I have the same feeling except exactly the opposite way, I thought I saw an average sony conference and I see tons of people gushing about how godlike it all was, like I don't even understand. I kinda understood it last year but this year? nah son.

Eh, I don't think anyone is comparing it to last years conference, but it was definitely solid. I'm seeing mostly negativity on gaf though, and very little of it seems to be based on anything other than "it's different".

My initial reaction was disappointment. Obviously we don't know what the game is going to actually be like until someone figures out the puzzle but from what I've played an un-scary P.T clone isn't doing much for me.

I'd say as of right now I'm just very conflicted on what this game may or may not be. I'm trying to hold off judging too much.

That's fair. I've yet to play the demo, but I feel like Capcom deserves to be given a proper chance with this new approach to the series. You'd think RE4 would have shown people that not only can RE mean more than traditional RE1 style controls/exploration, but to also not rush to conclusions when the series decides to change/reinvent itself.

Last year's show will be untoppable for a long time. However I went into the Sony show apathetic and came out excited. They made me interested in a game franchise I have negative attitudes towards. RE7 has me curious (though with guarded optimism). And I've got a fanboner for Kojima so just seeing him on stage has me excite. That said, I was pretty meh about the other conferences I caught.

Edit: And I forgot about the forth entry into the sadness franchise, Detroit. Despite knowing it'll be nowhere as great as it could be (like every David Cage game) it still has me buying the lies and hype. I wonder if they're going to do a channel LP or stream it live.

The Sony conference was huge because it was pretty much all gameplay from upcoming games. Kojima was the only one really allowed to get away with coming on stage and saying, "I have a thing, here's some inscrutable video and an indecipherable title with no indication of what it actually is."

They still have all the pie-in-the-sky (FF7R, Shenmue 3, etc.) stuff waiting in the wings, but this was the Year of Actual Games.

Edit: Pat's rival, the fire alarm, strikes again.

"Pat, you're a crazy weirdo and hating fire alarms makes you stupid."

...

"Pat, fire alarms are the fucking worst and your building should uninstall them."

Square enix managed to be even more boring than the pokemon nintendo presentation by having a 15 minute talk about a fucking box art

I'm almost hoping they're not having a podcast this week because there's too much content already for me to catch-up on. Anyone know if that's the case, or it's just being delayed?

Probably an LP, since that seems to be the thing to do with David Cage games.

This "Link should be a girl" thing is getting way out of hand.

It's been ridiculous from the start, but yeah, this is a new low.

Yeah, it's really annoying. Not every franchise needs a female protagonist, much like how not every franchise needs a male protagonist.

It's even worse than that though, the people who are getting upset aren't even asking for better female representation in games, they're asking for a gender swap of an existing character. It's absurd.

I don't mind the idea myself, and I can see why people would like that (though I honestly think just have Zelda being the main character would probably be better. And more kickass), but I also didn't expect it to happen with the upcoming game, and people who kept hyping themselves up (like those people who kept seeing a shoulder as a breast in the lanyard) only have themselves to blame.

That said, the whole "what do we do with Link if Zelda's the main character?" thing that they said is pretty dumb.

edit: Huh, I'm a member now. Yay!

Lol I'm watching the archive of the Nintendo Let's Watch, skipped ahead at the Pokemon seg and got confused when Nier Automata started playing. I legit thought for a moment it was a Nintendo exclusive and I had no idea lol

With probation lifted you can crap post with the rest of us!

Yay!

I'm catching up on all the streams that I missed over the past two days (GB first, then the Best Friends. I'm gonna be so sick of these conferences soon) and good lord Ubisoft's start was...about what I'd expect from Ubisoft, actually.

That isn't the problem, the problem is the bullshit explination as to why link can' be female. Also " not every franchise doesn't need a female protagonist " is a weird ass statement to begin with when most media on the planet don't have female protagonists.

You don't need to bring that up because most of them don't and that fucking problem,

Reading comments on Youtube videos of the RE7 trailer is mind-numbing.

People complaining that it looks like PT, or Outlast, and that it's not third person.

