Rumor: Next MacBook Pros to have OLED touch strip, Touch ID in Q4

Not really, the current retina MacBook Pro was released in 2012 and was(and still is) 18mm thick.

The Dell XPS 15 InfintyEdge or whatever it's called was released 7 months ago and is 17mm thick.

Apple can easily shed a lot more than that as shown with the new Macbook which is only 13mm thick.
I don't care if they can shed a lot more than that. I'm saying it needs to at least match the XPS.

That's exactly when I'll be ready to buy--give me that 15". My early-2010 13" is slowly fading.

Glad to see Apple still cares about MacBooks (and, to a lesser extent, iMacs). As long as they stay high in build quality and OS quality, I'll be a fan.

I dont see how they can out do XPS15 cane out last year. Macs were very attractive and high quality laptop few years ago but I think now the Windows machines have out done them. And if you buy it from MS store, you can even get the extended warranty for $130.

That's like something that the Newton had and which Jobs (Peace be upon him) would have disapproved of.

Any way - it sounds like a very early 00s laptop gimmick.

A touch strip is not a good implementation of that though, this would be (ignore the call of duty thing please):

Actual buttons that you can press with a screen underneath that you can customize given the context and or your preference.

I was imagining it like that Optimus Maximus keyboard from over a decade ago. It was such a big deal back then.

However that's a lot of extra energy usage for just a keyboard. So we'd have to see how Apple does it.

I don't want anything interfering with my palms.

Yeah exactly, that but for the functions keys would be pretty cool but a strip with no or fake tactile feedback is terrible.
For the energy usage i think the single led behind every key like there is now in the 12 inches MacBook should be enough...

Funny thing is that the wikipedia article you linked mentions the Apple patents from 2007 for this.

???
How would that interfere with your palm?

Mark Gurman suggested on Twitter - and I think it makes some sense - that the reasoning behind the OLED touch strip is so that function keys can be changed or added by an OS update rather than having to make new hardware. He mentioned the example of a Siri button. I mean, when you think about it, if Siri's shipping in 10.12, not a single Mac sold so far has a dedicated key to use it. I'm sure there will probably be some keyboard shortcut for existing Macs, but they'd probably like it to have a dedicated key just as Mission Control and Launchpad do. The touch strip would allow them to just add a key where there wasn't one before, essentially, so they don't have to worry about that stuff in the future.

Sounds like a gimmick. I imagine they might add on ready to select application too that look like iPhone icons.

That sounds...Ew. The nearly spartan minimalism of the rMBPs is why I like them. An OLED function bar sounds like 2008 HP gaudiness, even if Apple does it better.

↓

It's because it will replace the current row of function keys, is a capacitive strip and not real buttons and because it's OLED.

Like I said, sounds pointlessly aesthetic.

Unless they use it to function as an extra display of customizable buttons or features

Ive been sending them bug submissions every month for an emoji button.

Finally the salvation to the MBP!

I jet but I think this can actually be a really cool thing. I'd love to have the player buttons (pause, skip) be able to transform into in browser player buttons for when I'm listening to soundcloud online or youtube and am on another application. That would be a dope feature.

I think this is a great idea. It can transform with every application-pause play in iTunes, scrubbing, editing in final cut, replace widgets.

Plus imagine being able to download different buttons to customize it. I never use my keyboard key light level buttons. Being able to add more desktop space by allocating lesser applications to the touch strip would be cool.

I only worry that if it's application controlled we might start seeing ads on this bar. Imagine that.

I can't wait for someone to hack it to play videos or display MS Word. And someone will use the hack to "save power".

Smart to include touch ID. I wonder where they will put it though. Assume it will be next to the trackpad.

Jury is out on the strip, but I will wait and see. The trackpad for the new MB sounded like a really stupid idea until you actually tried it.

Are there solid timelines for Kaby Lake chips that would be suitable for MacBook Pros? Kaby Lake may see a release this fall, but that doesn't mean the chips that Apple would need (specifically the quad core + iris pro) would be available. Apple may be behind on Skylake, but the quad core and Iris pro chip that they are speculated to be using for the 15" wasn't even really available until very recently, despite Skylake launching awhile ago.

4th quarter...

Not that far away.

Most likely the analyst is referring to Apple's fiscal quarter - meaning that Q4 starts on June 26th - Sept 26th. We are currently in Q3.

Goodbye ports, you will be missed.

The unibody MacBook Pros in 2008 took "design cues" from the MacBook Air in terms of materials, how they were constructed, keyboard, etc. but they didn't feature a shitty door with a single USB port.

I wouldn't be surprised to see *some* culling of ports (my guess is rip HDMI), but they're not going to make a one port MacBook Pro this year. No way.

It's gonna be all usb-c.

If they do ditch magsafe for the pro's - I hope they will either have a hybrid magnetic usb-c connector or smart connector that is flush.

I have a first generation Macbook Pro Retina 15" it's about time for me to upgrade soon. If I can trade this in for the newest one I will.

For those bummed out by the Q4, cheer up because people on the Macrumors forums pointed out that Ming Kuo mentioned the 4th Fiscal Quarter and not the Calendar Quarter. I think when he mentions the Calendar, he uses terms like Spring or Fall.

So expect it to come out between July 1 2016 and September 30 2016?

I'm gonna wait for the first revision of this new MBP myself. I try to avoid first gen versions of laptops

Normally I'm the same way but this was a good bet for me. The first generation of the MBP retina had zero problems and any updates so far have been so little that I still feel like my laptop is the flagship for Apple in terms of power and extras.

It has to or Apple's back-to-school market is going to be horrific
