Samsung Galaxy S III (new flagship Android phone from Samsung)

OneEightZero

aka ThreeOneFour
Does Cyanogen allow you to enable the software buttons and disable the hardware ones? If not, is there a decent rom that does?

I just got a Verizon S3 after switching from a 4S. First Android handset and haven't really followed the rooting scene too much- if I want the most vanilla, Nexus-like experience, which rom should I install?

Also, how soon is the S4 rumored for release? I got the S3 because Sprint finally released me from my contract and can return the S3, wait a few weeks if necessary, but not a few months. I got the S3 for $10 plus a $50 gift card so it might be worth it for me to just keep it.

Date of release is still unknown, but I think the unveiling is this coming Thursday. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

A pretty sweet ROM to install would be Carbon. It has a ton of features and is essentially based off of Cyanogenmod

I actually went with CM 10.1 and it's been quite good so far.

This may seem like a dumb question, but is there any way to get notifications/message previews to display on the lockscreen like in iOS? Looks like Jelly Bean doesn't default to show them.

All of the sudden tonight my wife's Gs3 stopped opening like half of her apps. She cant open the play store, Facebook and a few other things. She is constantly getting gapps has stopped errors. I tried clearing data and uninstalling updates but its still messed up. Any ideas? Shes running completely stock.

Dammit, dropped my phone and cracked my front screen (lens) up horribly. Completely shattered. Good thing is the actual LCD works fine and is spotless. Anyone know how easy it is to fix, or whether any where in the UK does it? Does Samsung UK have a repair service?

From what I understand, a pain in the arse to do yourself but you need to take it to a decent repair shop.

So what's the general consensus on the FoxHound Rom? I've not really heard much muttering about it on here and it's what I've got installed atm. Is there any reason why I should stick with it over CM or does CM have it beat in any aspects?

Sigh....fair enough. Guess I'll ring around tomorrow. Sucks. It wasn't even a high drop...lol.

Just days before I was intending to sell it off and buy an S4....
If you replace the entire screen all you have to do is transplant the main board, camera and a few other bits and it's pretty simple. I did mine in around half an hour, hasn't missed a beat since. Might end up a bit cheaper than paying a shop to do it. If they're willing to just replace the glass it will be a lot cheaper but I wouldn't attempt that myself.

ANyone know why this phone charges so slow sometimes? Sometime I'll leave it for an hour and battery is only gone up 15%. How long is it meant to take? I'm using the official charger that comes with the phone aswell.

Tried installing CM 10.1 M2 and the keyboard crashed every single time it tried to load (on vzw S3). Back to paranoid android for now until the next stable is out!

Go to the settings of the messaging app perhaps? Maybe enabling the quick reply and messing with those setting I'll do the trick

Mine was doing the same thing. I needed gapps for that rom. I got a old rom and newer gapps. Changed it and its working fine now.

So, what is the thinnest GS3 case I can get that provides a bit of grip for holding the phone?

I have owned a GS3 since release, but back in November switched to the iPhone 5. Thank all the gods I held on to my GS3, because I've switched back to Android (for good).

For those that have or have used the N4. Which would you prefer? I'm still on the S (lol) and I could grab the s3 for $300 or so.

I wanted to wait and get an S4 but the price difference looks like it'll be at least 2x of the s3 and I don't think the performance gain is worth that much.

I personally own this case. Before I switched to my extended battery, I loved this case, and it's cheap too.

You can enable software buttons, but I don't think you can disable the hardware buttons.

You sure can. First thing I did when I had an S3.

Just do a google search for "XDA disable capacitive buttons galaxy s3"

Some ROMs even have it under hardware options in settings.

I got recommended this case- has great reviews and I should have it by Wednesday (I'll post impressions):

Are you using the phone heavily while charging? I can usually get about 50% in an hour. Turning things off if you're not using it will help speed up the charge, as well.

