POWER-UP!

...I think I'm out of practice, I only made it to the boss of the fourth level. I'm going to blame it on the PS3 controller I was using... With a true Genesis pad, I'd be fighting NEFF's final form by now.

I'm gonna try going through the whole game without transforming into any of the beasts, just collecting 1 or 2 spirit balls (not 3) each level.

Yes, you can do that on the coin-op arcade (and w/ MAME) if you have a ton of lives/credits. Forgot how many lives/credits/life bars you can set on the PS3/360 versions. I think it also might be possible on the MD/Gen but it's been so long since I tried.

(Arcade) You will keep going through each level, meet Neff at least twice IIRC, if you're not transformed by the 3rd time, he becomes the level boss, and you can still beat each boss as a man / super man, it's just more difficult.

Edit: Yeah, MD/Genesis no transformation longplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPvGsq9b7S8

I wonder where he is today...

Anyway, looks like Shadow Dancer is going to be it for the next high score challenge. I'll get the post together and this time I guess we'll make the challenge last 2 weeks? What do you guys think is a good time frame, because 1 week seemed too short for most.

Mind BLOWN! I never knew this. Who says Altered Beast has no replay value?

I saw a clean copy of Arcus Odyssey in a small town shop during my recent mini-vacation for $20.

I really should have bought it, but I was already burning through so much cash on silly stuff I figured I could save it for another day.

I vaguely recall doing that once on Genesis in '90 (I didn't trust my memory so I looked for a YT vid) but I clearly remember playing though the arcade without ever transforming when I bought a converted Altered Beast coin-op in '98 for $300 delivered.

And yes, you can do it with 2 players.

I heard of the game once or twice early on in this thread life...and I thought like most wolfteam games it would be good but cheap.

100+ bucks?! This one must be legit rare.

EDIT: Ok thats just Amazon...but still the game looks cool. I wonder if thats another one I might just have to go JP with.

I used to see it collecting dust at EBgames all the time...I even owned it for a weekend and then returned it for a refund too (Back then they used to let you do that when a game sucked). It isn't very good IMO.

I don't think I would call it rare at all in my experience and it certainly isn't worth $100...

LOL I guess I should have kept it. :p

I owned most of Wolfteam's Genesis games (El Viento, Final Zone, Sol-Feces etc) back during the Genesis era. I say owned past tense because 40% of my Genesis collection that was stored in my father's basement is missing 10 years after I put it down there and I fear the flood he had ruined it all and he is trying to cover up for the fact. I have never really been too impressed with them outside Grenada, which was one of their best in my opinion and I still luckily currently own my old copy of it.

Yeah...alot of games really arent worth the price they are asking, while some games can be had for really cheap, and should be worth more.

you won't be disappointed! it's a great top-down SHMUP, and the power sets are great. the nature of the mazes (think some dungeons in Golvelius, if you've played that one) means you're gonna die choosing the wrong path sometimes, but that's part of the learning curve.

it's one of those difficult ones in such a way that's not cheap, just requires more dedication than i put into most of the genre, haha. really underrated game overall.

You want a cool Genesis game suggestion that I don't see mentioned much around here?

Elemental Master

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ug2DSG9N4wY

Renovation only published it, it's a TechnoSoft game and MUCH better than Arcus. :p

Discovered that about a year ago. It is (IMHO) the best SHMUP on the Genesis. Not too hard once you figure out that your default weapon gets powered up in the last level or two and you have to hold it down to charge it. A little esoteric, I wonder if that's mentioned in the manual.

You guys inspired me to keep going on my project of making original cases for my Genesis games. I just made Gaiares tonight, found some cool art and used that. Little bit rusty, but Photoshop comes back to you eventually. I actually made Centy on the tail end of when I originally was doing these last summer but never printed it originally as I really didn't like the artwork.

I plan to give Midnight Resistance a crack here in a few days, just gotta figure out what I'm gonna do with the original art as I will have to fill in where the logo is, I may use the arcade artwork as I like it more

Anyways here the pictures of my newest just printed out.

They aren't perfect, I for some reason don't notice typos until after I print them but it's a waste of ink to print again so I just said good enough. I suppose I could also set the 1-2 player image correctly too but I'm lazy and honestly just can't be bothered.

man, do not sweat the details - it's your collection, you know? and those look so baller with that design...for real, i like encouraging you but we both know this ends with your entire collection being this way months later & you potentially unemployed, haha

Played through World of Illusion for the first time. Maybe it's better with two players but single player is way too easy and not much fun. Castle of Illusion is a far better game.

It's an overall easy game, which is good for the purpose I'm using it for, introducing people to gaming. I just wish it was possible to turn friendly fire off, it makes the person following feel useless as they can't mash buttons. It's not really a game for bros, but for people who never held a controller before, I think it's great.

Was having a blast playing some Mega Drive yesterday! I visited a friend who had bought a flashcart so I brought my switchless modded model 1 and we played a bunch of stuff :D Including rare shooters like Panarama Cotten and Battle Mania 2 which were astounding, as well as some interesting beta stuff.

