Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

I feel old seeing that...Altered Beast is one of the earliest games I've played on the system.=p

We got screwed on the art as usual (you'll also notice the code G-4001 meaning first release on the system):

yeah, saw that figure & can't wait to see what else comes up in that line!

also, it's funny seeing Bar81 around SHMUPs forum as well, heh

hey bkfount , Morfeo just PM'd me and said forget it, he doesn't want that game anymore
just so you know bruh

Actually, bkfount, Irishninja just got some shinobis on his way to his home, so he probably wont need that copy anymore. Just to let you know who you should sell it to bro.

sounds like everyone's taken care of then, lol. This one is already claimed for a trade, I'll be on the lookout for more cheap ones though. I bought the first one I came across with the old back, so they can't be super rare.

I struggled getting to Stage 3 (this game is Cheap Deaths Ahoy) and I guess I have the not Rambo version before the Spider-Man copyright notice.

Ah well, my experience getting that far just to check pretty much means I probably would have never bothered getting to the Bat-Man boss anyway.

It's not hard as a ninja gaiden, but does take practice and memorization of enemy patterns.

Does anyone object to me scrapping the boxes and art for these?

I need to make some bundles and no one will pay shipping for a bundle w/ these kinds of games as long as they're in their cases.

Sell the empty cases to people in this thread, I know cats like Irish print out reproduction covers for games they don't have boxes for. Legit Genesis cases using repro art still look much nicer than UGCs imo.

That's so much nicer than what we got in the U.S. / NA.

Edit: I'd love to see a hi-res image of the Japanese Jyuohki / Altered Beast arcade flyer. So far this is all I could find:

Maybe someone with some time can help me fine a full res version.
I'm trying using different combinations of 獣王記 - Jūōki - Jyuohki - Beast King's Chronicle Flyer

The UK / EU flyer

Oh yeah, the Famicom got a conversion by Asmik

As did the PCE on HuCard and PCE CD.

He who pursues two rabbits gets two rabbits.
JP art is cool and all, but I have a pretty big soft spot for early-Genesis black-and-white checkerboard.

16's right, i'm actually needing about 10 non-EA/regular Genesis sized boxes if you're looking to let them go for cheap! lemme know, i also gotta track down a Sega-CD/Saturn case now too, heh.

ps he's totally right about traditional clamshells > UGC's, i mean honestly my entire UGC collection is just making them an equivalent for nintendo (N64, SNES & NES) since they were too cheap in the 90's

I'm almost certain I'll be breaking them down, selling the carts separately from the cases for repros or junk, and the cases will be separate and I'll bundle those together too. I'll let you know.

I have some Saturn cases in this bundle of junk but most of them are broken.

I'm going to rattle some bones, here:

Altered Beast is not a great game.

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Really? Altered Beast not a great game you say. What's next? The sky is blue? Water is wet?

Here's a real shocker - no one thinks Altered Beast is even a good game. It's actually kind of a shit game, but it was the original pack in game with the system so anyone who was on board early played it and it's got a certain nostalgia value due to that. If it wasn't for that (and the amazing JP artwork), it certainly wouldn't be in my collection since it would never come close to qualifying based on quality alone.

IrishNinja

Member
oh yeah, i don't at all care for nostalgia goggle arguments, but bad franchise games & stuff like AB is highly applicable. it served its purpose - to wow people at the time with big pixels & effects - but it's not a classic for the ages.

that said, i will find it CIB one day (online or garage sale) for the less-than-ten-dollars that it's worth.

I love Altered Beast. Definitely have nostalgia glasses on, but I still today have a blast whenever I play it. So many good memories: such calling the Bear form Smokey, and who doesn't get excited when the game starts?

I love Beat 'Em Ups but Altered Beast just doesn't hold up for me. Golden Axe still holds up and Alien Storm has its charms.

So YOU'RE the guy that gets people to bring up Altered Beast whenever we have a SNES vs Genesis thread ?! :)

I was hyped for it in the arcade as a kid, but even that version is pretty shallow.

Altered Beast was actually one of the problems with the early Genesis sales. It was repetitive, and simply didn't appeal to many people. Lousy pack in. Not Keith Courage lousy, but damn close.

I dont think Altered Beast is a great game or anything, but its also not as terrible as its reputation nowadays imo. Well worth it to own and play through it for the historical place it holds, and its decently fun doing so imo.

Timu

Member
I'm very nostalgic about Altered Beast but looking at it now it's certainly far from the best that Genesis had to offer as there are many, many games better than it but also lots of games worse than it on the system itself so that balances it out. Wise Fwom Your Gwave is very memorable though.

It's not horrible but it's not great either. Has some Nostalgic charm for sure.

