Pretty much. Specially if they are too on the nose about it. Sorry I don't share your enthusiasm for the said film. Not like it was marketed for me, I rarely watch movies in the cinema.

It's not even just about this film anymore. It's ridiculous to me that you'd react so negatively to someone who contributed to something saying it's good. That's so incredibly cynical.

I've still yet to see either Manchester or Moonlight but of the two trailers Moonlight is the far away winner but again I need to see them.

Manchester by the Sea has a lot of groundswell around here tho. I may bump it up in my list to see.

Well Fuck. I guess I can't relate to Moonlight or Manchester by the Sea because I'm not a sad white man nor a sad black man! Guess I'll have to wait for a sad Asian man film to finally relate to other humans.

Both films are full of relateable complex human beings that I could relate to. And I'm not a 'middle class white guy who doesn't have to do the hustle'. For fucks sake. And what do sucidal rates have to do with it?? Women tend to be more sucidal, so they must be more privilaged! SMH

To be fair, Manchester By The Sea is a film that speaks to a VERY specific demographic (sad white dudes) - and film critics are a part of that demo. Predictably, they're smitten with it. I liked it a lot - unsurprising, because I am a sad white dude. I can't blame anyone for not really feeling it, though.

I don't know how the fuck you sat through that movie and left thinking it only applies to white men. Honestly baffling. Are you sure you watched the right movie? Regret, mourning, and unspeakable tragedy are not things that only apply to white men.

I wish Black celebrities would stop giving so much credibility to the Oscars, they snubbed Denzel for Malcolm X, rewarded him for playing an over the top goon of a cop in Training Day, and rewarded Halle Berry for playing a messy whore. That and other dubious selections tell us exactly the kind of content and performances those voters want from our Black actors.

Oscar did that to most of the white winners though. Want to award Scorsese for his life time of contribution in film? Got to wait till he made his worst and less original movie to award him.

He is right on collateral beauty being Oscar bait garbage.

He is right on white movies being considered proper award worthy and mainstream while black movies get ignored.

You should scope out After the Storm. Love me some Hirokazu Koreeda.

He's right. Oscar bait movies are so boring most of the time. The last best picture winner that I've seen was Slumdog Millionaire and that was 8 years ago.

Argo, Birdman, and Spotlight are all very accessible, engaging films that wouldn't be considered "critic bait" and I would say around half, maybe a little more, of the nominees would fit in the same category. I'm not saying oscar bait movies don't exist--I'm just saying you're writing off stuff you'd probably like unnecessarily.

I may be alone in this but I absolutely detested Birdman, thought it was a giant smug / pretentious Hollywood circle jerk of how brave actors can be and how the public is stupid for loving cheap entertainment and not "art". I did enjoy Whiplash though, I think that was probably the only big Oscar winner I enjoyed of the past 2-3 years.

Birdman is the definition of Oscar Bait, as someone else stated it was basically an actor's circle jerk of a movie. Which is exactly why it was so favored by the Academy which is overly comprised of actors.

I don't think it's exclusively appealing to white men, it just speaks to that demographic more so than others.
