Lol, I'm with Tain. Gunstar Heroes is a 6/10 game, y'all.
I don't even...
I'm not even mad.

I just... feel bad for you.

Like, how sad must your life be, that you can't appreciate how fuckballs-amazing Gunstar Heroes actually is?

It must be hard.
Hahaha. *fist bump* Couldn't agree more.

What's the best Shining Force on Genesis?
2. 1 is still very good though, but if you play 2 before 1, it might feel a bit clunky. SF2 improved on almost every aspect. I think I liked the art a bit more in SF1 though.

When does CD take place in the general story? Or a better question would be, did CD release before 2? I was planning on playing in order of release.

Speaking of which, why are the Sega CD back up carts so high >_<

Hahahaha welp. Sounds like the stuff you'd find in a bargain bin, except maybe even worse. Not sure what you were expecting, though, mind you. It was unlikely to have a lot of gems (or any) for that price.

No. It's way worse than one could have imagined.

It's all Madden, Mario Andretti, PGA Tour, etc etc. There is a decent pile of things like Lion King, Sonic 2, Green Dog, Tazmannia, Ecco the Dolphin Tides of Time, Space Harrier 2, etc etc.... But not nearly enough to make it worthwhile, and for the most part, it all looks like shit.

The Eliminate Down turned out to be a shitty looking reproduction.

Worst mistake I made in my life. As a game collector I'm ashamed.

Okay.. now.. What do I do..

1) Sell the whole 70 or so shit games as repro carts. Piles and piles of Madden.
Would the shipping even be worth while for the buyer?

2) Sell all the 130+ games in a massive bundle?
Again.. would the shipping even be worthwhile?

3) Split up the games into a selection of 10 or so sports + a few decent games + a genesis system, as several bundles that may be worthwhile for an individual looking to grab a cheap sega set?

4) Burn everything

What should I do?

I know I definitely need to sell the Brand New, Unopened, Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds 3DS XL now though. Will be cheapest on the net. Check the BST thread soon if interested.

I think CD is a collection of the Game Gear-games, so it is actually more than one game.

Btw, love how you can enter one of these retro-threads, and it will always be the same people talking in all of them, and they all share a huge backlog not of modern, but of 25 year old games just like myself :)

If memory serves CD took place shortly after 1, but before 2
its been years since I played it but I want to say you meet up with Anri from SF 1 after she's become queen

I bought my back-up cart back when Toys R Us was getting rid of all Sega CD stuff in like 95-96, and I still payed $30 for it, it was originally 49.99 USD.

Heh its kinda easy to get a classic backlog when you're hunting for fun/trying to snag the games you want at good prices.

I guess 30 bucks is an ok price... Well its supposed to arrive on Wednesday, and i'll be going through Lunar first anyway (if it works off the bat) so i've got time to find a cart.

Gunstar Heroes
Sin & Punishment 1/2
Guardian Heroes
Ikaruga
Alien Soldier
Gradius V

Bangai-O, Radiant Silvergun, Mischief Makers, Dynamite Headdy, McDonald etc aren't for everyone, but for a small group of ex-Konami people this is an excellent resume right here.

my man 16-bit can't be saved, but more of ya'll need to hear the message.

ROFL @ Cobra Commander.

I am not even trolling when I think their best work was at Konami. Honestly, I give them more credit for the concepts they achieved in the games, but not the actual games themselves. I am not saying Treasure sucks, just that I think they are highly overrated.

What's funny is that the one game of theirs I genuinely enjoyed isn't even on your list - Astro Boy for GBA. Now THAT was a good one! :)

I didn't care for the original Sin and Punishment, however I did enjoy the sequel and I have to admit that I never played Gradius V although I very much wanted to. Maybe one day, but that said, they did good work with Konami so I am sure it is great. hehe

Just took some pictures. This thing was set to torch mode basically. I tried lowering the "picture" setting, which apparently just reduced contrast... or something. Tames the image down a bit from looking like it's on fire. Though these were taken before I lowered that and moved the Mickey Mouse ears to the rear position. In the last picture you can see that the edges of the screen have some wonky problems. It's not severe enough to really bother me after the crazy shit my last TV did, and I'm not even sure how to fix it.

That all being said the image is much softer and a bit blurrier than the newer trinitron I swapped it out for. Sound quality is WAY better though, I'm still listening for any crackle. It feels well worn hahaha. Has a really cool old school vibe to play on though, adds some charm even if the picture isn't the best.

SF CD is a remake of the first two GG games. It's prety simple in design and scope. Overall it's the weakest SF game.

