This is something I should have added to my rambling post from a few pages back - MS is very much looking at their gaming portfolio and only releasing titles that can be monetized in perpetuity. In app purchases/ microtransactions , etc. Basically if they can't sell the equivalent of a team fortress 2 hat or push it as an e-sport , they don't want it.
This is why I don't think sea of thieves and crackdown are safe. The former probably got greenlit on the pretense they could sell it as minecraft but with pirates and the latter , they attempted to turn into a multiplayer only free to play mess that no one asked for. We also haven't see or heard about the game in a few years now which means either a lot of wasted money OR no money and a tiny team attempting to stitch together something resembling a game kind of like what happened with Just Cause 3.
So the question comes back - why even make a scorpio ? because MS did some focus testing and the metrics tell them that having the most powerful console will sell systems. If this is how little they care about quality software though... well I wish them the best of luck.
Kamiya: My games tend to go that way, so the core isn't in the plan from the start. We make the game with luck and inspiration, and if we work hard, at some point the God of Video Games descends upon us.
Iwata: Hmm... But the God of Video Games only shows up on weekends at the last minute.
Kamiya: Yeah! (laughs) I really should start thinking earlier on.
His company is about to ship a PS4 exclusive. I don't think he's above working with Sony anymore
So what does Microsoft have for 2017 now? Forza 7, Below, Cuphead, Sea of Thieves?
Nier Automata? His company is about to ship a PS4 exclusive. I don't think he's above working with Sony anymore
lol. Why would they say no to more work?Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. You think Platinum Games doesn't want to work with Sony.
MGSV cost 90 million to make? I don't have facts or anything, but I really can't believe this got anywhere close to that.
Maybe not 10x though, you right
Neither was Scalebound if PC enters the mix.Nier isn't PS exclusive
If there's something concrete why would I say "if rumors are to be believed" lol.
SE you mean?
Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. You think Platinum Games doesn't want to work with Sony.
Sadly after this,Kamiya will still refuse to throw his cards at Sony even if his company are in bad shape.
Throwing his cards at Ms and Nintendo last and this gen didn't work out for them.
Have you played the game ?
Its obsessively polished across 4 platforms, has extremely high production values ,and took a long ass time to make.
Yeah 90 million is probably an underestimation.
Nier isn't PS exclusive
Capcom was the reason why clover studios was shut down and Platinum games was established.
Platinum going back to Capcom would be a clover 2.0 situation not to mention they hate the higher ups for meddling and making bone headed decisions which is still true considering how badly Capcom is in shape this generation.
I can honestly say that if theres ever an opportunity, that makes sense for me or the studio, to work with Capcom again I would very much welcome that opportunity. Of all the publishers, not just Japanese publishers or partners, I can say with confidence that Capcom still holds a very, very special place in my heart and I love them dearly. Its one of my favourite companies.
Every publisher has cancelled projects for various reasons regardless if you're aware or not. Just because a project is cancelled doesn't mean either side had evil motives. I've worked on cancelled projects. Sorry to blow your mind, but it happens a lot more than you know.
Either way I hope we get more info on what went down. It's really hard seeing MS being the bad guy here after 2+ years of development, but then we have those tweets that could either be truth or half truths from disgruntled people on the project. I doubt it will take long for info to start spilling out.
They would but not Kamiya lol.Hahahahahahahahahahahaha. You think Platinum Games doesn't want to work with Sony.
Nier isn't PS exclusive
If it was halobound I'd actually want itThats the funny thing. That's going to get to live because of the words halo in the title. Should have named this Halobound and replaced Drew with Master Chief and it would still come out
Fair enough.
Tangentially, just a lot of piling on. I get the concern but I love the Xbox stable of games and I'm not the only one if sales are to be believed. There are millions of us. (Not dozens!) I see a lot of "Xbox Community is upset" but are we really? I'm sure there are a few that bought the One for this game and I'm sure a disproportionately large amount of them post on GAF, so it is to be expected, I suppose. Plus the people who are concern trolling, of course.
I guess I'm saying I don't really mind the direction MS is going because they continue to cater to my tastes. If this is what Microsoft getting out of the business feels like, keep it up. I'm very satisfied.
They would but not Kamiya lol.
Yeah, I feel like I'm missing something. Is there a reason why Kamiya wouldn't want to work with Sony? post-Capcom fallout or something? What are you talking about?
It's a slow month news-wise so this is basically the biggest news of the year. Also, Platinum Games is a GAF darling so there's a lot of attention on whatever happens to them.Holy fuck this thread is long.
I wasn't following this game closely. Why is this news such a big deal?
Platinum plans on releasing their own new IP by 2020. No idea who the publisher would be but they must've found someone since they said they made their first steps toward that new IP in 2016.Also who's left to even get platinum on the phone? It seems like their games don't sell super well so that is probably scaring some companies away, activision shut down their licensing branch, both SEGA and Capcom seems VERY unlikely.
Are they just gonna do stuff for Square?
Okay so you're an Xbox fan who is really upset that people are saying anything negative about MS because you're very happy with your console and the lineup? That's great. What does that have to do with a thread where a game from a celebrated developer has been cancelled? Nothing. You're happy, cool. Now unless you have something to add to this thread, I think you're done here?
To reiterate:
I don't understand how you think MS can have three high profile cancellations this gen when the competition had none and still think it's not MS's fault.
damn I can't believe this thread is over 116 pages long! it's almost like some people on neogaf care about the dev team that might lose their jobs over this...and want to figure out whos at fault here
Holy fuck this thread is long.

This is truly an unfair world.Kojima games make 10x as much as Kamiya games.
I feel like MS should've give Platinum abit more time.
Has Kamiya ever made a bad game?
Yeah, I feel like I'm missing something. Is there a reason why Kamiya wouldn't want to work with Sony? post-Capcom fallout or something?
There was no way for Microsoft to win in this situation..
It was either release a game with a terrible frame rate due to engine issues and deal with the negative reviews...
Or cancel the game and avoid the negative reviews but then take the heat for canceling the project.
Ultimately it seems like they made the right move.
Well, if we want to operate in the murky territory a little, Sony Santa Monica did cancel an unrevealed internal project led by Stig Asmussen at around the start of this generation. From the little we know of it, it was a huge money sink that missed several deadlines.
Remind of something else?

Well so far they just said Xbox One Version isn't "ruled out"
You know what I will happily eat crow If one day Hideki Kamiya himself comes out on a Sony conference announcing a Hideki Kamiya project exclusive on PlayStation.
