It was a really funny episode of SNL, outside of a few rough spots...she almost fucked up the lip synch in the first song as well. At the end of the bridge, she came in a little early but caught herself.

They started paying the first back-up track on the second song...and the band went with it. She didn't really want to go with it. And thus the jig.

She probably did the dance to stall, but when she realized the voice track wasn't coming back on, she bolted. She could've tapped the mic and pretended it wasn't working, or just motion to stop the band and start over. Her handlers must not have installed her improv chip yet. :D

Here's the latest bit of dirt going around on the Ashlee Simpson Saturday Night Live Fiasco:

Here's the word from a friend of mine who was at the show, and got it straight from the director, beth mccarthy, who she was a guest of:

ashlee can't sing. she tried all day friday, but was whining to her voice coach. they decided to leave her mike on so she could sing along to the track, but after the first line or two of the first song, turned her off cause she was awful.

so, as of the first song, all the mikes were off.

now, they had the wrong song queued up for the second song, obviously. it really was the drummer's fault. apparently he was supposed to signal something or start in with some beat, and the one he did was for the first song. because he @#%$ up, the guy doing the tape hurried up and put the first song on, because that was what the drummer had signalled. when this got all @#%$ up, they did two things:

1. turned on all the mikes so the band could take over and start the real song. which they didn't. have no idea why.
2. turned off the tape so the band could play the real song.

they were going to turn on ashlee's mike so she could sing the real song, but decided not to because the band was just playing the first song. the guys were smiling cause they were simply thinking "what a @#%$ clusterfuck".

beth mccarthy was also the director of the superbowl halftime show last year, so she's no stranger to ... malfunctions.

Heh, so what, she can't sing because she's coming a smoker and partyer, or what? Or is her voice changing, because she's turning into a WOMAN? Hmm....the world may never know.

Why would the drummer signal for the song the band had already played?

Somebody explain that to me.

No kidding, that doesn't make any sense to me. They would have had to plan this performance for days. Everyone knew what song would be first and second, why put all the control in the hands of the drummer...it makes zero sense to me.

Well, not only that, but hadn't the guy just played the exact same song minutes ago?

Maybe the signal was for the guy to press play one the CD player. The Drummer got confused and signaled for "Pieces of me." Then he started to play the real second song. If you listen it sounds like the band is playing a different song, but when they realize that the Cd music is of "Pieces of me," they start playing that instead.

Why the fuck would the drummer be the one responsible to signal the guy in the booth controlling the audio? The tapes would have already been queued up and numbered. "It's the drummer's fault" What a retarded cop out excuse.

She can't sing, hands down, no excuses, she needs to lip sync, she sucks ass and cheats the parents of her little girl fans for spending the cash to see her shows.

Where's the lynch mob when ya call for one?

uhhm, "vocal guide" my ass. Que up her first performance, even before the 2nd time fuckup, and it sounds EXACTLY like her studio vocals from the album/video. Play'em side by side i bet they sound identical. She basically lipsync'd to her own album.

Damn, that's the best I've ever seen her.

That said, that Jude Law tile card they threw up on screen before they went to commercial was priceless. It had the perfect "WTF?" expression to cap that cluster.

:lol Exactly...that and the band playing on while smirking away is what cracked me up, far more then Ashlee's humiliation.

Someone already touched on this but - don't nearly all pop singers like her lip-synch 90+% of the time? I thought this was an accepted fact? Is it the case that as long as you don't get completely caught out, you're alright? But if you fuck up once, that's it, career over?

I mean, Britney Spears lip-synchs ALL THE TIME. I don't think I've ever seen her perform truly live. Sure, her career is going down the crapper, but it's for reasons other than her lip-synching..

I think the problem is getting caught. If you lip sync but no one can prove it then you can always deny it. But when something like this happens, you can't deny it anymore.

Haha, that's just too funny. Everyone knows these people lip-synch - I mean you can "catch them" simply by how the performance sounds, regardless of any obvious errors on their part. Seems a little unjust, but maybe stuff like this might deter people from lip-synching (ok, not likely, but one can live in hope).

