Rumor: Next MacBook Pros to have OLED touch strip, Touch ID in Q4

'm surprised they waited so long. School starting across all grades and institutions this month. Practically everyone is buying old tech

Well you could buy the used machine if it's that cheap then try and sell it later. You might get the same amount back if not more.

Does your Hackintosh do its job well enough for now?
Not really, graphics are a bit of a problem and no sound. I just wanted it for Xcode and it does a decent job. I also kinda ruined it when I tried upgrading it to 11.6 so it's either try to fix it or just get this cheap Mac and just sell it down the road until the new one.

I'm really disappointed with Apple because they're selling thousands of devices for a full retail price, using technology that is two years out of date, and they seemingly have no problem doing that. Even worse, if someone buys the non-retina MacBook Pro (say a college student or someone with less money), they're buying a 5 years old computer at about the same price it was introduced at in 2012.

I'll still buy whatever the new MBP is when it's announced, but I think this is shady.

Both Gruber and Jason Snell talked about Apple getting burned by skipping Intel's last cycle as it's been extended for so long now. It's still their fault but I don't think it's some master plan of theirs to fuck off customers.

Will they show Macs at an Apple Watch event?

There is a good chance it's only one event like last year. They did iPhone 6s(+), iPad Pro, new Apple TV, plus final iOS stuff plus Watch OS2 stuff + watch bands. It was a busy ass show. This year they could do iPhone (which isn't gonna be omg crazy, more like a 6ss) then dedicate time to the new MBP and new Apple Watch. Do a quiet update for Mac Pro/iMac since that's not major news anymore to most people.

I don't have a dog. Checkmate, Apple!

I was gonna say murder your cat but the cat is probably 2 steps ahead as always. Our technology can't beat 100 million eons of evolution of predators designed to enslave and eradicate humanity.

Surprised its taking so long to announce this.

EDIT: Wait the last page shows a mac with even less ports? Not even firebolt ports?

I know part of the problem for a bunch of the *desktop* Macs (but not all of them) is that the most recent Skylake revision doesn't include chips suitable for several Mac models (obviously new Xeon chips only get released once in a blue moon, but also desktop-class socketed Skylake chips with Iris Pro didn't happen with the most recent wave, which basically disqualifies the low-end iMacs and the Mac mini from getting up-to-date).

That problem doesn't apply to the MacBook Pros, though - that's just Apple's mistake through and through. If the new MBP's aren't running Kaby Lake it's going to be a big bummer - I think it makes the most sense at this point for anyone who can afford to wait for Kaby Lake in their Mac to do so.

Of course, DisplayPort 1.3 support over USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 (aka the ability to drive an external 5K display off of a single connection) isn't coming until Cannonlake in late 2017, lol. It's going to be a long winter for desktop Macs.

Yeah, this year's fall event almost certainly won't have an iPad update and if there's an AppleTV update it'll be modest as hell and mostly about getting a $99 SKU out there. It'd be possible to do iPhone, Apple Watch 2, and MacBook Pro in one event, I think.

I don't expect Mac Pro or iMac updates though, really.

OLED for the function keys, that stuff is supposed to be on almost 24/7 enjoy your burned in hotkeys after the 1 year mark.
My god i cannot believe how poorly thought this stuff is.
That is kind of odd. The whole benefit of OLED is high contrast ratio... I don't see how that will benefit a menu bar. It's not like you'd watch movies or play games on the menu bar...having the buttons with a more advanced screen tech than the main display would be a pretty big wtf move, too.

The Apple Watch is also OLED.

Low power consumption + Apple getting started with OLED technology I guess. Not like their IPS retina displays are to scoffed at, and the next one likely features more advancements.

The Retina display is definitely nice for LED tech. I really like it and I tend to be very critical of LED displays.

Intel's presentation on the Kaby Lake rollout is making it sound more and more like the new MBP's are still gonna be using Skylake unless Apple secures a deal for early access like they often did back in the day*. First device to get Kaby Lake is more likely gonna be the MacBook, perhaps.

*I don't think this is likely because it just doesn't happen anymore, but arguably Apple's the best partner for aggressively rolling out USB-C and Intel wants that to happen, so if it does end up happening, I think that's the reason why.

I bet y'all complained when they removed Nimbus 2000 ports too.

Showing MacBooks and Apple Watch 2 at the iPhone event would be a good idea imo. iPhone 7 is expected to be underwhelming, so having other products to show could help improve feedback of the event.