Whelp just cracked mine all to hell.
From the very high point of 6 inches.
Ive dropped this thing 4 or 5 times from 4 feet onto concrete with not as much as a scratch.
Last night I'm laying down on carpet and dropped it about 6 inches and it spiderwebbed the bottom half.
Is the Amazon replacement glass the way to go?

Been really clumsy with my phone the past couple of days. Ended up dropping it twice from chest height in one day. Before that, I accidentally slammed it in my friend's car door when it slipped out my gym shorts' pocket. The only thing I'm sporting as far as protection is the zugadgets bumper I bought in conjunction with my extended battery. This damn bumper is a life saver.

I'm thinking about switching from iphone 4 to Galaxy S4 when that gets released, just curious for people who have the S3, is syncing music from itunes on a mac easy? Really the ease of itunes and podcasts on the iphone (well plus imessage syncing on my mac to a lesser extent) are the only things making me debate a switch.

I don't even have a smartphone, but I'm highly interested in this as well. I'm looking to get either an Iphone or a Galaxy (4?) later this summer, and music is the one thing I've worried about. I currently use a Zune (I know, I'm about 5 years late to every party, and it was a party that nobody went to in the first place), and my wife has an IPod (but she hates iTunes). I'm definitely leaning more toward the Galaxy for both of us, but what software do you use for syncing music?

Personally, as a former iPhone owner and iTunes Match user I uploaded all of my music to Google Music and just use the Google Music app (note: you get the ability to store up to 20,000 songs for free). Uploading is handled via a client application; it can detect an iTunes library or you can point it to a directory and have it automatically upload any new songs it finds there.

It's very much a case of "good enough" for me; the Google Music app supports my use case of a) wanting to have access to all of my music and choose some to store locally for plane rides etc. b) being able to rate songs, which are handled via a thumbs up/neutral/thumbs down -- obviously not as granular as the iTunes 5-star system.

Let us all fondly remember the Samsung Galaxy S III on the eve of its successor's debut. It was a good year with 40 million units sold. Tomorrow, the next chapter begins!

From my what I'm reading, I don't think it'll be a major revision- more like from 4->4S. Seems like they're waiting until the next cycle for major changes.

So my wife is running stock Touchwiz 4.1 on her S3, and she was asking me if there was any way to disable the hovering popup that displays when someone last called. It's this little info bubble that pops up over the call screen when receiving a call, and it usually has to be manually moved out of the way in order to use the dialpad during a call.

It's a minor annoyance to her, but to my surprise I couldn't find any way to turn that damn thing off. Is it possible?

Just wanted to know what people felt were the best headphones available that supported the Samsung standard for inline volume/pause/mic?

My stock headphones are dead in one ear and I need a replacement.

DietRob

i've been begging for over 5 years.
I don't watch hockey, I've never followed hockey, never searched for hockey on Google. So why the fuck does Google Now insist on showing me a card every single time the Vancouver Canucks play I am notified about it.

I've manually changed the settings several times removed the Canucks each time AND IT COMES BACK THE VERY NEXT TIME the Canucks take the ice.

I blame you Bishoptl.... somehow you are doing this to me. Taunting me with this now that I'm unjuniored from the email problem before. I blame you Bish.

I'm putting $100 on the Canucks winning it all this year. Google and Bish are trying to tell me something :p

I posted that in the NHL thread last night. Now I'm looking to figure out how to stop following the Canucks. Can anyone help me out here?

What are the "report from this device" and "location reporting" options in Maps and how do they differ from the other location options? I disabled it because Maps was a main drain on my battery but wasn't sure if any apps would still be able to sync location on command.

Considering making this my first smartphone. Opinions? The S4 would be a bit expensive for my taste.

Would use it for
- calls
- sms
- some apps (anki etc.)
- camera

It's a really great smartphone, best I've owned in years coming from a LG Optimus One. The camera is really good, not as good as the new phones coming out or the Nokia Lumia 920. Calls and SMS is really simple and good as most other phones. I have around 30 apps installed on my phone
