Salt & Sanctuary (Ska studios, 2d Souls-like) releasing on PS4 March 15

I'd grab on PS4 but I have too much to play right now. Thinking of grabbing it when it comes to PC in the future unless there's a good sale on PSN.

I'm already working on 3 games at the moment... I am torn between picking up this, or Senran Kagura Estival Versus this Tuesday. Ether way, my rabbit hole will only get deeper.

So many releases right now and upcoming. The Division is sucking up most of my time, but with Quantum Break and Dark Souls 3 coming up ugh. I still preordered this because I've been so hyped for it :P. Will probably double dip for PC/XB1 in the future too.

Debating whether or not to preorder this now...

for:
- it's cheaper if you preorder it
- impressions so far have been relatively good
- while I haven't played any of Ska's previous games, it seems like they're pretty good too, so they have pedigree

against:
- ASilentProtagonist's latest impressions concern me a little
- I don't want to buy something purely for the sake of holding my attention until DS3 comes out - am I going to want to play this after April 12th?
- it seems like it takes a liiiittle too much from the souls games from what I can tell
- I don't want another situation like LotF :P

What do I do?

I think the fact that you like Souls games means that if they took a lot from the series, that'd be a good thing.

You'll never really know until you play it so I suggest you buy it. I just did :D

We know it runs well, is lengthy, has 600+ items, different classes, customizability, you've seen the art, seen the gameplay. If it appeals to you, pull the trigger.

Beat it last night. I really wanted to love this game. Here' some of my many complaints.

  • The game is impressively long for an indie, but it feels far too long
  • Incoherent world design
  • Repetitive combat
  • Most enemies can be beaten by mashing fast attack with maybe a roll
  • The bosses are absolutely terrible. If their not insanely easy they're very cheap
  • The game just feels hard for the sake of being hard
  • Cheap Deaths with even some traps later that instantly kill you with noway to avoid them
  • The checkpoint system gets baaaaad
  • Inconsistent messy art

Game started out pretty well for the first 3-5 hours. It's shame that the quality in many places takes such a dip

It just feels unoriginal. Dark Souls series fanatics will cringe at how much it takes. Even the NPC's can be exact copies of the DS one in looks, and character. It also doesn't help that the story feels like they tried really hard to make it a philosophical dark game. It tries to even tell the Story in DS fashion with item descriptions, NPC's etc, but the Lore is very boring, uninteresting, incoherent.

If you're really wanting that DS fix a little early with Dark Souls 3 just a mere month away I say just wait
. Their is enough content here to justify the 18$ price tag, but the problem is that the content is poor.

I hate being the bearer of bad news, but i want to save some Gaffers money, and the pain of disappointment.

Further Impressions. This game is all over the place at this point. Some highs, and low low's sadly. Lots of big, and small problems that really build up.Things getting stale, and game is dragging quite a bit. Hopefully it gets better. Their are those occasional impressive moments. It's ripping off DS series so hard in so many ways other than gameplay. It's a bit shameless. It was acceptable at the start, but it's gotten ridiculous. Art direction is getting unoriginal, and inconsistent. I'll save my much more in depth thoughts until the end

It's getting more Metroidvania which I dig.

This game does have a lot of content. Very impressive how much SKA have created.

Keep your hype levels in check.
Just after I pre-order. FUUUUUUUUUUU

Welp, gonna hold off for now then until I hear more impressions and see more gameplay of the later areas then :S

I don't understand the complaints that it borrows heavy from DS, when that was the intent of the developers.

That's what I'm thinking lol it was always meant to be like this. Still hype since I know the type of product I'm getting. Plus, I'm familiar with Ska's games and art choices (which may turn off some) so no worries on my end.

I feel like a few of those complaints were things people said about Dark Souls. And the inconsistent art and environments don't bother me at all.

Still picking it up.

Only in SCEE region and before they take payment, and SCEE took payment this morning.

It's still possible to cancel and get a refund before Tuesday but it will require a call to customer services.

NOOOOOOO. I really don't want to have to go through a phone call for this. Goddamnit. Let the hype posts yesterday get to me....FUUUUU

Oh well, im sorry then. I still have hope for the game turning out quite good.

That's just one opinion though, no reason to panic. If you're familiar with the dishwasher and Charlie murder games you'll like it. Although the inspiration is very souls heavy which was their intent.

I'd say definitely wait for impressions. I have nothing but good feelings towards the developers as I've loved every game they have made and I'm not bothered by heavy borrowing of the Souls titles. The issue with repetitive combat could be also said for say Dishwasher, there's only a minimal amount of combos in each weapon and there are usually two weapons that are optimal for each situation so most people will stick with two-three or so.

Check the OT once it's out, myself and others will be playing it and will let you know how it is.

Don't let ONE negative impression color your decision, his complaints are extremely subjective and there's only one of them. Reviews should come out tomorrow I guess, wait for those at least you have a bigger pool to make a decision out of. If negative GAF posts were used to make decisions, nobody would buy Witcher 3 considering just how often people would make threads over how crap it is.

Haven't played any of their games. The Souls influence was what got me hyped. But man these complaints are rough. I don't mind ripping off DS. I mean it's why I preordered. But repetitive combat? Incoherent world? Bad bosses?

I dunno. I have no choice at this point.

This is true, put me in the camp that the combat is horrible ( I'm being nice) in tw3 great game nevertheless.

The art from Ska Studios is an acquired taste so that's a legitimate complaint. Each weapon has a set of combos like admiral said so it can give out that impression. Bosses idk since I haven't played the game, don't get so down on one opinion... If that's was the case I should skip FFXV for having action combat ;P

Again, it's one impression. At least wait until reviews start coming out. If you are seriously going to let one negative impression color your decision then you really shouldn't have preordered the game on Souls hype without impressions to begin with.

I'm someone who has played their titles and they've always been fun. I haven't played this obviously, but with the negative impression all it means is I'll wait for reviews.

So what's going to happen when a positive review comes in?

Thanks for all the impressions. I really wanted to get this since I want something to play before Dark Souls III comes out, but now am on the fence.

Good advice in this post. I will definitely check out impressions in the OT before buying.

Woof, if you stream I will watch!

|OT| Salty Tears, everywhere.

I am playing it, but I am still in the beginning.

Overall, it feels more like a 2D Metroidvania game than a 2D Souls game. From what I had of the combat so far, it doesn't have the depth to be compared to the Souls games. It's simplicity is something I would expect more from a 2D Castlevania title around the PS1/GBA era.

And just to be clear, so far, this game isn't in the same level as Castlevania SotN or AoS yet. I still have a lot more ground to cover before making it a call if this is a good game or not.

I've been watching delinquent muse on twitch playing early access of the game. She loves it! I've watched her kill two bosses, and won't watch anymore, but this stream has made me want the game and I will be getting it!

One bad review/opinion of a game doesn't scare me, I've learned to trust more in opinions of people who like games I like.