Why do you get that impression? They're already shipping Kaby Lake, and new products are arriving this fall. That screams "Kaby Lake MacBook Pro" to me, moreso than Skylake

This. Correct. I like you. I've been waiting years for a new Mac Book Pro

First Machines Using Kaby Lake Processors Coming This Fall, but MacBook Pro Not Likely Among Them

"Intel often launches low-power 4.5W Y-series chips and 15W U-series chips first, neither of which are suitable for use in the machine that people are most curious about, the MacBook Pro. According to an old Intel roadmap, Kaby Lake chips appropriate for use in the MacBook Pro, the iMac, and the Mac mini won't launch until the very end of 2016 or the beginning of 2017, meaning any Apple machines released in the fall of 2016 may be limited to Skylake chips. Yup. 4.5W chips would be suitable for the 12" MB, and the 15W would be suitable for the Air if Apple still cared about the Air, but the 13" Pro typically uses 28W chips and the 15" uses 45W. Plus Apple uses the variants with Iris and Iris Pro, which typically ship even later than other 28W and 45W CPUs.

Sigh, I'll be fine with Skylake. It is a massive improvement over Haswell. Hurry up and take my money, Apple.

In all fairness, upon a closer reread, the "according to an Intel roadmap" part of this is fairly key. It's the most up-to-date information we have, but it isn't *new* information. Intel hasn't released an updated roadmap in quite a while; hopefully they'll do so within the next month. There's a chance that that old roadmap is inaccurate, at any rate.

Apple needs to start making their own laptop processors.

That would most likely mean switching to ARM processors.
It would improve battery life and make an iOS/MacOS merger possible but am not quite sure Apple wants to break compatibility with everything on the Mac side(including Windows).
At the same time I don't think custom ARM chips would yield the performance benefits Apple wants.

Yep, ARM chips clobber Intel on using very little power but Intel has a huge performance-per-watt advantage. And yeah, x86 compatibility is a big deal for the Mac.

WAIT

FOR

SKYLAKE
I'm guessing the reason they haven't updated the MBP with Skylake is because none of the 28W chips have launched yet. The 15W iris chips have been available.
WAIT for Skylake Iris. It's a noticeable jump from Broadwell Iris.

Skylake Iris is not marginal.
Pls wait for skylake.
where is my skylake mbp
Skylake MacBooks Apple. Pls respond.
Can someone please slap some sense into me before I buy a damn retina MacBook.
skylake
skylake macbook pro. with usb type c/thunderbolt 3. pls.
Is there a reason this MBP update has taken sooooooo long?
One theory is that they're skipping skylake and waiting for its successor to ship in volume.
Kaby Lake is a step gap... it is the Skylake+.

I believe new MacBook Pro will be announced until September... Kaby Lake won't be ready.

Unless of course rMBP launches in 2017.
It is, but it also features nice additions like usb 3.1, HEVC decode, and tb3 which are important for future proofing.

checking on apple's site and it costs an extra $500 to add another stick of ram and a 3.1 cpu? christ. i was interested in getting a new macbook pro as I've never tried it out, but I might as well just build another desktop machine with that kind of money

The MacBook has drastically lower repairability and generally much less egregious upgrade costs, IIRC. Maybe we'll see something like that come to the MBP with this new form factor. Not sure whether that'd be a net improvement or not, but it's what I expect.

tbh everyone should just wait for cannonlake in late 2017/early 2018 for 5K support

(that's probably the next time the mac mini and mac pro get updated, lol)

If I could wait for Kaby Lake I would, but that's not happening. As long as these guys get TB3 I'm fine, then in three years I'll be fine with whatever's out

Just bought 2015 pro retina. I like it a lot, should I even consider returning it for the new one?

The rumors say the new one will be lighter, thinner, have faster processors/graphics, 4 USB-C ports + headphone jack as the only input/output, Touch ID for fingerprint unlock/passwords, and an OLED touch strip. I don't think the actual look/design language will be that different though.

Questions remain whether the OLED strip will actually be cool/useful, whether it will adopt the new keyboards found on the MacBook that many people don't like, and which processor/graphics combo they will actually use.

The problem with the new MBP, if rumors are to be believed, is that it's going to be dongletown for a couple of years.

The current one is very generous with I/O, as historically the MBP has been.

I mean USB-C only means it's not even compatible with your packed-in Lightning cable.
