Is there an NX hype train yet?
It's more of a hype rollercoaster

Yeah, Zen is supposedly 40% increase in IPC over excavator? That doesn't sound like LCGeek's description at all. How strong are these x86 rumors again?
It makes sense if all you care about is performance/watt. The big issue is price. Although node shrinks in the past have almost always brought with them a reduction in price, this jump from 28nm to 16nm/14nm has come with increased costs. Basically, even though you get more processors per wafer, there is something like a threefold rise in R&D costs and also additional layers/steps in the manufacturing process, which adds complexity and affects yields.
The question is if Nintendo "OK'd" 14nm finFET for the SoC a year or more back. And although the cost issue above is a major concern, could AMD's dire straights have boosted Nintendo's bargaining power?
Regardless of whether they're going 14nm or not (even if they were launching next year, I'm not convinced Nintendo would bite), I can't see any credible reason to expect the NX to launch next year at this point. It's been pretty obvious that it's coming in 2016 for months now, and it's only been getting more so with every credible bit of information we get.Why not? Aren't their 14nm chips are supposed to launch this year? And I'm on team 2017 anyway lol.
Ehhh that is extremely hard to believe. That sounds like they're trying to compete with the PS5, not the PS4

There has been a bit of a price war between Samsung and TSMC that may have allowed Nintendo some extra breathing room for negotiation. There were rumors of Samsung offering steep 14nm discounts flying around as early as October of 2015.
Given that AMD was desperate for revenue, Nintendo could have been negotiating at the right time to get a fixed cost for a number of usable chips rather than playing the wafer lottery. Without an expensive gamepad level gimmick, they might have also had more money allocated to chip development. There are plenty of plausible reasons why they could have ended up at 14nm.
Don't have enough what? Don't bug me out. I need this thing that I know nothing about Day 1.
Also if Nintendo is going with an even more cut down version of Baffin, for example, with even more disabled CU's, that would improve yields further correct?
I can't wait any longer than until the end of this year.Question. Let's say NX is the specs I kinda guestimated (under hope lol)
Would you guys be ok with a late 2017 release if this is what we had waiting for us?
CPU...4 core a72 arm couple with 2 core a57 at 2.0ghz bigLittle combo. 6 cores total
NX gpu 14nm finFET polaris gpu. 950mhz 3 teraflops

Everything we've heard and so many other hints are for a 2016 release. Why are you so much in team 2017 XD

Would depend on the clock too, which we don't know. We just have a ~15-30% gains metric with whatever the current clocks are....
Not impossible, since those gains don't sound like "just upclocked Jaguar" but it could be a Puma+, though I don't know if that gives you a potential 30% gain..

It's pointless to combine A57 and A72. That's like combining bobcats and jaguars.Question. Let's say NX is the specs I kinda guestimated (under hope lol)

Yeah. Might not be enough yield for a holiday 2016 launch. AMD could have offered Nintendo a sweet deal to reduce low yield risk for Nintendo. I'm looking into it. It's Friday, I'm in a good mood, I'll try to make another post about what I've learned since my last verified post. It'll be rumors of course and nothing huge or confirmed.

Enough of the 14nm chips. Assume it's not happening and you can't be disappointed!
It's probably best to assume it's not happening until we hear from the horse's mouth.
Presuming this is a semi-custom APU, I'm not sure how much room for failure they will have. These aren't going to be binned chips where they can salvage partial failures.
It sounds alot like an upclocked Jaguar/Puma architecture to me--say 2.0-2.2 Ghz. Zen is supposed to offer better performance than Excavator at the same clocks, so unless it's clocked remarkably slow, it doesn't match up. I'm not sure about ARM Cortex A72 or Cortex A57, though.

I'd imagine Zen would outperform Jaguar at the same clock, though we've yet to see proper benchmarks. Not clocked low. Just clock it to the same as a Jaguar in the PS4/X1.

Oh, you don't have to image that - even if only half of what AMD claim were true.I'd imagine Zen would outperform Jaguar at the same clock, though we've yet to see proper benchmarks.
For those confused about 14nm and if it's a good thing or not.

Could you elaborate on your tweet? Especially the "y'all thought i was joking" part... does that mean you have a credible source then?
LOL Nah it was just an educated guess. Polaris is exactly the thing Nintendo would want in a console. Low power consumption and very powerful.
After you've lowered your expectations, you'll probably need to lower them again after that.I've got to stop reading this thread. My expectations are getting too high and I'm bound to be let down.

We were doing well a while ago, settling for XBO levels.. now things are getting out of hand. Let's counter it and think of this as simply a re-boxed Wii U with a handheld companion.
It really is, but I'm not sure if it's possible. Given what we know, a lot things we've heard would have to be false. They'd want to stick as close to off-the-shelf as possible, and since PS4k is almost definitely using a custom Polaris 11 on an APU NX would be on par with PS4k if they were going 14nm (they'd actually have to put effort into being slower). Well, unless they base it on an upcoming Zen APU like I said before.
This is almost definitely not happening in the PS4K.

What makes you say that? The rumor says that the PS4k's APU is smaller and about twice as fast. Polaris 10 is too big, so that only really leaves Polaris 11 or something very custom, like a die shrunk GCN 1.1 with more CUs and higher clocks than PS4's GPU.
Why ya gotta bring us down, man?
BELIEVE
I really want to fight this notion that people seem to have that x86 = instant BC.
Look, the PS4 has an API called GNM that lets you get down to GPU register and buffer granularity. Moving to Polaris would mean anything written in GNM is not compatible with the PS4K. Is that something you think they'd do?
If the PS4K is even a thing, the GPU will have to look just like the old one on old (old being 2 years now I guess...) games. With maybe a flag for new GPU features on new games.
I'm ready for 2 WiiU's duct taped together guys. I'm not gonna fall for the hype again.
How many gamecubes is that?
Too bad their not leaking anything in the way of Soul Calibur NX :3
Yeah, source must be within bandai namco or an affiliate. Serkan toto was the first to break the smash nx rumor, and he's based in japan, is he not?
Incredible! Bring on E3/Direct/Whatever!
(Plus, great hunting around Doctre81!)
IntelliHeath what have you done!
