Samuel L Jackson Throws Shade at ‘Manchester by the Sea'

Yes, preview screening. I thought it was a bad film and I was surprised at the caliber of the actors in it--they're not bad in it, but just the fact that they would all want to do a film like that. Of course I'm using "bad" as a relative term. It's just nowhere near Manchester by the Sea or Moonlight in quality.

I mean, it's not Oscar-worthy. It's just super saccharine holiday stuff. It tries to hard to be deep, when it's not. The person I was with liked it more than I did, but she also tends to like more cheesy holiday movies (which I'm not against, mind you).

Although I'm not even sure it's going for Oscar buzz--I think it's better to just market it toward the people who like sentimental stuff at the holidays. If that's its audience, it'll be ok. I think critics will agree with me, but I wouldn't be surprised if certain audiences go see it, given the names that are in it.

Thank you, about what I expected. So it basically is the way it looks and is being marketed. LOL

Totally agree on the collateral beauty flick. I keep seeing that trailer in theaters and I can't be any less interested.

Yeah, but after him going to bat for Tim Burton's racist rant, this statement is kind of eye rolly.

This came to mind as well. Sam is safe, he'll get casted by Burton, Tarantino, or whoever and defend their bullshit.

Manchester By The Sea totally reeks of oscar bait movieness. Moonlight, on the other hand, doesn't. It's a fantastic movie, and it being a black movie doesn't take anything away from it.

Manchester by the Sea isn't Oscar bait, but good lord it was boring. It's just people being sad for 135 minutes.

Nah. That's just a lack of empathy due to a scarcity of any life experiences to compare any of it to.

Incredible performances by Affleck and Williams.

Interspersed in between all of the scenes of people being sad were moments of levity between Casey Affleck's Lee and Lucas Hedges' Patrick usually involving Lee trying not to be a surrogate dad but grudgingly going along with it yelling all the while. And the occasional pull-apart brawl. There were at least 3 of those.

Hope I'm not the only person that thought the movie was thoroughly mediocre.

I can appreciate morose but Jesus Christ that shit is just so damn full of the most dour people on earth.

Only one character could be described as dour, and it would only fit for portions of the movie.

Moonlight's reception in the run up to the Oscars has been very strong. It's won as many if not more critical awards as Manchester. Ultimately I don't think any of the front runners this time around (Moonlight, Manchester or La La Land) can be considered 'Oscar bait'.

Yup get ready for dis

Y'all should've realized the Oscars were bullshit when they decided to all get together and do an Inarritu circle jerk for two years in a row
At least he didn't win Best Picture two years in a row.
I give Lubezki more credit for that run than I give Iñárritu.

An old school style musical about trying to make it in Hollywood and falling in love isn't considered oscar bait??

Musicals usually have had a hard time winning Oscars in the past few decades. I'll admit the subject matter does lend itself well to the Academy's tastes.

La La Land is exactly the type of film that plays to the industry people voting in these Awards. At the very least, it will be one of this year's front runners.

Also, what musicals have been snubbed in the past couple of decades? Chicago won. Les Miserables got more recognition than I thought it deserved. Moulin Rouge lost to A Beautiful Mind, but I'd argue that Fellowship of the Ring was the bigger snub (which is probably why the Academy went all out on the weaker Return of the King). I suppose that you could argue that Dreamgirls was worthy of at least a best picture nomination. I don't really think the rest of the more notable post-2000 musicals were really worthy of consideration.

People just need to fucking take movies for what they are. Yes, Hollywood in general has representation issues and that and movements like Oscars So White are completely valid, but that shouldn't detract from the work that is put out. The color of the actors' skin doesn't suddenly mean the movie is less inclusive, that's insanity. Both of these movies were incredible and had messages that should be heard by people of all backgrounds.

Despite not getting a Best Picture nom, Dreamgirls did get nominated for 5 Academy Awards and won 2.

I already admitted that La La Land is a frontrunner and its subject matter appeals to the academy. I said it's not Oscar bait as it belongs to a genre which has not been successful in winning in the past decade or so. You said it yourself. Only Chicago won, which is what I was referring to.

In general, I agree with the point Jackson is making. The Academy tends to gravitate towards certain types of films. Moonlight has surprisingly gained a lot of traction in the awards circuit and has had an overwhelmingly positive critical reception so I hope it gets its deserved win.

I'm not saying the movie wasn't realistic or well acted, it's just boring and depressing.

That... Um.

Collateral Beauty looks like shit

''I am trying to fix my mind'' The way he says is just downright comical

It would have been so much better had they not made it fantastical. I don't need "A Christmas Carol for my dead kid".