Unfortunately though, it was a harsh reminder that even when playing the superior Japanese version that I still don't particularly like Streets of Rage 3 :/ Even at its best the soundtrack doesn't come close to the majesty of the music in 1-2, and the gameplay is nowhere near as satisfying or visceral. It barely feels like you're making impact when you're attacking, which is a far cry from how meaty every punch or kick feels in 2.

Punctuation, man.

Are you asking if there are any problems with the RetroN5? Or just problems in relation to the PBC? They have announced compatibility so it probably work. Now, don't expect 100% compatibility, your saves may be deleted, the 3D glasses won't work, etc. The usual Retron5 stuff.

What prices should I typically be paying for Genesis games? I figured they should be drastically cheaper than SNES, but I saw Ristar going for about 40-60.

Ristar was a later release so I imagine it was produced in smaller quantities. There are plenty of great games for cheap. What are you into?

Go to some flea markets/garage sales, besides the really high-profile releases most of the genesis stuff is still fairly cheap, but we are really right on the edge of all the Genesis stuff going up in value in my opinion. As it is all the high-profile stuff is starting to go up.

But for example my local flea market before it closed had a guy that sold a ton of cart only Genesis games, I was paying $2 a piece for most, but a few of the better games, Strider, Shining in the Darkness, etc were $5 a piece, I built up most of my games from this guy and got a lot of the shmups (including Grind Stormer) at the $2 price, sure condition could always be better but I got a lot of quality games to play for good prices.

If you want games like MUSHA, Crusader of Centy, Streets of Rage 3, Contra, Castlevania, you'll probably have to pay up on ebay, as I personally haven't really seen them around locally. I did manage to get Castlevania for $25 cart only at a local game shop last year, but the others I resorted to ebay/gaming forums. Got MUSHA for $70 last year and Centy for $50.

I settled for cart only for most of my Genesis stuff as it was a lot cheaper, and I started to make my own cases as I showed above. I will say CIB genesis games went up in price fast recently and it's not worth the price in my opinion.

A cart collection is significantly cheaper and easier to do then a CIB collection. A lot of the best games cost money, but the disparity between, say, a cart only of Crusader and a complete one is big. If i hadn't already been so far down the rabbit hole, i probably would have bailed on CIB. I do love having them like that though.

So I was listening to Back in my Play, and Virtua Racing came up as costing about $100 on release... which got me thinking, what were some of the most expensive Genesis carts on release? A quick google search didn't find what I was looking for, was wondering if anyone here has any idea or some links to articles.

Phantasy Star IV was up there, IIRC

Phantasy Star IV was up there, IIRC

I think I originally bought my PSIV for $80 when it first came out. I may be wrong about that, but it sounds about right.

I have been wanting to break out my Phantasy Star games and start the series over from the beginning, but I'm just not sure if I have the 250 hours to do the series justice right now.

With that said, I finally ended up breaking open the last of the boxes I purchased from the used game stores that I had in storage. Though I ended up with some great items (ended up with two more copies of MUSHA, one cart only, one without the manual, amongst a few other things), I think the funniest box I opened was a box that contained 24 copies of Mutant Football League. I mean, I loved the game as a kid, but who the fuck needs 24 copies of that game?

Maybe I'll give them away on GAF later this year for free when I have a bit more money to cover the shipping costs.

Or just give Gunstar the MUSHA cart because he has a lonely box and manual he bought that would love to have the hole in their chest filled <3

I kid, that would be really cool in general of you to do.

On a serious note though, does any of those 24 copies of Mutant League have the cards in them? I really want those, i'd pay the shipping to have those in my copy (That and the poster). Its one of my favorite games.

Yeah. The biggest issue with Crusader is that it came in one of those shitty-ass cardboard boxes toward the end of the Genesis' lifespan. Most of those got mangled badly and thrown in the trash. There's quite a few of those cardboard boxes that are hard to track down, like Mega Bomberman and Ristar, to name a few.

Unfortunately not. The Mutant League Football games are all in generic shells with only a few having manuals. Other than that, no inserts were included with them.

Sign me up for one if so. Ive always wanted to check that out.

That being said, Arcus still looks interesting to me...if i could swing a cheap jp version, it shouldnt be too much trouble? Looks more like a straight action than rpg.

Womp ive already got Elemental master from a past recommend, and its awesome for those asking.

Now that I'm thinking about it, Comix Zone was released like that too. Also Vectorman 2.

Maybe I got lucky, but I got my copy of Contra CIB for like 25 bucks earlier in the Summer.

Feel like I'm probably going to have to settle for just the cart on Ristar, though.

Shining Force II and Phantasy Star IV as well. Castlevania Bloodlines and Earthworm Jim had both clamshell and cardboard variants depending on when they were printed. Road Rash II had a late re-release with cardboard box and standard (i.e. non-EA yellow tab) cartridge as well.

PS IV was $99.99 along with Virtrua Racer on release (Its why I waited on purchasing my copy of PS IV).

I talked the local rental store owner into letting me buy off him because I was only person renting it. If I wasn't renting it, it sat there. I still paid him $75 or $80 for it (I don't remember exactly, it was back in 95.
