Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

Hey hey, let's not get crazy now. I mean sure Scalebound was the most anticipated xbox exclusive in that thread and was way ahead of games like shenmue III, gt sport, tekken 7, for honor, injustice 2 etc but we all know that everyone hated the game before today and is just in here because they wanted an excuse to badmouth MS.
Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking.

Carry on with the hate!

I don't blame MS. It was PG that was missing milestones, deadlines of the game after 4 years of development. Think of how much money wasted on a game that looked bad and missed development milestones. it is Kamiya that was a the director of the game and a game that he wanted to make for a long time. It's Kamiya's fault that the development of the game missed milestones and the game looked bad.

It's really weird how we're talking about Microsoft, who already have a history of forcing unrealistic deadlines and milestones on developers, and Platinum Games, who have made something like ten games successfully at this point, and people say "hey now this was actually probably Platinum's fault."

You could kind of tell from the gameplay videos released that this game was struggling. It looked convoluted and unsure of its own identity.

I have no idea that the cancellation of this particular game would cause a meltdown on GAF, haha.

It is Gaf and MS was involved in it, I didn't expect anything less. Actually, I thought the thread would of been much higher in post count by now with the hate for MS flowing so strongly.

How many third party devs are left working with Microsoft on exclusives now?

Right now, CA is finishing up Halo Wars 2, due out in the next few weeks. Theres also Reagent & the other team that is working on Crackdown 3. Capcom Vancouver dropped DR4, and I imagine MS will likely continue unless DR4 really underperforms at retail.

Other than that, there isn't anyone else left. A few of the more notable parties they could be working with, we already know they aren't.

Is there anything to the Ori 2 rumors, I wonder? Otherwise, yeah. That seems like about it.

Maybe the game was too ambitious for them?

Do you think if Sony canceled something like Gravity Rush 2 it would have less of a reaction?

"well-received critically (if not commercially)"

There's the key phrase - Microsoft isn't running a charity. If Platinum wants hands off from publishers, they need to sell to more than the NeoGAF audience.

But the point of moneyhatting a game from a developer like Platinum shouldn't even be to make a profit off of the game itself, it should be to sell XBones. Much like how a lot of Souls fans bought PS4s just for Bloodborne, there are a fair number of Platinum fans who would have bought XBones just to play Scalebound assuming it was the sort of game a Platinum fan would actually like.

Holy Hell GAF. I have a busy day and don't get online until 1130 and find a 130 page thread on Scalebound being cancelled. What a damn shame. I'm really shocked at this. Platinum always seem to be so efficient as a developer. They're smaller than say Naughty Dog and release like 3x the games. This is very disappointing :(.

Also, fuck Bayonetta 3 give me the Wonderful 102 with Kamiya as one of the main heroes.

When I first heard about the PG moneyhat, I thought about cultivating the Xbox ecosystem and broadening the lineup as the main goals of that title. I never thought of it as a AAA blockbuster-type partnership like Gears was. But, what do I know about it.

This game had been so long in development, what's year or maybe 1,5 years more for a dirty rich company like Microsoft every now and then, especially considering other questionable uses of that money? Sony & Nintendo do these occasional money losers because they know that even if they might not make all that much money on the projects or might even lose some money, it creates more value for their consoles and also good will among their loyal customers and can create a long line of platform enthusiasts
fanboys
who will stick with their consoles through times good and a bit worse.

They also marketed this game for years as a reason to get Xbox One. For a lot of people this game might've been one of the biggest reasons to get the console. As dumb as you will argue that it is to get consoles for unreleased games, some people do so and this really screws those people over.

Milestones set by Microsoft that have been implied to having been completely impossible in nature by people who have connections to Platinum Games.

If it came out it probably would have done about as well commercially as titles like Quantum Break & Alan Wake did, although it would have been a nice critical feather in their cap.

Honestly ever since 2011 I haven't been satisfied with Microsoft's effort in their exclusives and fostering first parties, and I've never felt like I was missing out not purchasing the One, and speculation that they're moving to long life cycle online oriented games kills my interest even more.

I was excited to see what Scalebound would turn into, though it never looked impressive to me in trailers. It's unfortunate that we won't see the completed game but is there any reason to jump to conclusions about who is at "fault" for the cancellation?

