Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

What's up. Been hooking up my retro stuff, and haven't popped in here before. Got some mad love for the Genesis, it was the first system I bought with my own money and it did what Nintedon't.

I finally got around to trying some of my 32X games last night (had the system for like 6 years, and only ever played Star Wars Arcade, and that was only to make sure it worked). So, first game I try

Cosmic_Carnage_for_Sega_32X.jpg

Fuck, what did I do? Please say I'm missing something, cause this game is complete ass. From the 5 or so matches I played, it looks like the only thing this game did that is 'cool' is the psuedo 3-D when doing a sweep or something. There is blood, which was probably worth something back then, but only when you beat them and dismember them, possibly cutting arms off, or the head, or chopping them in half. I guess you also blow up if you fail to continue, so there is that.

Afterwards, figure I'll try something that should be good, Doom. Can't be worse than the SNES version. I guess, it is better than the SNES version, but why is it boxed?

Got this nice 32-bit set up, and still can't fill my screen with images from hell? Dammit.

So, is there anything good for the 32X? I didn't buy one back in the day, since it was around the time I started really working and didn't have time for video games with work and school. Was looking at Blackthorne, but it is pretty expensive, but is it worth it? What about Kolibri? Any suggestions would be welcome. (I have Virtua Racer, Quarteback Club, and Metal Head, in addition to the aforementioned)

Knuckles Chaotix but that's pretty like it or hate it. I heard Star Wars Arcade was decent.

Star Wars Arcade, Virtua Racing Deluxe (both of which you seem to have already...), and Shadow Squadron are my favorites of the ones I have.

I thought that the Doom port was pretty decent myself (the music gets annoying after a while, though, but at least you can turn it off). Knuckles Chaotix...well, I wouldn't personally recommend it, but I don't think it's a terrible game or anything. The only other game I have is Cosmic Carnage, which is bad in a charming sort of way to me, so I play it occasionally.

I want to get Kolibri, Virtua Fighter (though I have the Remix Saturn version), After Burner, Space Harrier, and Tempo. Maybe NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, but I might get the Saturn version instead. Not sure yet.

I've had my 32X since around launch, but I didn't buy much for it...I only had four games until I got Doom and Cosmic Carnage a year or two ago. I've still always kept it hooked up, though.

Star Wars Arcade is decent and they did add to the game to make it a little longer.

Figured I would try to get Chaotix, seems to have cooled a little in price since I got my 32X, or other stuff is just getting more expensive making me think it is cheaper than it was. Either way works for me.

EDIT: Doom is decent, I was just so pissed that screen is fully used. It does look a lot better than the SNES version though, and the music was better, IMO, but those damn brick bars. Plus, that game is really difficult to go back to now, for me. Just so used to modern shooters it seemed like I was playing again for the first time. No strafing, no right thumstick for moving the reticule up or down, no jump. Will go back to it though.

Was looking at Virtua Fighter, though I have it on Saturn too. And I did win an unopened copy of the CD/32X game Corpse Killer for $15, always had a soft spot for FMV games, but being unopened I don't know if I want to open it.

It's a great version of Space Harrier.

Tempo is gorgeous but it has mediocre level design and ends up being a little boring.

Kolibri is by the same people that made Ecco and the intro level was pretty similar. It's more of a really weird shooter. Haven't put enough time into it yet.

Fellow NeoGAF member, cj_iwakura, sent me a copy of the Sega CD version a few months ago. It's pretty hilarious at times.

I wish those games weren't so difficult, would be great to play while drinking if they were easier. Glad to here this can be funny. Always wanted it because of the ads in EGM, made it look like it would be the FMV game, with zombies, and horror. I was very naive.

Replaying Ristar. Man, this one is criminally unknown. A masterpiece of 16 bit platforming. Did Sega even advertize this? I don't remember any commercials or adverts and I remember the Comix Zone commercial (a game released around the same time) pretty well.

to be honest, i think Ristar was so late most people (myself included) slept. i saw him as a gashapon in Shenmue before the game itself, and only went back cause it was on so many lists. tragic.

