Yeah. I'm sure Sony would announce PS6 right after they will release new 650€ console in PS5 Pro. That would be really stupid. This isn't the 360 gen.
If Sony releases a PS5 Pro next year, with all the momentum they've got, all they need to do is announce that PS6 is being worked on and they completely undermine next-gen Xbox.
I'd even argue that a PS5 Pro isn't necessary for that, just a PS6 announcement.
An early next-gen release would be the dumbest thing to do for MS.
Read what I said.Yeah. I'm sure Sony would announce PS6 right after they will release new 650€ console in PS5 Pro. That would be really stupid.
And I don't know what would be a problem for Microsoft releasing new Xbox earlier. Sony had new consoles in 2020 and 2024, Microsoft will have consoles in 2020 and 2026 (for example).
Eh, I'm not sure that would be insurmountable.I agree with this and the backwards compatible bump in framerate, but it's going to be a hard sell for many buyers and a pain in the rear for multiplayer devs.
So you want to tell me that Sony, who waited up until october to reveal PS5 Slim, so they would not slowdown sales of "base PS5" will announce years in advance after release of PS5 Pro that they are working on PS6? I though Sony is not worried about XboxRead what I said.
I said Sony just needs to announce that they are actively working on PS6 to counter an early next-gen Xbox.
The Xbox-brand is dead outside US and UK and there it's dying as well.
An early next-gen release will only make things more difficult for Xbox.
It's pure PR. Simple as that.So you want to tell me that Sony, who waited up until october to reveal PS5 Slim, so they would not slowdown sales of "base PS5" will announce years in advance after release of PS5 Pro that they are working on PS6? I though Sony is not worried about Xbox...
Again, PR.Also. Everybody knows that they will be working on PS6 after PS5 Pro. Formal announcement of a console that will be out in 2-3 years sounds stupid as hell and wouldn't help you with anything because chances are that you don't even have final specs of said console.
Depends.Besides, an early next-gen Xbox will more likely piss off the shrinking Xbox fanbase than it would attract people en masse.
It just sends out a signal to the gaming community that MS is willing to kill of their gen sooner rather than later.
It'll be a PR-disaster for Xbox.
The question will be how many xbox fans will even be left.Depends.
Since we just witnessed 3 years cross-gen period I really doubt any Xbox players would even notice less games being developed for Series X/S. Especially since Sony will still have PS5 on the market that will be supported by same games...
I saw how angry Nintendo fans became after Nintendo killed of WiiU early. So angry they were, that Switch is now sitting at 130 million consoles sold. And WiiU sold way less then Series X/S.
It seems like desperation to me but the only way I could see it make a little sense is if they can get that console out for GTA6 and clearly be the best place to play it
Even that is a stretch imo
The question will be how many xbox fans will even be left.
So WiiU being absolute catastrophe even with might of Nintendo first-party is somehow not comparable? Just because? The question will be how many xbox fans will even be left.
And I knew you'd bring Nintendo into this, but nobody will take the comparison between Xbox and Nintendo serious.
Let's face it, Xbox is dying. Even Spencer clearly stated it.
I admire your optimism of GTA VI being released in spring 2025You're a great dude and GAF member, but come on man. We all know ain't no way the next generation Xbox is coming out in time for GTA 6. That's Spring 2025.
And if MS is content with current state of affairs. There's plenty left if they go for a high ticket, lower volume console.
No, because Nintendo is a household-name.So WiiU being absolute catastrophe even with might of Nintendo first-party is somehow not comparable? Just because?
MS might be lucky to sell 50M this gen, especially if they want to release next-gen early.Please.
Xbox is dying maybe in head of people who would not buy one anyway. Last time I checked, Series X/S is still on pace to +- match Xbox One output in terms of consoles sold and that's with all first-party games being released on PC (which was not the case in XOne gen). So thanks to you I know that selling 50 million consoles is "Xbox is dying" and 13 million WiiU sold is somehow "bump in the road."
Yeah. And even as a "household name" they managed to sell astonishing 13 million of WiiU consoles and they killed that device after less then 5 years on the market. No, because Nintendo is a household-name.
Xbox is irrelevant.
MS might be lucky to sell 50M this gen, especially if they want to release next-gen early.
There's some mental gymnastics going around.
And if MS is content with current state of affairs.
They won't get the success of X360 again and even that was due to Sony messing up with the PS3 at launch.
But I thought they were going third party ..
