Samsung Galaxy S4 (new flagship Android phone from Samsung)

My Verizon rep has now screwed up my 2nd order in a row, and I've got a black unit coming my way instead of white. Totally bummed, but I dunno if I'll care enough to swap when it comes in.

Also, how is something in transit from Sunday-Wednesday 2 day shipping?

they only count 'business days' as days in that.. so if something ships on a friday and it arrives on a tuesday, it's still "2 day shipping"

Thank you greatly for the link. I am assuming I must root the phone beforehand, or is that included in this process?

I've never attempted to do such a thing, so excuse my ignorance.

yes, you need to be rooted before you start this.

Has anyone else found that since Talk got updated to Hangouts, it doesn't work anymore? Mine just bombs out every time saying it can't connect to Google.

That's the main FedEx hub. The good news is that when it leaves it moves fast. Only took 3 hours to get from there to NJ, apparently by plane due to the expedited shipping.

Well that's good. My delivery date is for tomorrow and I'm in NC so they still have plenty of time to meet that deadline.

(not that having to wait longer would be the end of the world...)

As with any online gadget purchase, this is the time when I frantically refresh the Fedex tracking info, trying to will the thing to get here a day sooner.

Yep yep. Mine has gone from Memphis to Greensboro NC over the past 3 hours. I should have it tomorrow.

So what are the chances that Verizon will have these in store this week? I want to keep my alltel plan and so in store seems like the only possibility.

I picked this bumper up today:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00BUIG6PE/?tag=neogaf0e-20

A little expensive, but I wanted it today and I also had a gift card from best buy (pm to amazon) + reward zone certs.

I also previously picked up the folio case (9 bucks after reward certs and price match). I really like that, but dislike that it doesn't really provide much protection.

The bumper adds a little thickness, but I would rather have the protection is provides.

Alright guys, I need some help. I like to plug my phone in over night sometimes and I've been noticing that my screen will be on when I wake up in the morning. Last night I woke up in the middle of the night at about 3AM and noticed the screen was on. I don't understand what's making it coming on and why it's staying on. There are no new notifications at all. Not even text messages. When I plug in the charger, I will hit the button on the side to lock and turn off the screen and set it on my night stand.

I've had wake lock detector downloaded for a while now but I just looked at it before starting to write this and it's only giving me the past hour and a half of data. That's not helping me figure this out at all. However, I might not be using it correctly. For full disclosure, I do have the keep screen app downloaded but I have that set for only a couple of apps that I don't want the screen to dim on.

Any ideas on how I can figure this out? Thanks in advance.

Two things are annoying me:

When I delete new emails, it grabs the equivalent number of older emails off the server, so I'm constantly getting email notifications for old mail.

Also, Swiftkey seems completely borked in the email app. If I'm writing an email, the cursor jumps all over the place amd I am forced to switch back to the stock keyboard, which really is no good.

Both things are very irritating.

I have problems with the former too, and I can't see to find any settings that allow me to change it otherwise.

Second day of VZW GS4 ownership, the first real test.

Woke up and took the phone off my charger around 6:50 AM, now at 47% battery life at 11:51 AM. 2.5 hours of screen on time. I may actually make it through most of my work day without a charge, which would be impressive...the job is definitely where my phone gets a workout.

Edit: Threw it on the charger at 2:20 PM, after hitting 15% and getting a warning. That was after plenty more abuse...I took a long drive between stores and tested Drive Mode the whole way, which keeps the screen on. An extended battery that isn't ridiculously huge might actually push me through an entire work day of heavy use. Zany.

Long set of bullet points with thoughts/impressions sitting in a Chrome tab on my desktop at home, will be adding to it and posting it this evening.

I don't even know why the carriers even try. There isn't a single phone bootloader that has remained un-cracked forever. Just sell the phones bootloader unlocked, you imbeciles!

I'd imagine it's like piracy, in that they know they can't make it impossible, but that they think they can make it hard enough that they can scare off casual users.

So should I let the battery deplete all the way before giving it it's first initial charge?

No, deplete it to no less than 5%. Running it down to dead is never a good idea.

