According to a new note from reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo at KGI Securities and corroborated by our sources, Apple plans to introduce a dramatically overhauled MacBook Pro later this year. Kuo says the device will have a new “thinner and lighter” design with design cues taken from the 12-inch MacBook, as well as Touch ID support and a new OLED display touch bar above the keyboard.

Kuo’s report explains that the MacBook Pro updates are the “brightest spot for Apple’s 2016 rollouts” and will come to both the 13-inch and 15-inch models sometime during the fourth quarter of this year.

The OLED display touch bar will replace the physical function keys along the top of the keyboard, while the design will adopt new metal injection molded hinges as reported earlier this year. Additionally, the refreshed MacBook Pros are said to feature USB-C support and Thunderbolt 3.

In addition to upgrading the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pros, Apple will also introduce a new 13-inch MacBook similar to that of the 12-inch Retina model that was just upgraded with performance boosts. According to Kuo, Apple plans to make the MacBook Air the entry-level option, while the MacBook will become the mid-tier choice and the MacBook Pro will remain the high-end variant.

Reliable Apple rumormonger Mark Gurman says his sources agree.

Sell me with a three-year-old CPU if old.

Glad I didn't bite on the MacBook.

Gimme that 13 inch Pro.

By the way, that 13 inch MacBook seems like a waste considering the regular one is 12 inches. Maybe they mean 14 inch screen in a 13 inch chassis.

That OLED strip sounds dope, but I wonder what it could be used for. Has such technology been used on other computers before? Maybe I'm just misunderstanding what it actually is.

Hilarious that the entry-level product is arguably a better option than he mid-tier one.
You mean the Air? Yeah, it really is. Even though it hasn't been updated in years it's still faster than the current revision B MacBook. Really all it lacks is Retina, the slightly lighter design and the new keyboard and mouse. Oh and the lack of ports. It lacks a lack of ports.

It's fine if they at least announce it at WWDC but if they don't, the event will be a failure in my view. I mean the only "big" news at that point would be OS X 10.12 or MacOS as they are now calling it again with Siri. Oh wow, desktop with Siri. >_>

Having a 15" $2,000 notebook that should at minimum have Iris Pro 580 instead of Iris Pro 5200 is required.

an OLED strip for the keys on a MBP now like brightness, volume, music controls, etc. It could have force touch and do cool things based off your open application.

this is what I've thought they'll do... 12", 13", 14" and 15" laptops. (12 and 14 = MB, 13 and 15 = MBP).
Same.

That mid-tier choice

Modular, contextual controls based on app would be awesome.

Hope they follow through with a redesign, it needs it pretty bad. Had a slight thought about an rmbp but got a xps 15 instead. Q4 gives me enough time to decide if i want to keep or sell before resale value tanks

Hm

It would be fine for function style buttons. You can have nifty things like a volume slider and buttons can change.

That said it does sound kind of gimmicky.

Pushing a button a few times is easier than fussing with a capacitive slider. Hell, there's no way I'd want capacitive OLED buttons constantly glowing at me in the dark.

I believe by the time everything is sorted out (i.e. by the time the MacBook is worthy enough to completely replace the Air) they will have 12" and 14" MacBooks and 13" and 15" Pros. Just enough to set the two designs apart.

I do miss the glowing Apple though. Doesn't make sense why they remove it. It's not like it's a piece of electronics. It's just a hole in the case that lets the LCD backlight shine through. But then again I was sad when they didn't put a power LED on the new machines because I like how it pulsed when the machine was sleeping. Also I still don't understand why the rMBP doesn't have a logo under the screen but the new MacBook does as do the Airs.

Kuo is stupid. The Air is obviously going to die off once the MacBook is mature enough. It's only a matter of time. There will be no "mid-range" model. There will be Consumer and Pro. The Air is just there for now because the MB isn't up to the challenge yet. It hasn't been updated in forever and won't be. If he can't tell the MacBook is the new Air then he is lost. The Air is the new optical-enabled MacBook Pro. Eventually it'll slide to the bottom of the Buy page where no one will ever look. But not until the MacBook gets a drastic price drop to match. That's really its only other problem. It costs more than an Air. But give it a few years and it'll probably come down much like the original Air did. (The original Air cost $1,799US) It took 4 revisions for the drop. (2007-2010)

13" MacBook alongside the 12"? lol ok. Honestly it all sounds like bullshit.

If the Pro redesign really is 4th quarter then kill me now.

Sounds good. I don't know if need to upgrade at all this year. I did have a personal 3-year plan of upgrading, but my 2013 beast is still going.

So would this be on the 15" MBPr? There's no non-retina MBP right? God, I keep fearing my nearly 4 year old one will crap out before they deliver the real update.

Yeah... not sure any positives outweigh the negatives.

yes this rumor is in regards to a new 15 inch and 13 inch macbook pro

glowing apple looks terrible these days. It's time to let it go.

OLED for the function keys, that stuff is supposed to be on almost 24/7 enjoy your burned in hotkeys after the 1 year mark.
My god i cannot believe how poorly thought this stuff is.

its almost like it's just a rumor and we don't have all of the information yet

Sounds great, but I think I might ride out my '12 for one more year and wait for the refined version.

What I really want is more onboard storage.

Don't care for touch keys but if it permanently decouples the laptop keys from th F1-F12 then thank you based Cook

BUT a second screen off plane of the monitor that is a touch screen sounds pretty unapple. I'm guessing that it doesn't happen in the end.

Even if Kuo is not always 100% right Gurman agreeing and being this close to the product makes me doubt he's that wrong.

I'm not doubting them. I'm saying we don't have all the information about how it works. you really think Apple wouldn't have a solution for burn in or engineer it in a way that makes it a non issue? I highly doubt it

It's OLED, even if they manage to double the lifespan of it compared to the high end ones given the nature of this second screen it will always be subject to have problems in a short period of times. Unless you change laptop every year that is.

Also a bar replacing physical, separated buttons with real non simulated tactile feedback... this is so badly conceived...
Trust me i don't want to this to be bad because i would like to replace my 4-5 years old MBP with a new one but these choices... they go against everything i like and find well thought.

hey I'm not trying to argue that it's a good idea necessarily either I'm just saying wait until it's actually announced and detailed before completely dismissing it
