Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Nice! I have a model 1 gen with 32x and model 2 CD as well. Word of advice, dont use the mixing cable/ports on Sega CD, the console sounds better when not passing through it.

Oh definitely. I'm about 2-3 weeks away from ordering an XRGB Frameister (goodbye compo-shit!), and will be getting the cable for "Model 1 to 32x with stereo sound from the headphones jack" from Retro Console Accessories when I order my RGB cable.

Is Knuckles overhyped? It shouldn't be. It's pretty assy.

It has some nice new gameplay ideas. But the whole thing comes off as a poorly executed budget title.
Yeah, the level layouts literally bored me to tears. I've yet to play it all the way through. It has an interesting gimmick but very little execution. I know maybe Sonic Team didn't want to make Sonic 4, but it would have made a lot more sense sales wise at the time, and what Sega needed for the 32X. Also, I think history probably would have smiled more on Sonic 4 than Knuckles Chaotix.

At least, unlike Spider-Man 32x, this game is really damn solid, as i've played it down at Magfest before.

Oh, and speaking of 32x, just don't get one, unless you really wanna be a completionist like me. Only stuff that is still worth playing that can't be played easier somewhere else is probable After Burner and Kolibri. Maybe Space Harrier, but i think that's on the 360/PS3 Genesis collection.

Finally some backup on the 32x hate train. It just isn't worth it unless you are doing it for collectors sake instead of "getting good things that are fun to play" sake.

Damn forgot that launch price

It could have also meant it eventually getting games worth playing. :3

Haven't picked up that Trio power adapter thing?

Oh yeah that things a godsend but that's still a separate RGB cable and moving stuff around since I don't know how many entertainment units can fit the segazord/tower of power

Yea, seriously that retro trio cable is worth every penny.

Irish, if your entertainment center can't fit a fully transformed segazord then its time for a new entertainment center.

I wonder where he is today...

Anyway, looks like Shadow Dancer is going to be it for the next high score challenge. I'll get the post together and this time I guess we'll make the challenge last 2 weeks? What do you guys think is a good time frame, because 1 week seemed too short for most.

Here is:

Picked up this lot from a CL ad for $60. Think I did well with the shadow run and quackshot carts plus the stick. Already have a non tmss model 1 so this system will get sold.

Success and sadness combo lol.

The success - After messing around with a soldering iron for the first time, finally managed to remove the old solder and fuse, and solder in a new one. IT WORKS!

The sad part? The red access light just keeps blinking. If you put a disc in and turn the system on, it checks the disc, says press start, and then just sends you to the cd player screen and says no disc after sitting for abit.

It never says no disc at the main splash screen though, so not sure whats up with that. I only had 3 plugs to connect to the motherboard (a small, medium, and large size white plastic connector all in line with each other)...but i've noticed that some Model 2 CD repairs show an actual ribbon cable? Are there revisions that dont have that? I'd think it would be easy to notice if a ribbon was just ripped out or something crazy like that.

I'm not sure if the disc is even spinning.

EDIT: Its an MK4102 model if that helps.

I'm guessing thats how the spindle is supposed to look / nothing missing right?

Woah, what? Is it what it sounds like? One AC Adapter to rule them all?

I do take my 32X out, but I only do so because I have concerns about it being in my CDX. I need to cut some styrofoam spacers or something one of these days.

EDIT: IT IS! :O I can't feel my legs

Although I'm having trouble determining if they sell a CDX+32X version

They do have a CDX+32X version called the "X2". Their shop is a little different now from when I bought from them and is a little confusing to find it though. Looks like it is under the "Sega Power Supplies" section instead of the "Trio-Duo" section.

Try cleaning the lens with a qtip and alcohol. If that doesn't help try adjusting the laser pot.

Where is the the laser pot anyway? I've read a few mentions of the different adjustment pots, and saw some on the CDX video that Lukemorse uploaded, but I cant find an exact location. Im guessing its one of the yellow screw? There are three of them.

EDIT: Looking closer, there is a yellow screw on the laser itself:

I've never heard of that cable? Do you have a link to it?

Gen 1 headphone jack is easily the best sound quality, (and only way to get stereo). When I played Sonic 3 using the mixing cable set up I instantly had to switch back.

Do you have a high definition graphics model? I used to have a motherboard VA7 Model 1 genesis but the sound was garbage so I switched to HDG.

Going off composite but playing on a calibrated Sony Trinitron CRT :).

For real, do y'all just leave the 32x plugged in full-time and play Genesis out of it? I feel weird doing that

The 32x takes out the rainbow banding issue that effects many Genesis' picture quality, so yes.

The only downside is that you can't do master system games with the 32x attached, so it can be annoying switching them out.

What is this trio cable you guys are talking about?

IrishNinja

Yeah,see...once I get my power base back, I'd play more SMS than 32x now that I think about it
Also the color banding thing is negated by RGB

I do have a High Definition Graphics model. The sound is SWEET out of the headphones jack.

Here's that cable for stereo out of the Model 1/32x combo.