Awesome, one of my Sega CDs is working, thought I was going to have to fix the fuse, but loaded right up. And even better, RAM cart battery is still going. Now, to see if my Popful Mail disc is still good. Played the shit out of that game and the disc looks worse for the wear. Doesn't help that my little bros also played it, but didn't take care of it nearly as well.

ya'll talkin shit about Cosmic Carnage is the reason we'll never get Mark from Classic Game Room on here
Well, I didn't mean to offend. I was asking if there was something to look forward to in that game. It had potential, kinda. Neat that your armor changes color depending on what pieces you use.

I was too grown up for Ristar when it came out. Unless it looked as good as DKC.

Played it on Genesis Ultimate hits for PS3 I think I did enjoy it.

But we have love for Truxton, right?

If anything the deal breaker is that we don't really have a Vectrex thread.

doom, space harrier, virtua racing and virtua fighter are the best 32x games IMO

Or you can just toss the entire mushroom out and have a better package for it. :3

Also, 32x trollan aside, why did Elemental Master Shoot up in price? Someone make a vidoe about it, or just Renovation games going up in price like someone else mentioned?

I used to play that back in the day, what an awesome game it was!!!

I've been posting Elemental Master music everywhere, pretty much any chance I get. I claim responsibility.

Just did a lil eBay negotiating with a seller and snagged a copy of Musha, no box. I really need to slow down on my buying, but couldn't help myself.

Congrats, I don't know if it's worth the asking price, but it's a peach of a game (<3 Compile).

I have a manual and box I'll eventually want to sell if you ever want to make that thing complete.

Maybe try the ol' DOS version out instead? You still can't look up/down or jump (unless you use a source port), but strafing and mouselook are kind of a godsend.

I remember getting a new issue of a UK SEGA magazine that had Ristar plastered on the cover with the words "SONIC IS DEAD" in massive text.

My naïve 7 - 8 year old self immediately grew concerned, because I loved Sonic back in the day. Regardless, I got Ristar for Christmas because I though the graphics were sick hot (and they still are!) Fantastic game!

Ha ha, yes - pretty much! Sonic Advance is the only Sonic title post the Mega Drive ones that I can say I enjoyed thoroughly.

It's a crying shame Ristar only lasted for a single game, though. He recently made a cameo appearance in Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing, but aside from his 8 and 16 bit game, that was it. I would have LOVED to see a beautiful, side scrolling sequel on the SEGA Saturn with graphics akin to Rayman and CD quality music. One can dream.

I finally have a Genesis, CD and 32x combo. My fuses showed up in the mail today to fix up the Sega CD I picked up from last weeks flea market. Now I have to get some games for the Sega CD.

Ristar came out in...early '95, I think? That was right after the Japanese Saturn launch.

They should have at least released a port of the game for the Saturn with enhanced music and visuals, much like they did with Sonic 3D Blast. That would have been amazing.

Also, I concur with the above feelings that Ristar is criminally underrated. It's one of the finest platformers of the whole 16-bit era.

Considering the other games that people praise, it is weird that Ristar doesn't come up more often. I mean if you're backing shit like Vapor Trail then Ristar should be god tier to you.

I picked up a copy of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers earlier today for 3 dollars at a local thrift store. What a truly terrible piece of trash. Totally worth it just to laugh at the cheesy dialogue, though.

Sega CD has a lot of great games, but it also has a shocking number of fun garbage titles.

This probably falls under the "oh shit, that's expensive nowadays" tier, but I have to recommend SNATCHER. It's a Hideo Kojima game with a cyberpunk style setting and a plot not dissimilar to Blade Runner. It's sort of graphic / text adventure title with some incredibly atmospheric moments, cheesy but enjoyable voice acting and a killer soundtrack. I love it and the SEGA CD version is the best one, IMO.