Altered Beast sucks, but back in the day it was all WOW THOSE NEW GEN GRAPHICS. Kind of like Ryse and The Order 1886. ;)

I disagree that Golden Axe still holds up either. It's a truly awful game.

LOL. Love how you include this game that isnt even out yet. Not that I fault you for it - it definitely looks exactly like this kind of game.

The controls are a little stiff but the gameplay is fantastic and holds up really well as a Beat 'Em Up.

I've seen enough of their "gameplay" footage. Generic cinematic TPS with stupid QTEs, no thanks.

I agree. Still keeping an open mind and hoping for the best though.

Ah who am I kidding, the "gameplay" looks like junk and this will be another boring "cinematic experience" that will be forgotten quickly.

You are not the only one. I took to recreating some Genesis box art with that style. Was gonna keep going but I ran out time at the moment. Do plan to get back to it one day.

Where did you get your perfect game shelf?? I'm in the market for such a thing. Trying to get organized.

I'm going to do something a little annoying and quote a massive but hugely impressive post that SonicMegaDrive put together. This is a fantastic resource for people looking to dip their toes in the Genny library.

Hopefully this has already been posted.

My Genesis Guide - I separeted the good from the bad in the Sega Genesis library

You probably remember my NES guide from about a week ago (here), and now I've made one for my favorite system of all - the Sega Genesis! This lists every American Genesis game ever released and separates them into 5 categories - BEST, Good, Worth Playing, Not for everybody, and AVOID. If anybody wants, they can list all the really good MegaDrive only games like Alien Soldier and Panorama Cotton if they want, but this is mainy used as a North American buyers guide.

Check it out. If you see anything that you disagree with, tell me what I should change, and why. Remember, this is mostly my opinion(I haven't beaten every game I've ranked here - sometimes I'd only demo a game for a minute or two before coming to a conclusion).

Hopefully, this can be used as a reference guide for anybody looking for a good game to play.

I skimmed through that quote (A lot of it I agree with) but Splatterhouse 2 and 3 (especially 3) are beat 'em ups and should be in that category rather then Action.

BTW the System 16B arcade Altered Beast can be found on:

-SEGA Genesis Collection on PlayStation 2 (not on the PSP ver AFAIK)
-XBLA for 360
-PSN for PS3
-Wii Virtual Console Arcade
<---- video review (dunno if it's playable on Wii U or not) -For those of you who only have Nintendo platforms, this is the one you want cause you get the true ending which I won't spoil.

That's not counting the many places one can find the MD/Genesis version of Altered Beast, and which the 3DS version is based on.

I would honestly avoid Double Dragon 3 on Genesis unless you want to die a lot as it has the worst hit detection in any game, period, as half of your attacks don't hit the enemies and some are near useless(jump kick).

Also caught this:

Fighting:
BEST: Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition, Super Street Fighter II, Virtua Fighter 2
GOOD: Eternal Champions, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate MK3, Justice League Task Force, Samurai Shodown, Fatal Fury, Fatal Fury 2, World Heroes, TMNT: Tournament Fighters,
Worth Trying: Mortal Kombat, Primal Rage, Clayfighter, Ballz 3-D, WeaponLord,
Not for Everybody: Heavy Nova, Art of Fighting, King of the Monsters, King of the Monsters 2, Deadly Moves, Double Dragon V, VR Troopers,
AVOID: Street Smart, Ka-ge-ki: Fists of Steel, Fighting Masters, Slaughtersport, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Beast Wrestler, Brutal: Paws of Fury, Time Killers, Rise of the Robots, Budokan: The Martial Spirit, Pit-Fighter

What are those doing under the Good category? The TMNT fighter is pretty bad especially when comparing it to the SNES counter part, Eternal Champions is a matter of taste but gameplay-wise it's bad. Virtua Fighter 2 is nowhere near as good as its 3D counterparts and by it self it's average. Justice League is an atrocity. One of the worst fighters ever made.

I'd put the ones I bolded in the Worth Trying category and Justic League in avoid. I'd put King of the Monsters 1 and 2 and WeaponLord in the Good spot.

And this:

Pinball/Break-Out
BEST: Dragon's Fury, Dragon's Revenge, Sonic Spinball
GOOD: Crueball, Virtual Pinball
Worth Trying: Dino Land,
Not for Everybody: Devilish

Sonic Spinball? Really? It's mediocre, maybe good. But Devilish is way better not to mention easier.

Not trying to be one of those guys but there's some glaring errors in that list.

i must've rented Marvel Land 2 or 3 times, never knew what to make of that game looking back

*edit JLA wasn't good, Eternal Champions didn't age well but it was good at the time

Eternal Champions is garbage on Genesis when the Sega CD version exists.

Also, i wont hear shit-talking on The Ooze
