Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

On that note, any suggestions on getting an X'Eye s-video modded?

I've been thinking about the whole RGB and upscaler stuff and I might just concede to a nice TV and modding everything for s-video due to costs.

Guys can you tell me what to do with the plugs in the back of my Mega CD 2? There's line out and mixing. Can I use line out with megadrive games? What's the mixing plug about?

[edit] Oh and I saw a CD+G for the first time in my life. Pretty cool tech, I wish more audio CD had graphics data on them so they could display something when used on a disc player plugged to a screen (like a videogame console or a dvd player). The disc I played was Rock Paintings Sampler. I'm not a fan of most of the tracks tbh.

Which Genesis are you using?

I think you need a MD1 to use the mix cable. You can use the volume slider on the MD1 to change the volume of the sound effects usually using it and run the phono out on the MCD to a receiver so you can get really nice sound out of your MD and MCD games.

dat aftermarket value putting the "cent" in centy amirite?

At least, unlike Spider-Man 32x, this game is really damn solid, as i've played it down at Magfest before.

Oh, and speaking of 32x, just don't get one, unless you really wanna be a completionist like me. Only stuff that is still worth playing that can't be played easier somewhere else is probable After Burner and Kolibri. Maybe Space Harrier, but i think that's on the 360/PS3 Genesis collection.

Space Harrier got an arcade perfect M2 port on the Saturn, as well as an excellent 3D Classics M2 port on the 3DS.

Tempo, Shadow Squadron and Knuckes Chaotix are worth playing.

No doubt the 32X is weak, though.

Corrected for the 3DS version, but Space Harrier on 32x isn't very expensive. Sega Ages is around 150 last i knew. Not so affordable.

Also, Temp looks a lot better then it plays, Knuckles is overhyped, and Shadow Squadron....isn't actually too bad.

Not sure if you're aware, but Sega Genesis will not output S-Video unless modded to do so.
Thanks for reminding me. Forgot I got a specific Genesis for S-Video when hooked it up years ago. Dammit, time to learn to mod a 32X.

Well, too late, already got one. I wouldn't say I am completionist, don't really think I will ever get Web of Fire, but I did want to have my Ultimate Genesis setup going. Still on the look out for a Model 1 Sega CD so I can build my tower or power as well. Don't really know why, just something I've wanted to do since I was a kid.

The Saturn port was actually done by Rutubo Games. It was a great port, though!

Off topic: I just mindfucked myself when looking at Rutubo's list of games and realizing there was an Akatsuki Blitzkampf sequel that I never knew about!

Oh, whoops. I have the WD version and the port is so good I never checked, just assumed. Must've gotten mixed up with their PS2 Ages work.

I finally finished up Lunar: The Silver Star. One of the best, still.

I was contemplating on playing the PlayStation version right after to get a better feel for the differences, but I think I'm just going to scrap that idea and get to playing Eternal Blue, since I've never played either version of it. I may do Silver Star Complete still soon enough, or I might just watch the anime scenes, since that's about the only thing good that came out of that version.

I'm playing Cobra, the space adventure now. So far I quite like it, the text adventure genre makes it slow but the atmosphere makes up for it, I'm really fond of this universe. Y'all have to try it someday, it's a perfect game for a lazy evening when those twitch reflexes just aren't there.

I just wish there was an ASCII Grip made for the Megadrive, games like these are just begging for it!

learned about this one a while back from Gamesack, got excited till i saw the price...

My floor is about on the ground right now, watching the intro to Eternal Blue.

The difference between that and Silver Star, it's like it's on a completely different console.

I only played for about ten or twenty minutes or so (time to eat and all that) but I'm shocked. I'm shocked that I never played this until now and I'm shocked that I'm seeing everything and hearing everything come from a Sega CD.

I'm going to eat and pull a classic "stay up too late" gig tonight.

Is Knuckles overhyped? It shouldn't be. It's pretty assy.

It has some nice new gameplay ideas. But the whole thing comes off as a poorly executed budget title.

man Knuckles looks (and sounds) great! its just...empty is all, enemy-wise. thats very off-putting.

if you like Sonic 2's bonus stages, you owe it to yourself to see those ones too.