Now i can never be sure if MS will ever bring a new AAA IP to Xbox. Very Bad way to Start the year without any positive News. I Dont Need the same old shit every year for a scorpio

This kills me. To be perfectly frank, Scalebound never looked especially great in the demos they showed, but this is Hideki Ka-goddamn-miya we're talking about. The man is six for six on amazing video games; I honestly can't think of any other game devs with that kind of record. RE2, DMC, Viewtiful Joe, Okami, Bayonetta, W101; masterpieces, the lot of them. The guy deserves the benefit of the doubt.

Platinum is my favourite developer in the world, and I hate thinking about how this is going to affect them. It's already kind of a miracle when they get picked up for big budget contracts like this, knowing how poorly their games tend to sell; for a group of hired guns living contract to contract a high profile failure like this could be devastating. Ugh, think happy thoughts I guess. Maybe Sony will swoop in and save it. Maybe they'll take it to Kickstarter and it'll inexplicably be funded.

I have no idea. Never played the first game and never really looked at No. 2. It just seems odd that Scalebound is more popular amongst Gaf today with the announcement that it has been cancelled than all the 3 years we have known about it. You have to admit that there are people, many people posting just to shit post. They had no interest in Scalebound, No interest in Xbox and it is just a reason to bash MS. I mean, if you did not care for the game, the platform or the company funding the game, why all of sudden start posting when the game is cancelled?

As I said before: Scalebound is more popular on Gaf dead than when it was alive.

Not painting everyone with the same brush, but it is telling the post count in a thread like this versus any thread involving the game prior the cancellation announcement today...We now have 2-3 other threads that have spawned from this one.

Of course not, it's not like there was a 99 page thread about people having an issue with Sony about something that Sony never promised to begin with (4k bluray not being in the Pro).

This topic about a game that was pushed as a high profile exclusive and shown at multiple events, made by a beloved developer getting cancelled with news of shady shit possibly going down would never have been as big if Sony did it.

Sony isn't saving a Microsoft IP, and neither is Kickstarter. The closest you could hope for is a spiritual successor.

Would be awesome if Sony or Nintendo saved this game, but it won't happen. Sucks. I wasn't as high on it as many others, but it looked like it had promise.

Ahh that's a shame :(
Scalebound was one of the main reasons I was going to pick up a Xbone at some point.
Sure it had some negative buzz, but I don't pay much attention to that since it rarely matches my own experiences. Game looked pretty awesome imo

Hopefully the cancellation isn't too damaging to any of the parties involved.

There are always shit posters but if you believe that this thread has ballooned to 100 pages because of people feigning interest just to bash on Microsoft you're delusional.

Really dissappointed about this news! One of the few Xbox One games I was really looking forward to and the one that I was hoping could really show off the power of the so called scorpio! MS needs to stop self sabotaging the xbox division. It's almost a joke at this point! Let developers develop to their strength and stop trying to tie in monetary schemes into all the games! They are hurting themselves more than the competition could ever hope to. The strategy needs to shift! If first party devs are going to be locked into established franchises and new ips are a scarry proposition. They have to create a way where the xbox console won't be locked out of third party games like some japanese companies are doing. Open the system up! Put steam on it! Make pc games available for the xbox and vice versa! The scorpio should have the potential to handle that. Gamers are going to go where they feel they can get the most for their money and where the best games are at.

Actually yes, because Sony Japan would totally survive a cancellation and it is unlikely that Sony Japan would be fucked over by Sony in the same vein MS apparently screwed with Platinum(based on what insiders and reporters are hinting).

Also, Sony has a broader lineup of exclusives.

oh come off it. GAF is full of Platinum/Kamiya fans and you know it. Even if many people here ITT aren't fans of MS that doesn't mean they're glad to see this game cancelled.

Yeah, I can see Platinum making a game that's basically what they wanted Scalebound to be at some point- take the same base concept and file the serial numbers and shit MS almost certainly forced on it off. Would be amusing to see Sony fund it as an exclusive.

Since the game is owned by MS,thats not gonna happen

They'd have to completely make anew game with similar concepts