I wondered if the mass media would even follow this story, and I'm pleasantly surprised to see they are. CNN yesterday, the local news this morning, NBC's Today Show; it's all over and they all have related Ashlee's comments, her agent's comments (daddy?), and the prevailing theory that the excuses are bogus.

Yeah, I'm surprised how much play this story is getting.

Not that I'm complaining. It's about time an artist (I use the term very loosely in Ashlee Simpson's case) get persecuted and shamed for lip-syncing. The music industry has been getting even more and more fake the last several years (if that's even possible). So it's great to see one of their puppets get exposed.

If she actually slaved away for years in a band playing in shit-holes trying to get a break, then this incident wouldn't have phased her. She just would have adjusted to the situation like the rest of the band did and she certainly wouldn't have blamed her band members afterward if she had any kind of history with them.

As others mentioned, I think the band should revolt and strike out on their own.

Well, this probably wouldn't be getting the coverage it is if it happened at a concert during the week.

But on a live national TV show, when news is slow on weekends anyways...BOOM! Insta-story! Just add reaction!

I dunno, but it was on VH1's Behind the Music milli vanilli episode. Funny thing is, Ashlee's reaction has both of theirs rolled into one. When the tape started repeating "Girl you know it's, Girl you know it's, Girl you know it's", the darker one started doing some headbanger dance thing while pointing the mic to the audience as if it was a crowd participation moment, while the lighter one(who eventually committed suicide) went off stage like Ashlee ended up doing.

Wow, I just saw that. I was watching SNL, but I'd muted the TV at that point. Wish I hadn't.

Damn hilarious. The aftermath video made it kinda sad to watch. Jude Law was nice about it though.

Lip-synching was born on TV out of necessity because some shows back in the day didn't have the capabilities, time or money to handle full blown live performances. I can still see Ozzy Ozbourne standing alone on stage during an episode of Solid Gold and lip-synching Bark at the Moon about 20 years ago. Hilarious. There was no controversy though, because when you went to an Ozzy concert, the music and singing was always live. The TV stuff was just extra promotion to make you aware of an album, single or tour.

As far as I know, people like Britney have made no bones about the fact that even her tour shows are lip-synched. So when she's on TV, you're more or less getting what she always does.

SNL though has a live in-house band, and is very capable of handling live performances. It was always perceived as a show were it's performers mostly played live. At least that was one of the things they sort of prided themselves in. Stuff like this makes you wonder how many other slickly produced top 40 goof balls got away with it on the show.

Apparently she has owned up - said she was so tired etc. her voice was wrecked. said something about "this won't have any big effect" or something..seemed like she was wishing her career away from failure out loud.

Again, if it was just a lip-synch deal, no one would care that much. The ownage really comes from her blasting the practice of lip synching in an interview just a week ago.

LM: What are your takes on lip-synching?

AS: I'm totally against it and offended by it. I'm going out to let my real talent show, not to just stand there and dance around. Personally, I'd never lip-synch. It's just not me.

It's very, very bad.

Her father is claiming they had the backup track because she was suffering from stomach problems. Good ol' stomach problems.

Let's hope her press people aren't the queasy type.

I don't see what the big deal is really. Are people saying that she was lip-synching to someone else's vocals, or that she was lip-synching to her own vocals? There's a world of difference between the two, and if the case in point were the latter (which I believe it is), then I think it's dumb that she's getting so much hate.

Maybe she was nervous and felt like she couldn't sing 100%, or maybe her voice was tired, etc, etc? Nowhere during the show does it say that the musical performances are live.

And anyone who's watched her show (yes i've seen a couple, so shaddup) would know that she can sing. In one ep it showed her practicing onstage before a performance, and another showed her having a recording session at the studio, and her voice sounds just like it does in the song.

Lip-synching to Pro Tools, or obviously being the product of too much massaging with that program and others like it is precisely what brought down the Spin Doctors.

Dude, I don't think Google News goes back quite that far. But there was a large disparity between what people heard live and what people heard on the CDs. They were a "studio band," in every sense of the term.

The big deal is that, when caught, she walked off stage. Then, she proceeded to blame her troubles on the band.