I know, and there have been no ebay listings for the PAL version since I started looking for it months ago. I want to buy it, but no one wants to sell it to me.

That shouldn't deter us from playing it though!

Its one i desperately want. Finally tracked down a copy of Shadow of The Best II for Sega CD, which is just hard to come by, but not really expensive or anything. Its more important, though, because its my 100TH SEGA CD game! -confetti-

Home stretch is real now, but i still got the big Keio hurdle left, which is actually the last big 100+ game i may have for any of the systems left, that and Cobra (I got Spider-Man 32x, MUSHA, Centy, Snatcher, World Series Baseball 32x, Radical Rex, Action 52, Pitfall 32x). Feel free to tell me what i'm missing from that, since i'd like to know, but i'm getting to be in the clear soon, and it feels good.

The second NeoGAF Retro Challenge!
Shadow Dancer: The Secret of Shinobi

jDyE6yII0snhF.jpg

The second game released in the "trilogy" for the Sega Genesis/Mega drive, Shadow Dancer proves itself to be the most challenging of the three, testing the player with true, one hit death arcade caliber gameplay!

And now for the rules:
  • All options are left at their default settings
  • Single credit only, no continues! Play until your life count is 0, and then pause at the very start of your 0 life. Alternate: Your final score when / if you defeat the last boss.
  • While this screen is displayed, take a picture of the screen with your user name written and attached to your TV / Monitor / display of choice. Only an actual picture of the entire display and name attached, taken by a camera/phone/etc. will count. No emulator screenshots!
  • Make sure to type your score in the post as well.
  • You can post as many times as you want, but of course your highest score before the deadline will be the one that counts.
  • No cheat devices, save states, or turbo controllers of any kind.
  • The length of the contest will be from Thursday July 24th until Thursday August 7th @ 11:59pm PST.You can post as many entries as you want during the challenge, but of course, only the highest score you posted will count towards winning.

Protips
  • Not everything you touch equals death
  • Shoot all the Ninjas!

So, I took possession of my new house on Friday, and today I started to set up the mancave/basement. Finally, I'll have a place to display/enjoy all my retro consoles! More pictures will be up when I finish setting everything up, but I thought you guys would be excited to see the first console I tested...

ugh...first go at Shadow Dancer (2 drink minimum enforced!), i had a good run until it fell the fuck apart at 3-2, with one hostage to go...i swear i used to tear through that level a lot easier. just under 290k...

Alright, here's my first entry for Shadow Dancer. I'm still not super happy with the score as It could be significantly higher. But due to fucking up in the last room before the final boss a good 4 times it'll have to do for now.

damn my dude, good job!

Thanks mang.

It was actually a no death run until i started trying to rack up some points in the next to final room with my extra lives. I screwed up and died really early on probably half my lives so there's still plenty of room for improvement.

Another tip is killing 46-47 ninjas during the bonus stages awards 10,000 points and not extra lives. That may be better than earning the extra lives and using them to rack up additional points. It may not be though, I'll have to try earning the extra lives and see how that goes.

I'll probably try again tomorrow and see if I can improve. If i hadn't wasted all my lives in the room before the final boss it could have easily been 50,000 higher. Unfortunately I didn't even beat the game because I used all my lives before the final room.

Awesome, one of my Sega CDs is working, thought I was going to have to fix the fuse, but loaded right up. And even better, RAM cart battery is still going. Now, to see if my Popful Mail disc is still good. Played the shit out of that game and the disc looks worse for the wear. Doesn't help that my little bros also played it, but didn't take care of it nearly as well.

It's battery powered!?! I've got saves on that thing. D:

Yes, since you also have a model 2 Mega Drive, you can use the line out for all genesis (including 32X) audio. In fact, I'd recommend it Mega CD audio comes out a bit clearly when using them.

Might not be, just assumed since almost everything else back then is, it would be too. Might crack it open later and let you know for sure.

we had Shadow Dancer on Arcade in my dad's old shop. I could do that game in one life and clear all the specials with no errors.

To be that awesome again :(

Nice! I have a model 1 gen with 32x and model 2 CD as well. Word of advice, dont use the mixing cable/ports on Sega CD, the console sounds better when not passing through it.