Tried to post this from mobile but it wasn't working: the battery life so far is INSANE. It lasts me all day and I do pretty common web browsing, picture taking, and emulating. Not to mention I'm always connected to Wi-Fi and GPS. Jeeeeeeez.

Thanks, is it bad for the battery to keep it plugged in all night once I hit 5%? Should it be unplugged as soon as it's full?

the only thing you really need to worry about with modern cellphone batteries is this: don't turn the phone on again before charging it if the battery dies. everything else is handled by the charging circuitry.

Definitely keeping the "black" version. It actually more closely resembles the S3 Pebble Blue than the S3 Black thanks to the texturing.

Sexy, sexy screen!

I went ahead and bought the full retail version. even though I rarely if at ever go over 2gb a month, I couldn't seem to part away with my unlimited data plan. I figure in a little over a year it would pay itself out instead of the subsidy price + 5gb plan.

My iPhone did the same. Are you using GMail? Easiest way I found was to log into GMail from the web, go to All Mail, click the select all in the top left and then click the ribbon bar that says "select all in all mail" and then click mark as read. Fixed it.

Just sold my Iphone 5 and ordered this phone. Looking forward for something more fresh and newer. iOS was getting really stale for me and with Googles upcoming and already announced features I was sold. I know iOS 7 is probably looming and will be announced here in a couple weeks but I just don't see it being leaps and bounds better. My love for google maps and the new play music all access service is huge! I never knew I could upload my entire library to google and keep my phone free of those excess megs!

Can't wait to get this phone in the next couple of days.

So my screen has gone completely bonkers. Most of the time it looks like 90s cable scramble porn, but on my custom loader it looks perfect, and sometimes in text messages it displays perfectly. I did not drop my phone nor get it wet. I'll post a video of what is going on later - but needless to say it is rather fucked and I'm not even a month deep into my contract.

Year warranty, take it back to your carrier.

So, my thoughts after a day and a half with the VZW S4. Previous phone was a Galaxy Nexus, so lots of comparisons to that.

- I'm undecided on the back. The texturing on the battery cover of the Galaxy Nexus was probably what contributes to it looking so grody after a year of use, but the shiny slick plastic is a fingerprint magnet.

- Battery life seems leagues better, so far, not that you can do much worse than the GNex.

- The bundled charger is oddly bulky compared to the tiny model the GNex came with.

- I really, really like the option to re-notify on text messages in Samsung's app. This should be an option in stock JB.

- I don't like how you can't turn off the display of callback numbers in said texting app, though.

- The constant wifi notification in the notification bar is dumb, as is the lack of wifi on the customizable toggle bar.

- I haven't noticed any bothersome amount of latency just yet. Google Now/Search, a major source of slowdowns on my old GNex, works quick as a whip here. I have a bunch of stuff turned off though, most notably all the eye scrolling stuff and the hover stuff.

- I hate how every time you plug into the headphone jack, it turns the volume for media down and reminds you not to blast your ears out. I use the jack for AUX input on my car, so this is kind of obnoxious.

- The speaker is loud and sounds good for voice (calls and podcasts) but I'm not thrilled with the musical fidelity. I've heard much worse, though.

- Gimmicks I actually like: Quick glance (hover hand over sensor while phone lays flat to check time/status), air call accept (wave hand over phone back and forth to answer call) Voice Control - snooze (say snooze or stop to snooze or stop an alarm)

- The good parts of Driving Mode are really, really good. Unfortunately, that's pretty much only the texting part. The music portion won't manipulate Google Play Music, only Samsung's stock app. News is a joke and not at all listenable.

Overall, I'm a happy man. Root plus a couple of tweaks will make me an even happier man.

Can I just buy this phone off amazon for full price, pop my 4g sim out of my nexus and stick it in the S4. Will Verizon know I've changed devices?

Just missed the FedEx guy, so I'm picking it up at the center now. Place is a madhouse. Must be 30 identical boxes waiting to be picked up. I can't imagine what this place is like when an iPhone is released.

Took my phone to multiple Sprint stores. They said contact Samsung. This is just insane. The phone has been running hot since the day I got it. Its obvious the GPU burned out and now I have to jump through hoops to get my three week old phone replaced. Anyone reading this; go with the One. This is just ridiculous.