Snatcher actually has a pretty admirable English dub for the time period. The game is still surprisingly affordable(if you consider $250 to $350 "affordable") at the moment. If I had to guess, in a few years it'll probably be in the 500-600 dollar range, so now would be a good time to pick that one up if you can.

You can strafe in the 32X version. Just hold down C. It's not quite the same as being able to turn and strafe at the same time, though.

But, yeah, the original is the best version. The ports to Xbox, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 are also great.

I wish those games weren't so difficult, would be great to play while drinking if they were easier. Glad to here this can be funny. Always wanted it because of the ads in EGM, made it look like it would be the FMV game, with zombies, and horror. I was very naive.

Yeah, it's a pretty tough game. Also, a little tip: Don't have more than one controller plugged in at a time while playing Corpse Killer. It causes a weird thing where the controls get split up between the two (aiming and shooting on one, menus and item switching on the other), at least in the Sega CD version. It made my first time playing the game really annoying. The second time I played, I unplugged the second controller, and everything was fine.

Anyway, a lot of the recent posts are making me want to play Ristar again. Maybe I'll do that soon... I also need to play Shadow Dancer again so I can post some scores.

YES. So glad to see Ristar getting so much love. My favourite platformer, I think. I did love the Genesis Sonic games, but IMO Ristar was better. Gorgeous art, fantastic music, pretty challenging, and the idle animations were the cutest things ever.

There was a lot of nice attention to detail. For example if you made the grab move and Ristar's hands touched an icy platform, he'd withdraw them with a shiver. And the idle animation varying by level... genius. Like how he'd fan himself in Planet Scorch because it was so hot, or he'd snap his fingers and sing along in Planet Sonata. <3 Someone make gifs of those! xD

In retrospect, they were right.
LOL, so true. Can't stand any Sonic games post-Knuckles/CD myself.

You and me both. Or a modern Ristar with the Ubi-Art engine... O_O

"imagine if Treasure made a Sonic game"
yes please

Picked it up. Its pretty good.

About Cosmic Carnage...
my issue with that game is its really not balanced well.

The snake character, for example, her grab takes precedence over almost everything. Its really not good.

Stand outs on the 32X?

Kolibri is an interesting take on the shooter genre...it kind of feels like Defender, or most recently Resogun on PS4.

People will say Knuckles Chaotix...I'm not one of those people, but to be fair at the time I played it I was suffering from platformer burnout. Even then, I'd say give it a go.

I feel that Metal Head is actually pretty impressive for a FPS/3rdPS style mech game. Its a bit slow, but pretty good.

STar Wars Arcade is pretty fun, and it can be a blast with a second player.

Shadow Squadron is a 3d space game like wing commander, but has similar pros/cons as Metal Head.

32X sports the best overall version of Virtua Racing

32X version of Mortal Kombat II is decent

Space Harrier is always fun

Ristar came out late in the Genesis life, at a time where consoles were overflowing with mascot-type games. Sega didn't advertise it as much as other manufacturers where pushing their mascot games. All eyes where turning to the Playstation and Saturn anyway. My guess is the game was too kid friendly for the edgy Sega brand, so didn't fit the marketing well, and Sega was also focusing marketing funds on the Saturn.

Thanks for the 32x suggestions. Will be picking up some of them for sure.

Also thanks for the tip on holding C in Doom. Was going to go back to it, just threw it in the other night to give it a shot and was surprised at how difficult it was to play now.

Really wishing I would have picked up Snatcher a few years ago when I was on my Sega CD kick.

And glad to see Popful Mail get another recommendation. Game is pretty awesome as an action RPG and I really enjoyed the dub back in the day. Don't think it holds up to well, but the nostalgia is strong with that one for me.

Does any one have any advice about S-Video cables? The Retro-bit ones on Amazon fine, they are only like $5. Hopefully in the next month I will have my retro center hooked up to take pictures, but currently it is a mess, with unpacking and trying to get it sorted.

Not sure if you're aware, but Sega Genesis will not output S-Video unless modded to do so.
