Anyone have good date ideas that are outside the city? I have a car! I hear Anacortes is beautiful during good weather.

My wife and I have a favorite getaway that I highly recommend, but only if you have a couple days and are OK with driving ~3.5 hours each way.

Southern Washington, right on the border with Oregon, is remarkably beautiful with a ton of amazing hiking trails. Right along the Columbia River Gorge. You can go hiking in both Washington and Oregon since you're right on the border between them, and it's just a few minutes to cross the Bridge of the Gods to get from one to the other.

There are two options for lodging in Stevenson, WA:

Skamania Lodge is the nice resort, but is pretty expensive, and not really intimate or special: http://www.skamania.com/

The better choice IMO is the Columbia Gorge Riverside Lodge: http://www.yelp.com/biz/columbia-gorge-riverside-lodge-stevenson-2

Their website is down right now. But it's super cheap, yet high-quality cabins you rent. Something like $80/night for a cabin with a little kitchenette where you can make food, a nearby 24-hour grocery story, a bunch of shops and little restaurants too.

Even if you're not going hiking around there, it makes for a great weekend getaway from Seattle :)

Unfortunately that's a bit too far, but I'll definitely keep these in mind for the future--thank you! I think we'll be going around Anacortes.

Went to Kukai again a couple weeks ago. Still no alcohol. I asked the waiter and he said that their liquor license is still tied up with the state liquor control board. No clue why.

Hey guys, will be visiting Seattle for the first time in December, and am thinking about spending a night out west in Leavenworth. Everything I'm reading says I'll need to be prepared to have snow tires/chains/AWD...do you know if rental cars up there have such options? I've been calling around without much luck, they can't even guarantee me an AWD vehicle.

You'll definitely want chains/AWD. Stevens pass can get nasty in the winter. As far as the rental car companies that offer either, sorry I'm not sure. You could rent an FF car, buy chains at Les Schwab and return them if you don't use them. Maybe not the best option but an option to consider.

Apparently (now former) employees filed a lawsuit against Paseo for:

  • Wage theft
  • inability to take breaks during shifts of 12+ hours
  • Inability to deal with medical emergencies
  • Racist treatment of hispanic employees vs. non-hispanic employees
  • Racist termination of all hispanic employees

Innocent until proven guilty of course, but if any or all of those allegations are true, fuck Paseo. One of the most cash-rich successful restaurants in Seattle and they can't fucking treat their employees right?

According to the letter of the law you would still need a set in the car, however I don't own a set and have AWD cars with traction tires (all season since I don't travel over the passes often).

Four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicles are exempt from chain requirements when all wheels are in gear and are equipped with approved traction devices, provided that tire chains for at least one set of drive tires are carried in the vehicle. See WAC 204-24-050.

I came to the thread to post the bad news but see I was too slow. Agreed though, if allegations are true fuck those guys. I'm going to open my own Paseo, with hookers, and blackjack! In fact, forget about the Paseo!

Paseos closed, truly a dark day.

Aw this is so sad if true. To be honest I am not surprised, many restaurants, particularly self-owned cash-only places, are skirting around so many labor laws.

Those Hispanic employees with the grievances should kickstart opening their own Cuban sandwich socialist co-op paradise and get Kshama Sawant and Jessica Spear to photo op with them and what not and help bring about delicious social change.

I will back at the "catered party at your house" level.

Damn this cold snap is bad news. Walking home from dinner, I helped an old lady get to the shelter in the area, poor girl was shivering like something else. Ran into another person just getting off a bus trying to find somewhere inside to stay the night. Ended up driving around the neighborhood for a bit, giving folks lifts to the shelter.

A good dozen people were wandering around clueless, most of them had never been to it but got desperate with the cold, came this way because they heard through the grapevine they'd find a spot to bed down.

I haven't been to the zoo in a while. Need to go again sometime!

We've got a membership. I take my daughter once or twice a week during the summer. Wonder if the animals will even be out today.

We live right across from a school. Weird seeing them open while I'm home due to weather.

Is there supposed to be snow over in Seattle tomorrow morning? It's variable as fuck over here between Bremerton and Kingston, depending on elevation. Sad hearing schools closing or being late this morning while I was at work at 6:30AM.

Shoring up some ideas for our 3 night trip, if you guys have any foodie suggestions, lay it on me (sad about Paseo's, that was on my to-do list). I'll have a car, so no worries about driving distances.

Attractions
Museum of Flight
Pike Market
Needle/Chihuly
Woodland Park
Fish Ladder/Chittenden Locks

Food
Ala Mode pie shop
Theo chocolate factory tour
Grinders Shoreline
Fuji sushi

Open to any suggestions at all, if it's awesome, I want in. I don't know anything about good breweries/wineries.

As I recommend to everyone: skip the Space Needle and go to Columbia Tower at 5th and Columbia. Their 73rd floor observation deck has better views of the city for a quarter of the price and virtually no tourist congestion. Chihuly museum at the Needle is nice, but not really essential. You can see his glass in a number of places throughout the city.

For food: Radiator Whiskey (make reservations; you'll likely still have to wait a bit, but it's worth it), Mashiko, Bell & Whete, Honoré Bakery (get a kouing aman, it's one of the best outside of France).

Well, the kickstarter doesn't have a "catered party at your house" level, but I backed it anyway.
