Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

Seems like this thread is running in circles.

Did MS cancel because devs weren't delivering, or did the devs not deliver because MS was getting involved and making things worse?

I would love for MS to release as many games as possible. I wasn't all that interested in Scalebound but it seem many were. But, at the end of the day the semantics about what happen between MS and Platinum doesn't really matter. MS is the one paying for the games development. They could have finished the game and if MS took a look at it decided not to release it that's their decision. I guess I just don't have the same expectations that some folk have from theses companies. Game would have been forgotten about a month after release anyway just like every game is now days.

Enlight me, oh Great Enlighter, Why the hell did they mention dragons then? This is a clear jab. There's also picture description:

"We don't use finishing moves, on PS4, you'll be able to swing your blade to your heart's content!"

Because in the first game Drakengard.....you extinguished dragons.....

Huh, this is weird. Somehow this game managed to almost completely pass me by. I only read about offhand in the 2 years since it was announced and watched a trailer for the first time (the 2016 E3 demo) a few days ago. I didn't think it look very good, but to have it be cancelled less than a week after first laying eyes on it... Jeez.

Judging by comments? really? come on...

I mean the post itself says: "Nie zadajemy ciosów końcowych - na PS4 będziecie mogli ciachać mieczem do woli! ;)"

Which means: "We don't deal finishing strikes - on ps4 you will be able to swing your sword until you've had your fill. ;)"

Finishing strikes? Extinct dragons? Couple of hours after it got cancelled? For me it's a clear troll on this mess.

To the point that it was like 40% the reason I got an Xbox One ;_;

After MS fucked everyone over with the cancellation of True Fantasy Live Online, I knew NEVER to buy a console for a game that hasn't yet been released. Looks like MS is still up to the same old tactics of fucking over fans of Japanese games.

Add to that the picture, and for me it's a clear troll on this mess.

Are you reading past all the Dragengard posts?

Noooo!
Wasn't this Kamiya's dream project? MS should be ashamed of themselves if they shut this down. They could've delayed instead.

You mean besides the possibility that MS had unrealistic expectations and demands for the game, that ultimately caused the development issues, and cancellation? Yeah, besides that, it's not their fault at all.

Now im interested in those unrealistic expectations, i mean the game was pretty much sold as a openworld rpg with coop if i'm not mistaken.

If it is a troll then that is one of the most classless things you can do in a situation like this and the post should be removed. But I think it might be a stretch.

Judging by comments and the timing of the post (they didn't really market Nier earlier on their FB), it doesn't seem like it.

Dude. It's an enourmous stretch to connect this to Scalebound in any way. It might be unintentionally painful, but it certainly isn't a 'dig' at the game.

Because of Drakengard? You know, the series NieR spun from which has Dragons as a central theme

I'm more bummed by the fact that Platinum wasted time making this rather than something else than I am about Scalebound being cancelled.

Yeah, I really don't see MS saying make it bigger and such thus costing more money and time. Sounds like the dev bit off more then they could chew.

"When he'd decide" - ok, so they should just throw money into a pit forever?

There wasn't, every time it got shown it was like "Oh, that looks really bad" - suddenly because it's a chance to make MS sound bad? Now we've got 7600 posts about a game that likely has had less than half that total in every other mention of it combined.

You can't honestly think the hype for Horizon and Scalebound are even in the same league.

Yeah I mean...This thread is obviously about Scalebound, but the discussion has evolved into using Scalebound as a jumping off point to discuss different issues, because if this thread was only about "man I was hyped for Scalebound but now I'm sad it's gone" then this would have been a short ass thread that would have died off quickly.

Basically, don't confuse the activity of this thread with general hype for the game.

bah! we'd never have any fun if everyone thought like this! :) ...

don't even own an xbone, & i'm disappointed to hear this. &, yeah, i will refrain from playing the blame game until more info is available...

We would also never have a discussion, because we will never have the full story.

There's nothing wrong with forming an opinion based on what we know. These are two well-established companies with a history and a reputation.

Sad news. No idea what has happened behind the scenes but this seemed like a game that was coming along well. Was one of my most anticipated games of the year.

Microsoft's upcoming game lineup looks pretty bad right now, especially for people like myself that enjoy single player games more than MP games.

That's a nice Watsonian argument, but it makes no Doylist sense given how apart the franchises are. I wonder how many people on Facebook know of the connection.

