Sea of Thieves on PS5 reveals Microsoft's Trojan Horse to turn millions of PS5 users into Xbox users

And I gave up my MAU to Sony for a Miles Morales skin like a sucker.
I don't think either company care about massaging MAU figures, I do think that getting someone signed up for an account may have significance down the road.
It'll have significance if the service ever has enough exclusive games for people to pay for it, but so far that's exactly where Microsoft has been failing the most. It's a very long term strategy which makes it very risky.

I struggle to follows the ccs’s original post. So what is this “Trojan horse” doing? I buy a 3rd party Microsoft game on my PS, Sony gets a cut, MS gets a cut. I then play other games on my PS5 that Sony get a cut of while waiting for more 3rd party MS games to port over? Is that the Trojan Horse? Uh ohhh.

It's just like any other multipaltform title. Don't see how this is connected to people playing on Xbox since they are not even using an Xbox to begin with.

Well your still playing it on PS5. That's something your struggling to accept.

Let me make it simple for you.

PS5=/= Series X or S.

It definitely isn't the same as playing it on Xbox. If Microsoft wanted that they wouldn't have brought it over.

So a game running on Microsoft's servers, accumulating play time on Xbox, and unlocking Xbox achievements isn't the same as playing it on Xbox?!?

MS going 3rd party can be good for MS and also good for Sony and Nintendo. There's no reason to try and sell this as a loss for Playstation. It's ok to admit that.

Who doesn't have a Microsoft account at this point? I use Hotmail.

I've said this a million times. MS is a software company. They want everything to be a service. Xbox is a service before it is a console. So them bringing PS users into the Xbox service is entirely expected. I don't see what difference this makes. It's only old school gamers who still think Xbox is primarily a console.

No he's not. He'd argue that the Xbox app on the PC is not playing on Xbox because you're playing on PC.

He is talking about the Xbox console. You know this. He said it plainly.

I never talked about PC. Your the one that dragged PC into this. I was talking about PS5.

Learn the difference.

Or better yet compare PC to PS5 so you can tell the difference.

You're using PS5 hardware to play an Xbox game on Xbox services.

I unlocked two Xbox achievements not on Xbox hardware yesterday and clocked 12 hours of playtime in an Xbox game not running on Xbox hardware.

I can't believe you think you've so confidently proven your point. Literally none of those things prove you are playing on xbox. They show you are within the ecosystem and nothing else. Just because, for example, I can unlock Ubisoft nonsense on my PS5, I don't say I'm playing on Ubisoft Connect. I'm accessing services on software that's running natively on my PS5, but I'm still running the software on my PS5. Some of y'all have lost the plot. Listening to too much of these companies' corporate narratives.

Ok so I'm imagining the Xbox achievements that unlocked while I was playing on PS5. My playtime on Xbox didn't increase by 12 hours while I was playing on PS5. That's all imaginary. Whatever makes you feel better.

They are turning Xbox into a hub. whatever you play game on xbox / pc / PlayStation / switch. to MS Xbox doesn't mean xbox as hardware anymore. just the whole ecosystem.

I think that is cool what they are doing. despite the OP making it sound like its the end of the world. This way, If i play it xbox or any system, it will accurately track how many hours I played regardless of the platform.

as far as creating a MS account. bruh. EA been doing it since forever now. its normal. hell even Minecraft is the same. and that is been up since the PS3 days maybe

drama queen op lol ( kidding ...I think.... maybe....its classified )

so what ? you are unlocking them in your Xbox account as well as your playstation trophies. if EA had the same system, you would unlock the achievements in EA client as well as playstation client.

What is the problem ?

That's game data. Not console data.
The problem here is people equating the brand with hardware, as I mentioned xbox is not the hardware, the OP didn't mention xbox hardware either, yet people are comparing xbox to ps5, while one is a brand and the other hardware.
Ms is the owner, xbox is the brand, xsx is the hardware
Sony is the owner, playstation is the brand, ps5 is the hardware.
You obviously aren't playing on the hardware, that's not what OP is arguing.

But why is this distinction important? Sony gets paid when you play a game on their box, regardless of what brand is attached to that game. So Playstation as a brand still benefits from every game sold on its box.

I agree, but the OP kept arguing the same argument even replying to posts making it clear they were referring to consoles.

Should have just "I agree, but I'm not talking about consoles", but seems pretty obvious that he is being intentionaly ambiguous.

People are ignoring the part of the OP that explains that for the last 7-8 years MAU have become the more important metric for tracking user base. Everyone who plays SoT on PS5 is a part of the Xbox MAU reporting. That's why they're porting the games.

SoT's last player number was 30 million. The next time they report numbers it won't be split by platform. PS5 can add another 15-20 million to the user count of the game. Every single one of those users is now part of the Xbox ecosystem regardless of the box they play on.

It's spin because MS doesn't want to flat out say they're acting as a third party. I guess they think it makes them look weak or something. It's the opposite of proper communication.
I'm not sure what you are referring to now, but it's not something I was discussing.
