RTX 5080 | Review Thread

I'm kinda surprised so many people bought the 5080. It was either 5090 or 5070ti for me. The 5080 was like 10% faster but didn't offer more vram. However, in my neck of the woods it was almost 50% more expensive when comparing the cheapest models. Also the 5080 didn't really do much that the 5070ti couldn't do.

In the end, i just decided if I was going to pay the price difference, I should get an experience that I can't get on the 5070ti. The performance gap between the 5080 and 5090 is like 50+%. It gets even wider the more raytracing you do. Will the 6080 be faster than the 5090? I'm not so sure so, the 5090 could hold it's value well.

For me, the 5070 Ti was priced around $750-800 at the time. I bought the 5080 for $999. The 5070 ti is the better value, no doubt. It was a "why not" upgrade for me more than anything else.

Well...that and the fact that I can't have Sticks Sticks thinking he is better than me

6000 series is expected to be on a node shrink, so the leap is possible.
I don't doubt it's possible for sure. The thing is that will Nvidia give all that performance if they don't have to? The 5090 is 82% of the 9070xt. If AMD deliver a 50% increase with their flagship next gen, it's still behind the 5090. If that's the case, the 6080 will almost certainly not be faster than the 5090. As long as they're slightly faster than the amd's flagship with the 6080, people will buy Nvidia.

I think Nvidia's new strategy is to protect the status of their former halo gpus for at least one gen? This could all backfire with the 6000 series however when I look at their balance sheet, I get the feeling that they don't want to sell high end chips to gamers when they can sell it to datacenter for so much more.

Ahh that makes sense. In my neck of the woods, the 5070ti was around $1000, the 5080 around $1500 and the 5090 around $3300.

Yeah still a bit more that I was planning to spend originally.. but I guess could go with 5070 Ti with the VRAM but fuck it.
Problem is this thing kinda already happened with 3xxx series during covid times. I got an 1440p monitor and was really waiting for the new 3080 then all went shit so I got an overpriced 3070Ti. Then soon felt 8Gb was not ideal so went for the 4070ti with free Diablo 4 at the time before release because agian 4080 cards were kinda expensive.
Now last year I had to jump on one of them 4k 240 OLED monitors, still with 4070Ti it was mostly fine on DLSSS performance but recently I often do 1440p still just for the high framerates mainly in UE5 games. With mentioned 2nd monitor the 12Gb VRAM is already crippled sometimes. Anyway kinda fuck Nvidia for always skimping on VRAM, we already know some of their cards would last way much better if they had decent amounts. Anyway this is what it is, not playing the waiting game and yes I also think 16Gb should be fine for a while now, especially is all goes shit then no next gen consoles anytime soon either to worry about.
To be fair, even the 5090 struggle at 4k 240.

I have to go dlss balance to get that 4k 220 range in black ops 7 and BF6

Node shrink or not. I am not upgrading. I know Nvidia. Their 6090 will go back to 24gb with 30% to 40% performance boost.

They can keep it. Even the 5090 is an overkill. Also I don't have plans to pay 2k plus for another video card. Getting too old for this shit

Oh yeah sure, to be clear but that's not the idea, I usually prefer to lock at 120 when I can and I'm good. Don't see any reason to push it to 100% when that's fine for these games that I play regularly FC26, Diablo4, BF6.
And then I see what's up with DLSS + FG in the big new games, but so far with UE5 games I always end up dropping to 1440p because 4K just brutally murders performance every single game..
Though I wonder how much I'll like the multi FG after testing it, just to push it a little more beyond 120

I was debating between a 5080 or 5070ti yesterday. The lowest prices on Amazon and NewEgg (US), new, with good reviews, and were available to ship immediately that I saw were:

5070ti: $850
5080: $1250

The 5070 Ti is the better GPU at those prices.

If they had given the 5080 more VRAM from the start it would be a 5080.

I can see nvidia completely delaying the 6000 series while AI is their top focus. I could even see nvidia letting the 5000 series last extra long and have them on a lesser node (but better than their current one) while the AI chips get the top nodes.

But I dunno. The market is so crazy right now trying to predict anything feels pointless.

5070 Ti has a masive overclock margin which makes it very close to the 5080. I tried two 5070 Ti and was able to achieve +500 on the Core and +3000 on Memories without issues. It's a massive FPS difference, like 12%.

This is the good part, I saw 5080 is also good on OC so at least there's that, kinda the main reason why I went with the beefy card instead the basic 2 slot card. Okay also that cool ass dragon on the MSI.

Yep at this point I wouldn't be surprised if that happened. And again if this happens hand in hand with next gen consoles are also being pushed back then grabbing either card definitely feels like a wise choice now.

60 series is looking to be an even worse deal so I bought the 5080 at $1050. It overclocks well.
Ill try to be optimistic and say that maybe AI will have collapsed by then and they will price the 6000 series well with good availability to generate some good will.

LOL...who am I kidding?

No Way Reaction GIF
