I don't know why Sony is risking hurting their userbase like this. It's a gamble that might bite them in the butt when NX (per hearsay) might be an actual generational leap. I'm not upgrading and I think once people talk to your average consumer they'll see apathy for an incremental upgrade in contrast to the hype over PS2/3/4 in the past. Sony isn't thinking right imo. If they want a shorter gen they should do a backwards compatible generational leap (a real PS5) in 2018. Publishers do not want a relatively minor spec upgrade that probably won't increase sales much in 3, calling it now.

Look, the PS4 has an API called GNM that lets you get down to GPU register and buffer granularity. Moving to Polaris would mean anything written in GNM is not compatible with the PS4K. Is that something you think they'd do?

If the PS4K is even a thing, the GPU will have to look just like the old one on old (old being 2 years now I guess...) games. With maybe a flag for new GPU features on new games. Polaris probably would not do that, scaling up the current GPU while shrinking to 14nm transistors may if there's a flag to toggle new GPU extended areas.

By the way, GNMX games may get along with Polaris just fine, but I'd hope anyone pushing a performance heavy game is using GNM.

All of this is true, but it depends on how different this version of GCN is. On another noe, does anyone know for sure what revision of GCN PS4 uses? I get mixed reports between 1.0 and 1.1.

They aren't changing the GPU GCN and re-writing their API.

As I said above, it depends on if it's different enough that they'd have to rewrite anything. At any rate, I think 14nmFF is a given. Maybe 20nm, but I doubt it.

You mean 10 years. GCN-era Nintendo would have a pretty high chance of using the best node available. In fact, Wii used the same node as PS3 and 360.

The 14nm is just us speculating.

Why are hype trains banned? I miss them so bad.

It's 1.0. Based on the 7870 (Pitcairn). Polaris are the first GCN 1.4 GPU's. They have a different memory controller and cache setup, as well as new command and geometry processors. I'd be surprised if low level instructions were exactly compatible.

10k West first eh? Nintendo is no stranger to that for NA alone, having done that for DS, Wii, and Wii U. They have never done that for Europe, however.

GCN 1.3 actually, but yeah, you're probably right.

Also, this is for everyone: There's no reason to get excited about 14nmFF for NX. If it happens, it's because Nintendo wanted to keep the size and power consumption down, not for super performance. I doubt that many of you actually care about that.

Forget specs - this place will be a nightmare when they announce the final name and it kills the hype. People have grown to love NX and it will be hard for us all to let it go.

Next up - NX is more powerful than current high-end PC hardware and has 64GB RAM.

They do also have the 8 ACEs x 8 command queues (so 64 command sources, to the XBOs 16 [2x8]), which GCN only got with more recent shipping versions. GCN 1.0 and GCN 1.1 Bonaire included 1 graphics command processor and 2 ACEs, while GCN 1.1 Hawaii and GCN 1.2 Tonga now include the 8.

So its sort of 360 Xenos-ish in that it borrows from generation pools. Funny how they flipped, where RSX was based on older tech.

Does anyone have a list of all the rumors that came from sources that said Nintendo was going to announce something related to the NX in mid April?

We can throw those to the trash in a couple of days

I believe the PS4 also has cache customization around async compute, which didn't come around on PC until the HUMA compatible GCN APUs.

In any case, I don't know why Sony would throw it out unless the PS4K is dependent on them striking gold with VR and needing beefier hardware down the road.

I have been asking some people about Hype Train being banned? No one wouldn't able to provide the quote or post from the moderators. Honestly, I don't think Hype Train GIFs are banned. Just the concept where people bombed the threads with a lot of requests to get their avatars on Hype Train. I think there is a good way to do Hype Train which is person is willing to take a look at all pages and save their avatars to include their avatars on the train. I know some people would be soured about it but it's their faults for not participating in the thread.

Edited: It would be awful nice if moderator would clarifying something on that.

Even if that is the case it's still exciting in the sense that they would be on the latest architecture and hardware, which would only benefit performance.

If Nintendo wants to hit a certain power consumption and performance level, I can see them using 14nm. That doesn't mean it has to be a 3TFLOPS GPU or anything that crazy.

With rumors of 14nm, it makes me more hopeful for what they want the whole "family" to be.

I believe most leaks/rumors have come from western sources. Since western devs don't really care about handheld gaming, I'd imagine all info on the handheld is locked down in Japan. And NDAs, of course.
