Toei's cheapness reaches no greater bounds than their recent Dragon Ball work. Kai was their 20th anniversary celebration, and it was just a re-cut of 20 year old footage with some scenes re-animated as cheaply as possible. Battle of Gods was the the big theatrical film that looks no better than an average TV episode for some shows. Shit sucks.

Toei has always been pretty lazy.

Few things I noticed during the second watch (with the manga open)

- that extra scene with Jadeite was probably fanservice
- they added the line about Usagi's heart pounding after meeting Mamoru
- Motoki was supposed to be in the dream with Luna
- she does use the hair pieces to hear Naru in the manga, but the goggles were supposed to show her after that
- she didn't say "I will punish you" in this chapter
- they changed the youma's line from "kill her". Didn't comment on the youma turning to dust either

Could of been worse.

Could of been Studio Pierrot.

Someone should eventually do a count of how many times Man Puncher has been avatar quoted over the years. It's already been done like 4 times in this thread alone, but I've seen it happen in other threads before, too.

Just watched it and.. I LOVE IT. Music aside (still dislike the OP and goddamn, what awful ED) is what i always wanted, the manga style animated.

Will eagerly anticipate the next episode, but no at fucking 4am ¬¬

This certainly exceeded my expectations. I went in expecting it to be horrible, but it looks much better than the trailer elt on, tbh.

Love the new opening also <3

I don't know anything about Sailor Moon but I liked this first episode. (Down the line I'll have to ask all the hardened vets in this thread about what's different and such. I'm interested in if this is a "good" adaptation.)

True. If Crystal does adapt up to Black Moon then I'll compare it to Sailor Moon Classic & R.

Also, FMA 2009 is my pick

Thoughts on episode 1.

Yeah that's Sailor Moon alright. I'd know it anywhere.

- Tsukino Usagi
- Tsuki no Usagi
- Moon Rabbit

Huh I didn't realise the Sailor Moon names were puns.

All of them are. 'Mizuno' - water, for instance. 'Aino''s an easy one.

The 3D transform sequence was really jarring.

Overall I really missed the goofball nature of the original in this - it's just less emotive in how it conveys the characters. And the really funny bits from the original episode 1 are not there, so...

I dunno. JJBA took a while to get going, and this is another "extremely well known manga gets a properly faithful adaption" case, so it'll take a few more episodes for it to come together as either okay or actually really good. It has potential.

Oh it gets better. All last names are based on the Japanese names for each celestial body.

月 Tsuki/Moon -> 月野 Tsukino (Moon field, but "no" can mean "of" in Japanese as well.)
地球 Chikyuu/Earth -> 地場 Chiba
水星 Suisei/Mercury (water) -> 水野 Mizuno
火星 Kasei/Mars (fire) -> 火野 Hino
木星 Mokusei/Jupiter (wood) -> 木野 Kino
土星 Dosei/Saturn (soil) -> 土萠 Tomoe
天王星 Ten'ousei/Uranus (sky lord) -> 天王 Ten'ou
海王星 Kaiousei/Neptune (sea lord) -> 海王 Kaiou
冥王星 Meiousei/Pluto (underworld lord) -> 冥王 Meiou

Sailor Venus is the odd one out since her last name is from 愛 Ai/love not 金星 Kinsei/Venus (gold/metal). The elements involved in each name also carry over to the powers of each character. This is why Jupiter has plant references in her attacks, as her element is supposed to be wood.

Also of note, the Japanese week follows the Latin week: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn. Our week is a nordic adaptation of this, but we got lazy with "Saturday".

For better or worse it seemed very faithful to the manga.
And I've never seen the original anime. Soooo I'm along for the ride.

Looking forward to it. Actually, I'm not planning to watch the series as it airs. Watching the first episode was an irregularity for me.

Yet it is still written like a series for children.

The original manga was targeted toward younger readers.

That episode was AWESOME!