It goes like that :

SFIII (1,2 and 3) > SF 2 > SF Gaiden (GG game) > SF1 Remake (gba) > SF1 > SF CD

Are you going to s-video mod your genesis for that tv? Genesis composite is butt.

I wish I had the skill necessary to do such a thing =/

That... and this is going to sound kind of dumb, but I sort of prefer my games a little blurry on a CRT. It's basically the same way I would have enjoyed these games 20 years ago. There's a certain novelty to that. That and it's easier than fussing over the expensive stuff!

Playing my Genesis is sometimes painfull... I grew up on the glory of Scart cables and s-Video just doesn't cut it on my JVC X'eye :(

Is your Genesis S-Video modded? That might help tremendously with the picture.

Nope! I was referring to the picture in general from several sources. Even through s video it's a much softer image.

Addendum: Holy fucking shit the audio is amazing.

I think it's just going to take some time for it to warm up on me. I'm not a man who likes change.

You are going to get a tremendous improvement with s-video over composite. RGB is even better of course but there's no way that TV can take it. I'd personally recommend getting your Genesis or a 32X modded for S-Video.

Edit: Noticed you actually said you like stuff blurry. Eh. There's more to s-video than just making something less blurry. It clears up a lot of artifacts. Dot crawl. Rainbowing. Lot of stuff.

Well part of the problem is that in my current layout it's a massive pain to run more cable as I need my Genesis and SNES to run through a switcher and no less than 25ft of cable.

The cost of having someone else mod my system for me, having to get behind two bookshelves, and dramatically rearranging layout isn't currently worth the energy of s video. At least not yet.

EDIT: Sorry to keep cross posting stuff from the CRT thread but this thing is bizarre. I thought I was going crazy seeing the screen change clarity and brightness... but after a little digging... no these are features? This is a CRT with a dynamic contrast function from 1991? WTF IS this thing?

Is Super Bubble Bobble worth getting on cart?

I know it's a bootleg game, but it looks pretty cool.

Judging by the videos of it on the internet, it doesn't seem to be very faithful to Bubble Bobble. No bonus, the bubble physics is off... I think you're better going with the Master System version with a Power Base converter.

Went to add my Japanese copy of Gunstar Heroes to the for-sale pile, noticed that it's actually a Malaysian copy instead. I wonder if there's anything actually different about it than some minor cosmetic changes on the back label and warranty inserts.

Stone Age Gamer sells new back up carts for what I think is a reasonable price.

http://www.stoneagegamer.com/ultra-cd-backup-ram-cart.html

Edit: Oops, out of stock.

You just sign up to notified when they come back in stock. They come back in regularly and with that system you don't have to keep stalking the site - just wait for the in stock e-mail.

Cool, signed up. On that note, have there been any issues using that? Saves erasing or anything strange like that?

The Genesis/MegaDrive...Sega's most successful console, and in some respects you can't blame them for wanting to extend as much life out of it as possible (via Sega CD and 32x) because as the saying goes: ..."If it ain't broke, why fix it?"..

One of the mods is on our side, they moved us back out to Gaming! In the meantime, i finally got a copy of Splatterhouse 2. So ready to bust that out at home tonight.

Yeah I wont say who just to avoid mod favoritism or anything strange like that, but thanks to the mod who moved it. Much appreciated.

Megadrive was the only thread out of all the retrogaming ones stuck in community

Hardly any favoritism to get it on the gaming side :p

Funny enough I just ordered the Gunstar Heroes Treasure Box because it's a better way to play Alien Soldier than the dumb stupid 50hz Steam release. And I'm not ready to jump on an MD copy just yet.

I like 1 for a lot of reasons but 2 edges it out for fine-tuning the gameplay and having an "open world." I think the story for 1 is much better since it doesn't rely on fairy tale tropes.
I agree. 1 has a standard "defeat the rising evil" story, but it works. I found the whole princess in distress thing in 2 mildly distasteful even back in the day, it was so lame. And I think I slightly prefer the art in 1 (with some exceptions -- I think the pegasus knights and giant bats looked better in 2, for instance). Those runefaust knights were so badass, and I loved the promoted mages's designs in 1.

Still love 2 to death, though. Such fun and timeless games. <3

Not to my knowledge.

Cool.

Im thinking these are some good candidates for the next high score challenge? Remember this is about just having fun / trying out new games / clearing out that backlog.

  • Columns
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Shadow Dancer
  • Alien Storm
  • Super Hang On

If Shadow Dancer isn't chosen I will sic Yamato on you.

Not that I'll participate, but seconded.

I wouldn't mind trying Shadow Dancer

So far it seems like the next high score challenge will be Shadow Dancer, any more input?