A lot just according to this thread, to make the connection to scalebound is ridiculous imo, massive reach. Who cares about facebook? Half the people there may not even heard of scalebound either.

Given how niche both franchises I would assume the vast majority of the people interested in Nier.

Yes, just delay, delay and delay, while dropping millions and millions more into a project that is in all probability a total mess that needed to be scrapped and sent back to the drawing board. Sometimes dreams can be a little too big and I am betting that is large in part what we are seeing here. It was a neat as hell looking idea, though.

It's a big blow to the Xbox line up. Honestly there's a serious lack of single player story driven games. Well, exclusive ones at least. Everything is literally MP focused. Forza 7, State of Decay, Sea of Thieves, Crackdown...(and I've heard Crackdown isn't going too hot either, though nothing as bad as this).

Unless they have a bunch of first party studios secretly tucked away somewhere (which they don't that I know of), I genuinely struggle to think of what surprises they could have at E3 *as of right now*. Halo 6 is to be expected, and I don't see publishers playing ball much anymore with 3rd party exclusives unless Microsoft gives the Xbox division a huge budget to throw cash around, which I highly doubt. Their major first party IP are on a decline with Halo doing less than before and Gears 4 not selling that well at all relatively speaking (not good enough to sustain a huge studio with that many workers and budget).

What's happening now is the exact opposite of what Xbox fans seemed to want out of a Phil spencer leadership.

I remember when he became head of Xbox and everyone was saying how there'll be tons of new games, but they're still coasting on announcements from 2013-2014 and in that time, games have been cancelled, multiple studios closed including Lionhead...

As a big Xbox fan since day one, I'm not very hopeful for the future. Scorpio won't do anything without software to push it heavily.

Shinobi spitting hot truth fire as usual.

To be fair, a lot of great Japanese games came out for the OG Xbox. I think people forget how many great Japanese games came out exclusively for that platform:

Ninja Gaiden (Black),
DOA 3
DOA Ultimate
DOA Xtreme Beach Volleyball
Panzer Dragoon Orta
Phantom Dust
Shenmue II (North American exclusive)
Phantom Crash
Otogi
Otogi2
Crazy Taxi 3
Jet Set Radio Future
Gunvalkyrie
House of the Dead 3
Steel Battalion
Steel Battalion: Line of Contact

I'm sure I'm missing a few important titles. Sure, it doesn't compare to other consoles of that era, but it's fair to say that Xbox had a pretty good history of getting quality Japanese games.

It's downright silly.

Those making the connection probably don't know much about Drakengard/Nier.
You don't write ads targeting the five people who do know much about Drakengard/Nier. The ad reads like complete gibberish if you don't have anything to associate the dragon part with.

Lot of people here instantly made the connection. It doesn't even make sense. Troll a platinum cancellation with a platinum game.

Nier ads don't target people that know about Nier?

I guess the only way to get noticed for that shitty upcoming nothing-game is by associating it with an ubiquitous juggernaut like COD, GTA or Scalebound.

You forgot Metal Wolf Chaos.

I hope Nier does really well. Platinum deserves more success regardless of Scalebound. There seems to be a lot of great talent there and hopefully this proves to only be a minor setback.

I hope that demo helps. I know personally, I wasn't even looking at Nier until I played that demo and fell in love.

Well aware of that. I guess my post wasn't very clear and kind of snipe-y. MS did make a clear effort on the original Xbox, but TFLO was a real fuck-over for JRPG fans like me. Literally zero worthwhile JRPG exclusives came out on the original Xbox. TFLO was a major reason I purchased the system as a JRPG fan (I guess I was naive- I was young too), and I was very upset when it was canceled. They made a bigger push for JRPGs with 360, but nearly all of the good ones came out on other systems (Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey the noteworthy exceptions). Now with the One, they don't care about Japanese games period, not just JRPGs. Any Japanese-inspired game (Phantom Dust) or Japanese-developed game (Scalebound) financed by MS is getting canceled, and its library suffers majorly from a lack of diversity for non-indies. I guess they just don't care about curating a diverse library as long as they're making money.

Game wasn't delivering so MS moved the goalposts so they could kill it.

Indeed. Somewhere in the middle lies the truth. In which case, I can't really blame them from a business perspective. But sure, the game looked like it had potential underneath the mess that it probably became. I know I had high hopes for it.