Nintendo owns the IP, they can do whatever the hell they want with it. If they want him to be a guy forever (or at least until someone decides to do a canon, female Link), that's their call.

I'm all for getting more female protagonists in games (although they need to be in games that do well, in order to avoid Paul Marketing saying they're a negative factor), but calling for gender swaps of existing characters isn't the right way to do it. The best case scenario will be that people like it, because it's good, but the worst case scenario, which is the one you need to plan for, is that you fuck it up hard and get a ton of negativity for your game.

It's harder to come up with something new instead of just tweaking something to fit your desires, and that's part of why people get annoyed by gender swapped characters in some franchises. Asking for the gender swap is a sign that you don't have an actual idea that can be built on, just a desire to have things your way and fuck the people who disagree, which results in the people asking for the gender swap getting no respect.

Respect must be earned, through good games with female protagonists, not by taking shortcuts that look like "progress," but are just bandaids that make people feel better.

Do you think the Zaibatsu will talk about how Teal'c is now the voice of Kratos in the podcast?

I expect them to be all over the place on this next podcast... so mayyybe? Though personally the voice didn't even really register to me because I was too caught off guard by my actually being interested in God of War.

Gotta love that
Casino Night Zone
music and Woolie
sitting with a Monopoly set
on his
lap.

Oh snap, an
FFXI character.

Also, I like how enduring "Yeah yeah yeah!" has been.

I mean, it does. I had a whole arguement with my friend last night about it.

Yes, but people talk about it like it's a bad thing.

Like, Outlast is a great survival horror game and people should be happy that RE is trying to be more scary. People who complain about that sound like they want another RE6, rather than a good game

RE6 is a good game. It's not a great game, since the level design holds it back, but the mechanics elevate it from a mediocre one, to a good, fun one.

Sorry, me saying "good game" was my opinion and not a valid argument.

What I meant to say was people seems upset at RE for trying something new, and trying to be better. The past 4(?) games have been over the shoulder shooters so you'd think people would be glad they're doing something different.

And even if this somehow sucks, RE2make is still happening.

I still seriously doubt the RE7 demo is indicative of the final game, just like I doubt Silent Hills was gonna be much like PT. It's a mood piece, while also being an ARG to get people interested and talking about it.

Mark my words, in RE7 you'll be fighting hordes of enemies and mutated helicopters.

I mean, remeber PTSD-rattled Chris in the RE5 ads and "No Hope Left" in RE6? Yeah...

I am hoping the VR/First Person thing pans out for them tho

Just put a gun in the demo. We already have an axe.

Just make RE7 on the same scale as RE1 with rednecks and ghosts.

Well a few have pointed out that there's a shotgun against a table in a trailer shot

Oh, not, yeah, absolutely. Lots of people hating on this before giving it a chance. I mean, I get why people wouldn't like it, I'm personally not enthused with the idea, and it certainly doesn't look or feel like RE. But it is a teaser demo. I'll reserve judgement when the final game comes out
and becomes a first person shooter

Catching up on Nier, and god I love Liam O'Brien, he's got such a good voice. Hell, thus far I love all of Nier's cast (they seem to be a lot of the Persona cast, so that's probably to be expected)

I felt the Sony conference was pretty solid, largely because of the great presentation. The classy orchestra/stage stuff, and there not being any real lows/stuff dragging down the pacing.

In hindsight I've cooled down a bit on it, as I'm not really sold on the games they showed. Re7 is a complete question mark for now, the Kojima game is almost certainly still at the concept stage, the Sony Bend game looked polished but unimaginative, Spiderman is kind of a boring overused superhero etc.

I was a fan of the game as soon as I learned my boy Jamieson Price voiced Nier lol. His voice is like thunder and I'd love to see him get more praise (and even more work).

Alright, fine. You know what? I'll watch the Twitch archive. Get off my back, alright? I'm doing it!

He really does deserve more work, I love having him pop up. He's a fairly regular guy in World of Warcraft and its always great hearing him. He has such a commanding voice (Admiral Taylor) but he can also ham it up excellently (everyone loves Jaraxxus and his flesh trombone and trifling gnomes, but I'm more fond of him as lovecraftian horror Yogg-Saron).
