Samurai Showdown vs Guilty Gear

Now I expect a fair bit of 'starving for cred cries' for Samurai Showdown 2 but lets try and be honest with ourselves. GGXX #Reload is the best 2D weapon fighter ever.

Samurai Shodown II remains my all-time favorite. But I'd take Last Blade and Soul Calibur (if 3D games are being counted here) over Guilty Gear anyway.

However, the coolest 2D fighting game to make use of weapons was Ninja Master's. You could actually equip/unequip your weapon during the match, and characters had different combo strings for weapon/non-weapon fighting. It's an excellent game that still plays well, and I urge anyone who never played it to track it down. (it was on the Neo-Geo)

Ninja Master's was developed by ADK, makers of the World Heroes series, and the game played SO much better than any WH game ever did. Too bad it wasn't popular enough to spawn a sequel or get the characters into Neo-Geo Battle Colluseum.

Both Guilty Gear and Last Blade aren't really "weapons-based" fighters anyway, but rather "fighters-with-weapons." Not all the characters have weapons, and they don't affect the game play; you can't lose your weapon or anything like that. It's like having Street Fighter II with a cast entirely of Vega clones or KOF/Fatal Fury with Bill Kane only.

I do like SSV Special, but GG #Reload is the better-playing fighting game. It's just that I prefer SS' designs and atmosphere over GGs, and SSV Special is definitely better than GG Isuka. :P

GG X2 #Reload. It always tears me up to pick it or Third Strike as the best 2D fighter ever. GG X2 is disturbingly deep and totally spanks the painfully orthodox Shodown series.

I played the first guilty gear that came out for ps2 due to this board actually.

It was a rancid pile of shit, all it had going for it was nice high res visuals.

I never played reload however i'd have to give it a try.

Samurai Showdown gets my vote. Guilty Gear is good, but the gameplay is a lil too bwashaka, and the characters don't have much personality in my opinion. When you get cut in Samurai Showdown, you feel it. Plus flutes own buttrock.

SamSho 2 = Last Blade 2 >> GGXX

I love all these games, but SamSho and Last Blade take it in my opinion. I just have more fun playing those games. Could I go into deep discusssion about every little play mechanic about each fighter and contrast and compare? No. Having fun though? Genjuro >>>>>> *

Is GGXX that much better than X? I thought GGX was crap. :P

I've tried Weaponlord once. It is quite literally unplayable.

Hey kids: ARCADES ARE DEAD. You can let your Vaseline-caked memories GO.

GG was crap. GGX was less crap, but still crap. GGX2 was awesome. GGX2#r is awesome plus.

You get teh prize

Plus while SS might not share the same depth of gameplay as the GG games (where in SS, matches can often be decided by how quickly you or the guy you're playing can hit C or A+B three times with some characters), it's more satisfying to play, especially for things like killing moves and setting up traps on people

I prefer the pacing of SS2. GGX# is more like Capcom Vs. games in pace.

According to you.

Everyone is entitled to preference. Furthermore, considering that SSII is over a decade old, speaks volumes IMO.

It's been so long and I never got to play enough of Samurari Showdown II to judge, so I'll go with GGXX.

Samurai Showdown has better characters though. It really pisses me off all the Vs games totally lack in SS and Darkstalker characters.

Actually I just got done playing a session of SamSho 2, Last Blade 2 and GGXX #R in honor of this thread, all in the comfort of my own home on their respective consoles.

MEMORRRRRRIESSSSS

I think they are both excellent games but to be honest I'd give guilty gear the nod thanks to its high res sprites. Give me a sam sho with 24 FPS 640X480 sprites and huge colorful backgrounds and it'd get the leg up , even if the gameplay was identical.

I loved going into a Tokyo arcade over the summer, and seeing all the GGXX #Reload machines empty and everyone playing KOF Neowave and HYPER STREET FIGHTER *II* instead. :D

You certainly can't say this about SS (what tournaments is it even played in?), but when it comes to 2D fighters, age isn't anything but a number. People are still seriously into Super Street Fighter II Turbo, which is now over a decade old.

Itz cool to like oldskool even if the mechanics are so dated it cant compare without the aid of nostalgia!

It's funny you say this, considering GG liberally takes parts of its game engine from Samurai Shodown, Last Blade, Darkstalkers, and KOF

doesn't GGXX have some guys involved from Samurai Showdown in the development team?

Nope, Arc System Works does have some former DarkStalkers guys though.

Too bad they fucked things with Isuka.
