missions to powerlevel, I found myself underlevelled on the PC version alot so this time I'm preparing a bit more: My best team so far is easily Ironman, Captain Marvel and Magick, so strong! Act 1 breezed by and I got so many of the Troplhies already, its gonna take 2 playthroughs as I need both Light and Dark paths, but this is a hidden gem that unfortunatly suffered due to the weird delay it got and the failure of the Avengers game(which I kinda liked tbf)

hidden gem

It's not. Combat mechanics and the card system was pretty good tho it easily becomes underwhelming when you realize how few cards there are and most heroes are useless( like Blade and Deadpool) and theres no reason at all not to use the most op ones. I 100%'ed the game on steam despite giving the game a 6 and I have no idea why the fuck did I do that. Story was dogshit and made no sense. "Im only trying to protect you child". Goes out of her way to always kill you and the ending was rofl. The other aspects of the game, the exploration and dialogue was also shit.

This shit was riddled with normie tier characters. No Werewolf Wolf by Night or Man-Thing? Nico Minoru and Magik are the deepest cuts.

I mean they wanted it to sell, but I agree, having a few lesser known occult characters would be better, Morbius was a god choice imo

For a game called Midnight Suns...and dabbles with the occult and vampires and stuff.....no reason to not have Werewolf By Night in some capacity....but the BIG omission is Moon Knight!! He would have been perfect. Melee as well as ranged attacks too.

I loved the game and I'm really looking forward to doing a second playthrough. Unfortunately fuckers from 2K aren't offering the season pass with a bigger discount. You can literally get the legendary edition for not much more, but I won't give them what they want. ;)

A surprisingly good game that I unfortunately played on PC and my experience, especially towards the end of the game, was terrible. I wish to replay it on PS5 one day and get the platinum.

I started playing this last week too. Super fun, though some heroes seem super weak compared to beasts like Marvel or Iron Man. Spidey is a room clear monster thanks to his free opportunities and chain hit abilities. Deadpool and Blade specifically are kind of meh.

Overall, I'm having a great time with it.

Great game. Most if not all characters writing are on point. I unfortunately slept on this game for a long time. Would've loved to see a sequel.

Wow, Nico is in the game? That’s pretty cool (mind you, I only know her through the original Runaways run by Brian K Vaughn, I never really kept up with the individual characters past that).

But yeah, I do want to check this game out eventually.

Jake Solomon getting fired over this bomb was just a shit move by 2K. They should have allowed him to make an xcom3 or something, instead they went , well you had a spotless record and made two games that have been selling for years… bye and dont look back

Game was really fun and caught me by surprise.
Would love to see them expand on the formula a bit, and maybe tone down the friendship part of the game to make the combat and cards more meaty and deep.

Edit.
I thought the roster was fine personally

I started a second playthrough a couple of weeks ago. The pass was on sale for 16. Wasn't a bad price so i got it. The deadpool missions and chars were fun. Haven't done the rest yet. Excellent game though. Underrated, it deserved more.

I enjoyed the game. I only wish there was more time in combat and less time back at base. With all the DLC, there were too many people to talk to back at base. I really loved Ghost Rider's combat. The female characters actually look nice and feminine. It is a shame I even have to point that out these days.

I really like her character in the game, she was a bit whiney at first but grows on you (saying that Magick does as well but at least she has a in game reason explained)

Fun game. As others have said, the roster is pretty mid. Need Moon Knight at the VERY least.
I've not seen much of Moon Knight (I always got him confused with Azreal from Batman for some reason) and need to watch the supposdly great D+ series at some point so having him here would've been a great intro

Wait really? It wasn't his fault, the game was fine, it was marketed badly and delayed for a month into a busy Season, and that means waiting even longer for Xcom 3 ffs, that being said I've still not beaten an Ironman War of the Chosen run yet

I agree, its charming at first but it takes too long to do that and the Abby stuff like finding the Words of Power and mysteries there, I know you don't have to do them, but you get the best Cards for each hero that way (and the Platinum requires it anyway)

This too. Who asked for a whole DLC dedicated to morbius? Why would I want to play as Nico? Or Robbie in place of OG Ghost Rider? No Punisher or DD? Where's the entire Fantastic Four? Magik is cool, but there are 20 X-men I'd rather play as. Could have had Nightcrawler if you wanted a teleportation gimmick.

Super questionable roster. I will say though, I actually like Captain Marvel in this game. She's not as annoying as her MCU counterpart (despite many characters in this game being influenced by their MCU counterparts).

