Seattle-GAF!

apparently all the polls had 522 succeeding by a good margin .. until the big tv commercial blitz happened and swung it the other way.

The polling before the ad campaign means fuck-all because few knew what a GMO was until it was explained to them. If the polling was done by an anti-GMO service it's reasonable to assume it's going to swing anti-GMO when they are the ones explaining the process.

My wife was going to vote yes until the Frankenfish ads started running by the pro-522 campaign. She wasn't comfortable with that level of fear-mongering. Before that we discussed it a few times and she was fine with the initiative passing.

And really, I could have voted yes if persuaded. I wasn't firmly ensconced one way or the other until just a few weeks ago. The GAF GMO discussion thread a few weeks back presented some fine arguments that persuaded my vote. The pro-522 crowd, meanwhile, said fuck Monsanto, lol, amirite? and called it a day.

So in the end, the unenlightened prevail.

The Frankenfish ads were ludicrous. I actually think this is a gray area and both sides have a point, but that ad made Pro 522 seem like a bunch of scammers. So if you want to blame anyone, blame the campaign itself. that was ludicrous.

Also, pro-label (named) sponsors were just as shady as anti-label corporations.

It was lose/lose.

Feel bad for Sham-wow Multipass or whatever her name was. Amazing blitz of ads but no information about what she actually stood for. Her rival, on the other hand, I hadn't even heard of, so am amazed he won.

I actually suspect lazy racism.

not sure how it should be hard to persuade anyone that making corporations openly declare how they make OUR FOOD is a good idea

Sawant's campaign kinda reminded me of the Occupy movement in that aspect.

Conlin was already on the council, so he had the incumbent thing going for him. And also not being a Socialist, which still has negative connotations in Seattle if you're not in certain demographic groups.

Yeah, I agree. But I'm also not surprised that people voted against it.

Yeah GMO legislation was too onerous and turns out maybe people aren't bothered that much by GMO foods.

I still agree and stand by more information being better than less, but I'm not really disappointed this failed. Wouldn't have changed my habits at all.

My wife is a dietitian who works for a Naturopathic doctor and even she and I were having reservations about 522. It was just too vague and unspecific. We ended up voting for it since we felt it was good enough, and could then potentially influence other states and such, but I'm not exactly torn up that it didn't pass.

The main thing that made me vote for it was actually the statement in opposition. The cognitive dissonance was amazing, where back-to-back they stated:

1) 522 is too expensive to implement
2) 522 isn't effective enough because it's too selective in what it covers

Surely those in opposition realize that it being more pervasive, solving #2, would make #1 even worse, right? These things take time. You can't get everything perfect right from the outset, but it sure seemed like a step in the right direction.

I can't speak on her TV ads (I'm a bit out of market these days...) but she is very specific on what she's trying to achieve -

Also, Conlin said he wouldn't run on 2015 so she's totally going to get elected next time.
Fuck yeah -

Though honestly, her specific stance on the issues is not really socialist, but still, even just having someone prove that you can use this label and win is a great step in the right direction.

I don't get the expensive part, you already have labels on food and I assume people know what they sell.

What was this frankenfish ad? Is it on youtube?

I'll admit it. I voted against I-522.

I just feel like it was designed to further GMO fear mongering. Requiring a scarlet letter on products without any real efforts to inform consumers about what it really means just left a bad taste in my mouth.

I liken it to the idea of forcing a label on non-organic products. Seems a bit silly in that case. Producers can, will and do label their products as being GMO free, and that's fine.

I think efforts really need to be made to separate the science of GMO products and the super shitty business practices of large agribusiness. Monsanto, et al, give us plenty of legit reason to hate them, globbing that in with GMO just muddies the waters.

black and white with scary music explaining unrelated tale of a genetically modified fish. Inferring that without labeling your kids will eat nothing but radioactive sea monsters. Can't find on YouTube from phone.

Can anyone recommend one of the area casinos? My bf and I are interested in trying one some afternoon just for fun and Yelp isn't really providing me with much consensus. The outlet mall next to Tulalip is a big draw for us, but that also sounds like the dirtiest/smelliest casino of the bunch, and I keep coming across complaints of cheating dealers and rigged machines... not that I would know enough about gambling one way or another, to be honest. We don't expect to be winning big or anything, just getting some entertainment from the place.

Tulalip
Muckleshoot
Snoqualmie
Clearwater
Angel of the Winds

Any others to consider?

I hated Angel fo the Winds, I'd cross that off right away personally. Haven't been to Muckleshoot or EQC.

Tulalip is cool. It's certainly the biggest of the bunch. It probably feels more like a Vegas casino than any of the others. Take that for what you will. Huge selection of slots and table games. Expect lots of smoke though. I've had really hit/miss experiences with the dealers there, some great, some assholes. I think you'll run into that just about everywhere though. Can't speak to the rigged machines accusation since I rarely play slots, but I can't imagine that being true.

