Well, that was nostalgic. Basically just a redo so the original episode 1.

Other than the bad CGI transformation, it was pretty good.

I do not like Mamoru's new voice. So monotone and bored...

Luna's new voice is fine.

I just finished it and it was ok.

I have watched the original way too many times so I couldn't help but compare them in my mind :S

The new Youma design looked bad, the original was far more sinister and scary (the whole battle was pretty lame, actually) Sometimes the drawing was very not good either. I liked most of the redesigns though with the exception of Motoki. His face looked weird.

And I feel super old, I was like 10 years old when I started watching the anime and now I'm doubling Usagi's age ;___;

The battle sucked in the original too, honestly 90% of the fights in the original Sailor Moon anime are bad

You can really tell it was made on a budget, with Tuxedo Crooked Mask and Botoxed Luna, but it's entertaining enough, and they didn't make the typical reboot mistake of taking a completely different premise and trying to wrap it around an old IP

And yeah, SM is not what you watch if you want to see magical combat. It's primarily a romantic show, which showing little girls getting beaten up is not. You have Pretty Cure for that.

I disagree, Season 3, 4, early 5, and especially Season 2 had some of my favourite action ever.

Early on it's pretty bad though, especially when it is just Usagi solo.

Eh Pretty Cure has been slacking so hard lately.
In all departments.

Bun-head? What happened to meaball-head?

In Volume 1 of the manga it explains in the bit at the end that they used "bun head" because he says "dango" which could be translated to "dumpling" but the translators thought "bun" would be more suitable for the western world, so I'm guessing the anime translators used the manga. He also called her "bump head" in the manga.

In fact, besides the changes to the dream and the fact she doesn't transform with a mask on, and she doesn't swoon over Tuxedo Mask (love heart eyes) after he disappears, it's exactly the same as the manga.

Plays in with the "rabbit on the moon" thing too.

Just saw the first episode, it was..okay. There are a lot of still shots and some of the faces/expressions look off. I enjoyed it but I should have know from the first trailer that this remake was going to be done on a tight budget.

I wish they went with "bun-head" at least... The double-meaning works for both cultures!

New voices were great!! I need more, but it'll take a whole year to get through 26 eps... Why did they choice the biweekly route?!

Oh, and I wonder if they will all wear 90's clothes or present-day ones for when they aren't wearing school uniforms...

Just watched the episode: was terribly bored.

But then I remembered that when the original anime was airing in the US I wasn't impressed by the first episode either. I wasn't hopelessly hooked until Sailor Mercury and Sailor Mars were introduced. So I'm willing to wait until then until I give an official opinion.

The quality of the animation was better than I was especting...still not top quality, though.

If they went weekly, they would cover almost the entire series in one year.

They stated that fashion and technology would be updated for present-day.

Also, this version is targeted towards adult women who grew up on the series.

Of course Sailor Moon is not Dragon Ball but I thought most of the fight scenes during the series were alright. They were basic but not that bad.

And yes I guess comparing the two fights is a case of comparing shit to diarrhea but at least the youma in the original did more than just stand there looking lame.

Iconic.

Well, yeah I knew about their target audience. All of their merch coming out have been blind boxed figures, Figuarts figures, and cosmetics, mainly.

Did they say the 26 eps would cover the R portion or the entire series as well, or is just doing classic? I mean, there's still plenty of manga to get through and there's no way that 26 eps would cover the entire manga. I'm aware that the manga kept going and although had set arcs, it wasn't split up with the different volumes or anything. I'd say 2 years tops to get through the entire series.

Oh and nice that everything would be more present-day. I did notice that the arcades looked a bit more modern.

Watched it and wasn't very impressed at all. If I had one word to describe it, it would be: soulless.

Outside of the backgrounds - which looked nice - the animation was extremely poor (marred by unnecessary CG as well) and the music largely uninspiring. I don't care for either OP/ED theme and the rest of it was super bland - including the VA work. Might just let it air in full and then skip around through it once it finishes but so far I'm more interested in going back and watching the original.

Don't worry,
pretty much no youma after the next episode anyway.

I fall into this category and I think they did a horrible job appealing to that sort of nostalgia.

The TBC card certainly hints toward doing the Dark Moon arc. There were only 60 chapters of the manga though (granted, some are extra long), so they really could tackle the entire series in a year and a half if they wanted to (edit: if they had gone weekly).

Liked the first episode, I have no issues with the animation but the soundtrack, oh god why?. The old opening, the transformation song, the generic background music, maybe is the nostalgia talking but I dont like what they have done.

I guess it remains to be seen how common this sentiment is.

The only two people I know who watched it so far (one of whom is an adult woman who grew up reading the manga) loved the first episode of the new series, to put an anecdote out there.

Nicovideo livestream had 80% approval rating for the first episode if that's telling anything.

I never got into the original anime past the first run of the dub (watching it on Hulu now is grating as fuck) and went full-on manga back in the day. This version is definitely appealing to me.

It was okay, I guess. What I enjoyed most about it was the art displayed during the eyecatches. Very wallpaper-worthy. I don't think I'm going to bother continuing since Bi-weekly is a terrible pace for a series like this to have.

They're using a composer that mostly worked on newer seasons of Precure in the past.

I loved it... But then again I'm apparently a rarity who enjoys well-done adaptations without looking in with nostalgia goggles. I also enjoy new Pokemon. I'm open to these things.

The only "childhood ruiners" is when they do a terrible job at something, and not something different. See: Dragonball movie and Bayformers. Plagued with terrible acting and/or terrible story/dialogue. These are just different. Like comparing Breaking Bad to Metastasis. It's a spot-on adaptation, despite different actors and slight tweaks for cultural differences. Some people will still not like it cause it's different.

Given that there's about 26 chapters in total from the start to the end of R and we seem to just about be covering a chapter an episode, I wouldn't be supprised if this is going to do the JoJo's Phantom Blood / Battle Tendency Route. Plus that Rod in the To Be Continue card is her upgraded wand from R so we might have Pillar Men yet!
Neo Queen Serenity in the endcard probably indicates Crystal's run will go at least up to Black Moon. Then they can start thinking about the second season.
Episode 2 seems to be chapter 2 of the manga, so don't expect significant plot expansions.
It's interesting to note that while the old anime has the "R" label for the arc after the Dark Kingdom, the manga has no such designation. Those start with "Infinity", which corresponds with S in the old anime.

Furthermore, "Crystal" would remain an appropriate title for the second arc.

We'll see, though.

So, I'm not the only one who though that the Black Moon arc might show up? Woo!

I was shocked at how bad the animation during the OP song was. The originals were quite a bit better.

I thoroughly enjoyed Sailor Moon Crystal; I was scared that Toei Animation would screw up somehow but they captured the essence of what made Sailor Moon enjoyable when I was a toddler. Nevertheless, Toei Animation are some cheap motherfuckers. This is Sailor Moon were speaking of and the idea of only spending 100k per episode needn't to be applied for the franchise.

Toei's cheapness reaches no greater bounds than their recent Dragon Ball work. Kai was their 20th anniversary celebration, and it was just a re-cut of 20 year old footage with some scenes re-animated as cheaply as possible. Battle of Gods was the the big theatrical film that looks no better than an average TV episode for some shows. Shit sucks.