Magick and Nico are part of the MS though, I do agree though, Punisher, Daredevil and Moonknight fits better than Mobius and Storm, Deadpool is kinda weird as his gameplay doesn't suit his character at all (the thing is Wolverine has the same gameplay you'd expect from Deadpool so I can see why its different)

I do want a sequel, it makes me wonder if more DLC was planned at some point, if it was up to nme, I'd make it a larger Marvel one, similar to MUA2 or 3's roster, though I do like the more Grounded Earth only roster in this

I played the game before it left PS+ Extra (the base version, no DLC). I've been meaning to vent about this, but thanks for making a thread, I'll vent here.

I think the core combat with the cards sounds like it wouldn't work, but surprisingly enough, it does, more than you'd expect. The moves that some characters have are very much appropriate and look flashy enough, sometimes great even. Also things like upgrading your cards - it's very much that lizard brain of yours, but number go up, dopamine too. Lizard happy.

But then there's all the other shit. First and foremost, the story and the characters. The story, ehh. It's standard superhero fluff. But the characters. I'm not saying everything should be like MCU, because no, that's just one interpretation. Comics are famous for having the weirdest versions of whatever character, and that's fine, great even! The point is, that version of a character, or any character, should be even remotely interesting. That is not the case here. The writing is atrocious. I won't elaborate on this, but if the game had ended with Thanos appearing out of nowhere and saying "would you want me to snap all of them?" I'd be like "could you?"

Then there's all the in-game economy, with way too many currencies. And of course all the MTX you can eat if you're so inclined. The cosmetics, at least the ones you can earn, are pretty shit. Then there's "hey let's do a BioWare", which relates to the writing - the moments you have to spend with your co-heroes are really nightmare fuel (the facial models and lip sync, or lack thereof, will keep you awake at night), but bear them you must, because the bonuses (yeah, the cards - again that lizard brain thing) are so good. Running around in third person searching for some random shit with a fuckton of invisible walls, while in combat you can jump from one edge of the map to another with ease, is frustrating. Generally, the gameplay outside combat involves a lot of padding. Which you don't have to do... but you will, because of the cards.

But the combat, while fundamentally very solid and entertaining, is far from perfect. There's a constant lack of enemy variety. New enemy waves out of nowhere. Recycled bosses. Bosses that just have multiple health bars with no variation between them. Almost non-existent verticality, apart from maybe using some environmental effect. And aside story missions, there's no mission variety. You'll take on tasks like "Defeat Enemies" and "Stop Hydra Truck". I'm not describing the objective. Those are literally the names of the missions. With no narrative context whatsoever, although sometimes you'll be required to bring along $HERO because reasons.

At its core, I think this game has quite a bit of potential. But it's just so frustrating. So, by IGN standards, 7/10.

That is completely fair and I agree with a lot of it

For example, I played this close to release originally on PC/Steamdeck and the Abby sections were the worst parts, replaying it now from fresh, theres a bigger area than I saw, but I don't want to do it it really, I wanna get back into the action so to speak

I'd honestly like a sequel, warts and all. Just that a) hire some writers with a cursory understanding of Marvel characters, or characters, or writing in general even, and b) up the mission variety, give some context to the action. Like, instead of "Defeat Enemies", you'd have "Mayhem in Manhattan!" - Spider-Man is needed in Manhattan to... yes, ultimately, defeat enemies, but there's a point to it. No need for any fancy cutscenes. Just a few comic strips (drawn by an actual artist of course, no AI shit) would be appropriate, funnily enough.

And c) figure out the BioWare stuff. I'm not saying it's conceptually bad, hanging out with your buddies can be fun. But Blade keeping a book club... Yeah. It just doesn't work. I don't know who greenlit that shit, no one at Marvel I hope. They used to send out like brand bibles when things were going the wrong way.

I just started the game for the first time recently and it is even better than I thought it was going to be. Looks amazing in 4k on an OLED and the combat is way more interesting and enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. I was worried because there was all these complaints about how cheesy the conversations were but playing the game, it's the complete opposite. The conversations in the game are surprisingly well written and humorous. The game is just straight up one of the better tactical RPGs I've played in a very long time.

Also, I thought the woman on the cover of the game was Ms Marvel but apparently not. Also, the female main character has an insane amount of cake.

Nearly done with my first playthrough and really taking my time with it and doing all the optional stuff

It is a lot of fun, it makes me want more Midnight Sun stuff with Nico and Magick, very underrated marvel characters imo, though Robbie as Ghost Rider… meh

This game has a great mash-up of Xcom like battles with deck building mechanics, it was pretty fun.
The “team building” story parts made me want to kill myself.

Good to know. I've read a million comics but wasn't familiar with the MS before this game got made. I thought they were original.

I hear the chances of a sequel are slim since this tanked. Too bad. I avoided myself it due to the deck building stuff, but it's actually pretty well implemented.