Snoqualmie is a really well built casino. Beautiful decor, certainly one of the nicer looking casinos I've been to (in the area), and I recall it having a beautiful view of the mountains. It's smaller than Tulalip, but it has everything you'd want. I seem to recall it having a decently sized non-smoking section, but don't quote me on that. I think this is a much better date spot than Tulalip, which is probably better suited for a large group.

Clearwater is a nice choice as well. Keep in mind, this casino is 18+ so you may or may not be sitting at the table with a bunch of youngsters (it's where I went when I was 18). You'll have to take the ferry there since it's on Bainbridge Island, but being that you'll be on a date, I think that'd be really cool. It's a great trip. Clearwater even offers a free shuttle to/from the ferry ever hour. That way you don't have to pay for a car on the ferry and you can just walk on (way cheaper).

Hope that helps. For what you're doing I'd probably recommend Snoqualmie or Clearwater. The outlet malls near Tulalip aren't really that great anyway.

Snoqualmie is probably your best bet. I never go there though because even though it's better than Tulalip in that regard, it's still *way* too smoky for me.

Awesome, thanks! That's about 500x more informative than any googling I came up with.

I had mentioned maybe going to Bainbridge for a day anyhow, so Clearwater might be the better choice if the weather looks decent for Monday. Snoqualmie will be the alternate option.

The only advice I have is avoid Muckleshoot.

A lot of people like Tulalip but I've never been there myself. They have a lot of shopping there though if that appeals to you.

Think I've been to Tulalip and Snoqualmie once, but I'm not a huge gambler so I just get drunk and watch my friends gamble :lol

Tulalip outlets are great though.

It's not a good solution at all.

$15 an hour is great. It's more than great, you can live pretty nicely off of that if you have a roommate/girlfriend/whatever.

The problem is, where minimum wage is $15 bucks an hour, the cost of living is going to go up. The price of everything in that area is going to skyrocket. Rent especially. Local businesses are going to have to move, and the influx of people from other cities wanting to work in that area for the wages is going to blow up the local economy to the point where it isn't sustainable.

I think if they really wanted to be responsible about this they would have gone up in chunks. Maybe try $10 an hour first, then maybe $10.50 or $11. Jumping from $9.19 to $15 is incredibly irresponsible and it's going to have very bad consequences for the area.

I think that is a bit of fear propaganda that doesn't represent what will actually happen. The minimum wage right now is a fucking joke and trying to spread a raise out over a longer period of time would only continue to keep wages way behind where inflation has gone. More money for these workers means more money going back into the economy, healthier workers who can afford better food, and on and on.

While I am conflicted on it being applied to a CITY as it is in this case, I am all for it being applied to an AIRPORT because that will basically improve the quality of customer service overnight. Problem is, a lot of the shitty minimum wage customer service (including security to a certain extent) that I hate, is one of the only sources of income for immigrant workers in those neighborhoods. While I want my airport experience to be nicer, I am not sure I want that at the inevitable cost to diversity and "fairness."

The power just came back on in Greenlake.

We were actually at Ramen Man for the majority of the outage. We were home when the transformer blew, but left before the power went out.

Same here. I've been thinking about this and wondering if minimum wage is really the best answer to ensuring a living wage for people who work full time.
Minimum wage in general is a rather shitty solution to the problem, but considering it's one of the few things that cap wage suppression in the US, might as well set it at an appropriate level, and $15/hr sounds pretty appropriate to me.

I think that's the first time since I moved here that I heard of other people losing power but it didn't affect my house. I swear we lose power nearly 10 times a year.

Extra shitty since we have a tankless water heater and need power for hot water.

I am getting tankless. Hadn't thought of that. But our tank burst in our last house and believe me, I'll take a couple of hours of inconvenience.

DID YOU SEE ME!?!?!?!?!?!

What did you order? How was it?

Were you the guy with the buzz cut and glasses? Yep, I saw you.

We sat down in the basement area with our daughter. I had the spicy miso, and my wife had the regular spicy. It was a nice change of pace from spicy always being based on sesame oil. A couple things, though.

1. Get better Japanese beer (Hitachino, Baird, Coedo, etc.). I'll pay more for it. The Sapporo wasn't as refreshing as I remember it from long nights of drinking and eating in Japan.
2. A fryer would be awesome. I love karaage.

Yup that's me. The beer selection is something we could do and I'll let my boss know. The fryer wouldn't be possible, we don't meet regulations? Also it's currently a two man operation. Just two cooks. Looking for help.

Yeah, I wouldn't go back either (except that when I move I probably won't find a place with tankless).

The only other thing that sucks about it is that it requires a certain amount of waterflow to kick on. If your waterpressure gets low, it can take forever to kick in (or it won't kick in at all). There's a filter in there that's gotta get cleaned out. I didn't know this, and paid a guy to come fix my thing. I watched him work, and particularly if there were a helpful youtube video or whatever, I'm pretty sure I could do it in like 20 minutes or whatever, but yeah.