Well, yeah, but I've been saying MS should go 3rd party for a long time. They'll never get that console sales success again and that's why they would put their money where their mouth is and not care about console sales.
They state of affairs would be much different if ms, as S SneakersSO suggested, where making games for ps. It changes the game, including being prepared to just sell games if game pass fails.
Well, yeah, but I've been saying MS should go 3rd party for a long time.
It's the most logical thing to do.
We also thought console sales didn't matter. But I thought they were going third party ..
All this is just bs talk. People buy iPhone for 1k every single year. There is zero reasons they cant make updates every 3 years. As long as the systems are backward compatible there shouldn’t be an issue. All they need to do is when ordering the chips they plan a few more years out and ensure whatever new chip comes that it has the ability to work with older code.
Zero reasons in today’s age we need to live with 7-10 year cycles for consoles.
This could work.
Concept of "generations" is basically useless nowadays because even with "generations" we experienced 3 years of cross-gen stuff. And thanks to backwards compatibility and prevalence of live service games people are still playing games that they were playing in XOne/PS4 generation.
Just mandate from devs some guardrails in terms of old console support - something like Apple is promising iOS support for two iPhone generations (or however long they are promising support) and basically make Xbox consoles as an "optimised PC build" that will be releasing every 4 years (for example).
Well. That's question for Microsoft not for me.Rush releasing a new generation, when the general public completely rejected the current one, won't suddenly massively boost sales, instead they'll just alienate their current fanbase.
It worked with the Wii U because everyone thought it was a device for the Wii and the marketing for that console had been disatrous and misleading.
With the Xbox Series, the public had the choice between a very affordable console (S) and a very powerful on (X) yet rejected both.
So what exactly would a "next gen" console do differently to change this downwards trend for them ?
Understood but console don’t cost near the cost of phones to manufacture. Hell just sell modular parts. Most game are bottlenecked at gpu now so slide in an new gpu if you want 4k/120Consoles aren't phones and Sony/MS aren't Apple.
When it comes out in 2025, it will probably be on the same node as the PS5 Pro.If it comes out holiday 2026 then 3nm is totally doable.
I think the PS6 will use Tsmc N2P (2nm) in 2028
Even if they planned to cut this gen short it would not be sooner than 2026. Which means 6 years for Series X/S. Which is only one year shorter then PS4/XOne gen.Alienating your xbox series S and X users 3 years after they've bought their console, that sounds like a great idea
Consoles cost more to manufacture than phonesUnderstood but console don’t cost near the cost of phones to manufacture. Hell just sell modular parts. Most game are bottlenecked at gpu now so slide in an new gpu if you want 4k/120

And here we are 3 years into the gen and were still barely getting any current gen only titlesEven if they planned to cut this gen short it would not be sooner than 2026. Which means 6 years for Series X/S. Which is only one year shorter then PS4/XOne gen.
I don't understand why there is such a fuss about...
Mate if your a movie enthusiast and own a high end TV, you should definitely take the plunge and buy a proper blu ray player. I just bought the Panasonic DP 820 and the picture quality pisses all over a game console. It also upscales dvd and blu ray brilliantly too. They are still expensive yes, but you won't regret itI always sell off my current system when a new system comes out.
Series Y better have a 4k drive so I can play my 4k movies.
If not, I'll have to bite the bullet and get a 4k player which by then I hope dumb down to $50-100. Right now, they are still steady around $200-300 CDN. The prices dont seem to be crashing down like the DVD and BR player days.
First, you said this...This could work.
Then just went on to explain exactly why it wouldn't work and doesn't make sense.Concept of "generations" is basically useless nowadays because even with "generations" we experienced 3 years of cross-gen stuff. And thanks to backwards compatibility and prevalence of live service games people are still playing games that they were playing in XOne/PS4 generation.
And this is that bubble logic that most Xbox fans seem to have. They say a thing, but its almost as if they are in a bubble because they seem to forget that what they are saying could apply to the other platform.Just mandate from devs some guardrails in terms of old console support - something like Apple is promising iOS support for two iPhone generations (or however long they are promising support) and basically make Xbox consoles as an "optimised PC build" that will be releasing every 4 years (for example).
But that's more because you need 4-5 years to develop AAA game. And here we are 3 years into the gen and were still barely getting any current gen only titles
Pushing out another machine early just seems completely pointless when we are barely even getting games solely designed for the current gen yet
Imagine how ridiculous it's going to be when developers are pushing out games that are designed for xbox one, xbox series s, xbox series X and xbox Next, because that's genuinely what we are looking at here
