Genius really, all the while making the base console relatively affordable, basically catering to both crowds while steadily building what could be a huge games catalog and remaining relevant. It sounds like the perfect Nin-storm...

With the NX you can tell they didn't really have anything ready or final to talk about last year. Also, they are scrambling to release it ASAP since the WiiU has suffered a premature death.
The only reason I think they are really going to be able to release it so fast is because a lot of WiiU games were probably changed to NX games years ago or whatever new game project was started with the NX in mind and not the Wii U.

That's why Retro, and most of Nintendo's biggest teams, have been so quiet and why we have gotten so many "spinoff" titles like Federation Force, Triforce Heroes, Hyrule Warriors, etc.
They are saving the big games for the NX's launch window.

We actually saw the Wii controller in a video in Nov 2005. I will always remember that. Also, the infamous April 2006 when they revealed the name.

And you can't assume too much about Nintendo being quiet. They have adopted the 6 month announcement to release strategy for all but their zeldas and smash bros. Brand extension spin offs are a strategy using third/second parties is something iwata mentioned years ago. I doubt that many upcoming NX exclusives started as Wii u games like you said. Those would have been decided on much longer ago. Especially as Nintendo debated the risk/return of them on a console like the Wii u vs the cost of still supporting the system until the successor.

Also, greezo is basically a secondary Zelda team at this point looking at what Nintendo has them do. I hope they get to make something original soon.

No, the Wii remote was revealed at a pre-TGS conference by Iwata in September 2005.

Like I said, we knew far more about Wii by this point. The console design. The controller. The Virtual Console. Metroid Prime 3. Smash Bros....all of these were officially revealed / announced by April 2006.

NX is still a mystery and it's apparently launching this year. It's actually kind of exciting, knowing so little right now.

Maybe (and rumours say yes) the NX will work with mobile and tablets.

You download the NX or Mario Maker app and your mobile device then links to the console and you are free to use the touch screen of your device to interact with the NX software.

That's probably the smartest way to do it. Make a handful of devices compatible with the system as "controllers".

All 3 consoles have a second screen solution right now, whether that means the gamepad, vita, or smartglass. I'm sure NX will too, though probably not built in to the controller this time.

That would be a UI nightmare for Nintendo with varying screensizes; I am certain they won't be going the SmartGlass route.

I understand that. But I was explaining why we all knew more about the Wii: because it was pretty much finalized by then.

The NX is not finalized yet. And yes, it's friggin exciting.

They can easily have the second screen by using their own handheld using connectivity features like how Nintendo used to do that sort of stuff way back when.

I hope the NX is also beautiful. And has a good name too. It was sort of sad looking at that Wii name reveal thread. I'm not fond of the Revolution name like some are but...I miss the "gamey" names of Nintendo consoles pre-Wii: Things like super, 64, game, and of course Nintendo in the title. I think we all think that the rebranding will take us back to those days of naming; I hope it does.

Yes, but they can't force you to buy it to play one NX game like Mario Maker NX or people will be pissed. Controller support (as clunky as it may be) by default, with optional Android/iOS tablet and NX handheld support makes the most sense to me.

I have not read all 79 pages but has there been a discussion around the wording more powerful than a PS4 by a noticeable amount considering the price level Nintendo usually set their new consoles on?

I can't see such hardware being released at Nintendo price levels and Nintendo making a profit on the hardware. Nintendo, whatever some people think, have their main target group as (families with) children and they can not if they want to sell to families with children set their console at a price that is on the level as PS4/Xbox One was at their release date.

To me this seems to be a fantasy concocted by some fanboy wishing for this to come true.

You don't really seem to understand Nintendo's pricing model as much as you think.

Wii U launched at $299 and $349. PS4 was $399.

Wii launched at $250. You could buy a 360 core unit for $299.

Gamecube launched at $199. It was originally going to launch at $249. You could buy a PS2 for $299.

A Nintendo console launching in 2016 for $299 or $349 could be at a power level greater than PS4 and it might even be able to be sold at cost.

Since a number of rumors have mentioned NX's power, I'm beginning to believe that it will at least match PS4 or be close to it. However, I do hear your concerns. I think Nintendo will launch in the $300-$400 range. Perhaps they'll have some kind supplemental power solution to reduce hardware cost for most people while still offering good tech? Or maybe they'll launch with two models, one that aims for 720/60 and one for 1080/60 for all games? Nintendo did mention having more form factors, rather than fewer, which I always assumed applied to a portable but perhaps I was wrong. There's also a chance the portable will be a key part of Nintendo's family strategy. Finally, I wonder how many families own a PS4 as their central entertainment machine; perhaps the lower-cost market is dominated by Android and Apple TV boxes and Nintendo has little reason to not move into the upper market.

That's all just meandering speculation on my part.

Launch price ps4 = 399$
If they can sell the thing for that price, nintendo could also do it. It's just matter of games and marketing. N does have better games, so that will not be an issue.
The issue rather has to do with their marketing. Hope they can do it again, like they did with wii, or sony does with their console.

He deleted the tweet after people here could not recognize that it was a rumor from just one source that he could not corrobate yet compared to the information he posted on NeoGAF which was confirmed with multiple sources.
The rumor he heard is that the gamepad does indeed have a screen and is able to connect with the console via remote from anywhere. It's not a fully functional handheld but you can take it with you and play your games from with any WiFi connection.

I think if they were going to do the SCD thing, they'd want to leverage it for marketing purposes which would mean being able to add an SCD within the "launch window" or some such. If they say ,hey here's a sub XBO level console and in 2 years we'll give you an expansion, i think that'd lose all impact.

Anyway, I know I'm setting myself up for disappointment because anything less than an SCD system would bum me out at this point.

That would be some crazy shit - I'm trying to think of whether it would fit my needs as a handheld enthusiast. I mostly play handheld at home or indoors, that's true, so it might do the job for me (assuming the tech works). I wonder if that would be enough for the Japanese market if there was no 'solo' handheld system released. Anyway it's probably not true.

Isn't this possible with Vita and Remote Play right now? At least on a smaller scale, i think.

So, not really that crazy, rather an evolution of the system. If this is the gimmick, i'm interested what they do about the latency, input lag, etc.

For me the most important thing would be the resolution of the display. I really like Off-TV-Play on Wii U as an idea but I don't use it because the games often look washed-out compared to the 720p versions on TV. So personally, I really hope for a 720p screen (which would also give NX an edge for Wii U ports).

The thing I hope for the most is a complete cross-platform library with a suspend/resume function between platforms. I'd love to be able to just pick up a game on my handheld when the TV isn't available to me. Nintendo would need to develop a cloud saves system and let me download a digital copy of every game I buy, but I think it could work.

Yes, has been possible since Lair on PS3 via a PSP anywhere in the world. Didn't work too well back then though.

I think basing the system around a dumb terminal again would be dumb... and terminal!