So, it's true that it'll be aired bi-weekly? But I also read somewhere that the next episode is in 2 weeks :(

I love how it's all moving slightly faster than the original, at least that's the feeling I got. Especially with
that many mentions of Venus.

And that Usagi remark about Mamoru wearing a tuxedo in broad daylight was hilarious.

I actually finished reading the manga not too long ago.

Liked the first episode. I was worried they'd make things more serious so it's nice to see the humor intact.

Sailor Moon Crystal 1

eh, no real complaints here. will remain cautiously optimistic

It's not like this supplants the original and as the recent JoJo series shows, it's not always bad to have a more faithful adaptation.

Of course the story is the same. How would they rewrite it to target adults better? Add yaoi? Not sure what kind of changes you were looking for...

I'm talking about how the material is presented, the exposition in particular. (Not that series aimed at adults are free of clunky exposition.) I know the intent is a closer adaptation but I think they have gone too far. Alas, it's only one episode but I think the series is off on the wrong foot.

I watched this earlier today. I thought the art was really nice, but the music was a little weird. I'm watching the OG Sailor Moon episodes as well so I'm used to that type of music.

I'm gonna miss hearing ♪Sailor Moon♪ during the transformation. D':

After watching it a couple of times I really like the new opening. Though that spin at the end seems unnecessary.

I hate hate HATE usagi's voice (to young sounding, cartoony sounding, grates on my ears and gives me a headache, I wish they had recasted her like most of the other characters) aside from that the episode was a good start

I thought it was just... middle of the road to be frank. I know that there are certain beats that must be hit when recalling ol' meatball dumpling bump head's origin, but I had a bit of hope that they'd update the source material a bit. (As folks have said earlier, jewels controlling women doesn't really fly well in 2014.) Nevertheless, for a straight-up adaptation it was decent. The music didn't really seem that noteworthy and the animation (again, as others have said) is all over the place. I get that Toei gonna Toei, but I'd figure they'd spend a little bit more work getting a legend ready for prime-time (...internet, I guess. They couldn't even air this on TV? With a note about the biweekly release schedule?)

Maybe I built it up in my head to be something different than what the series is, I dunno.

:p I know I'll have to accept that this won't be what I wanted it to be.

What the heck were you expecting? It was either going to be an HD redo of the old series or an HD adaptation of the manga, either way this first episode was going to play out almost identically to this. Unless you wanted like a completely original story which you weren't going to get ever

And what the hell is this "women controlled by jewelry doesn't work in 2014" did I miss a memo where women didn't care about jewelry anymore? Or should the series have thrown a few guys in there with ear rings to make it PC?

The tone of the show has definitely lost its goofy edge. :(
Yeah, this is definitely going to be the case. While the manga does have some silly moments, the old anime was much much more of a comedic take on the concept and spent far more time just letting the characters interact and engage in goofy antics. The manga is all plotplotplot by comparison.

You're gonna have to explain it because some of us just don't see it.

Plot-wise it directly ties into what Sailor V and Tuxedo Kamen have been involved with.

I think it's just the mere fact that a group of women were very excited about expensive jewelry being heavily discounted. You know, as most women in real life who care a lot of jewelry would be. Moreover, the scene in the store was still heavily toned down from the original anime's larger group of women, alongside some larger woman shoving Usagi out of the way to get some earrings or something (this could be the effect of being more faithful to the manga though).

Either way I don't see it as an issue at all.

That's a bit of a shame. I hope there's some more fun moments upcoming.
One thing I miss is Tuxedo Mask's theme used to play when he "intervened", but not anymore. :(

Would you say Nolan's Batman is better or Burton's?

I actually like both, for different reasons. It's all about the tone you set for a film/show that creates expectations for characters, I suppose.

Maybe my expectations were set wrongly. I still think it detracts from the show that it doesn't have funny animation elements anymore though.

I'm a huge fan of cheesy movies and ridiculous sequences, so I think maybe I was wrongly influenced. lol

Aren't all of those in-between frames? It's like those Naruto episodes that are so polarizing.