I've been waiting since 1995 to hold a real copy in my hands. While I've played it on virtual console, I can say without question playing it on a real genesis/mega drive feels very, very different. Is it nostalgia? Is it cause I'm playing in rgb? Is it because I'm fucking crazy and had to buy this? Not sure to be honest. What I am sure of is that I've been hunting for a real copy for far too long and would easily call this my greatest pickup in the last year. It is at top of my list on all time favorites, and will be played like crazy in the weeks and months ahead. Nobody made the system purr like the geniuses at Treasure.

Alien Soldier, Gleylancer, ELIMINATE FUCKING DOWN, and MUSHA on the same page.

Look out Neo Geo thread, we comin'

@GK:
Got it off ebay last week from a Toronto seller, so yeah, market price.

That being said, the whole package is in amazing condition. The seller told me he got it in a big lot five years ago or something - he had been sitting on it since as nobody was crazy enough to buy it at his store.

Edit: sixteen-bit, you crack me up man! But yeah, I'm going full Neo Geo collector and eating ramen for the next six months. ;-)

Or you can just toss the entire mushroom out and have a better package for it. :3

Also, 32x trollan aside, why did Elemental Master Shoot up in price? Someone make a vidoe about it, or just Renovation games going up in price like someone else mentioned?

Damn, I didn't notice that game went up in price so much recently. There's like no copies available on ebay either. I think I got mine for like $10 at the local game store last summer.

I got a like new (complete) copy of Elemental Master for $50 in the summer of 2013. How much is it going for these days?

As far as I'm concerned, it's harder to find than Musha, which I've seen and owned a few times in the last 15 years or so. I've never seen Elemental Master in the wild* in all my years of collecting. I've seen two or three Panic Restaurant, a couple Haganes, several sealed Chavez Boxing II, three Snatchers, several Popful Mails, two or three Mushas, etc. This is anecdotal evidence obviously.

*the wild for me = Quebec city, Ottawa area and Montreal.

Well its time to give up on cleaning the lens/messing with the laser pot. Just put the pot back to where it initially was (didnt turn it that much, just about 3 quarter turns each to test). Maybe I just need to install a new laser. Man, at this point, it really does seem like it would have been better to just buy a confirmed working one off ebay or amazon.

Just as a general question, if the system was working correctly, is the red access light supposed to blink constantly while sitting at the bios splash screen?

Does the laser assembly itself move, I had a 3DO and a Sega CD before where the gear the moved the laser assembly was broken.

Also if you haven't give this thread a read.

While unpacking all my old video game boxes (which haven't been opened in close to ten years), I found my OLD, hand-written, photocopied Mortal Kombat Genesis move list. I figured you guys would get a kick out of this, I must not have been the only one who had one of these (or something similar)

Note the infamous "blood code" written at the top.

Ugh I wish this revisionist trend with shitting on classic Sonic would cease already
To be fair, I feel like everything gets shit on on GAF like this to some degree these days.

Mainline Mario games get trashed for insane reasons despite being a franchise most sensible people would consider to have retained most of the quality it always had in the first place. "The physics aren't exactly the same as one particular old game I love and it just doesn't have the innovative qualities or lived-in open-world feel that I need in a freaking Super Mario game. 3/10 would not play again." The SM3DW reveal thread is literally one of the most infuriating things I've ever read on this forum. I remember being psyched as hell at the return of the full playable SMB2 USA cast + simultaneous co-op but all anyone wanted to talk about was "3DS up-port."

The main Gaming forum is just better-suited to drive-by potshots than anything else these days. I figure it's just a natural consequence of almost any closely-knit thread with legs getting shuffled off to Community; substantial discussion is just swept out of view too often.

I just wish people would take more time to talk at length about what they like, rather than try to elicit reactions out of people by spouting off ill-informed nonsense about what they don't, really.

SixFour you might be onto something, there's definitely more substance for me in community threads. so many of the more ignorant comments in gaming get repeated to meme-like levels that just really reinforce the idea that some like talking about games way more than playing them.

Forget about your old Power Base converter. A new one is coming. Soon.

ive been watching this at Sega-16! will likely get one at launch despite not owning many FM SMS games, but i won't like; i know i'll end up using my old one more for the look of it

I'm obviously not familiar with the guy, but why would he have any pull? Because of his association with the video game nerd?
His soft-spokeneness/subdued nature also rub me the wrong way. That Elemental Master video he did is also pretty boring by the way. As a mid 30s guy, I'm probably not the target audience though.

(Give me the Game Sack guys over this little dude anytime. Now THAT's good TV.)

Thanks for the tip on the Tri-power cord, was trying to figure out what the hell I was going to do with all of those power bricks.

Spent the evening playing some Genesis with my daughter (5), she doesn't really have the patience for the games yet. Also, I had her using my old ASCII Fight Stick, and she was having a problem hitting the buttons with just one hand. Damn iPad is getting her away from using a controller the right way.

She ended up playing Sonic 1, 3 and Spinball, and spending the most time with Spinball. Tried Taz, Escape From Mars and turned that off in like 5 minutes. Enjoyed Echo, but couldn't figure out what to do. So nice seeing her enjoy trying the games at least, she was super eager to pick out a game and put it in.
