Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

^I hate that goofy arranged SF2 music in the SNES version. It looks a hell of lot better than the Genesis one though. Uh-oh, we talking about ancient ports of SF2 and u know how I feel about that.

It's not even in tune. Listen to Balrog's music for example. That bell/electric piano/whatever sounds like it's at least a quarter tone out of tune. It's seriously mind-boggling how people sincerely claim they prefer that version. Must be some mighty powerful nostalgia goggles. This is like one of the most fundamental things you ought to get right in music and Capcom didn't fix things until the Super SF2 port.

I just wish the dungeon was more varied.

That's an important qualifier, thanks for bringing that up! I place a premium on atmosphere in games-- it's probably the #1 thing that gets me going. So my opinion of Shining in the Darkness might be higher than someone who focuses on other things. In the end, the game was made on a shoestring budget, and the "sameness" of the dungeon floors probably reflects that.

Blugh. So I had Biohazard Battle working and then now it doesnt work. Gonna go get some of this brasso.

Hey guys, what are your thoughts on Shining in the Darkness? I'm craving a Genesis RPG right now - the only one I've played is Phantasy Star 2 a few years ago.

I've never played a Shining game (Though I have Shining Wisdom ready for when my Saturn RGB cable arrives), and would like to start at the beginning. I know SitD is a lot different from the Force games, but I tend to like old RPGs, so dated combat/grinding doesn't bother me.

Thoughts? The game isn't outrageously priced from CiB...
Other than what has been said about SitD already, I would recommend Phantasy Star IV. It's much more streamlined and less grindy/old-school (in fact, it aged perfectly fine), and while I know you said you didn't mind this, unless you want these things then I'd certainly recommend PSIV. One of the best 16-bit RPGs, IMO. The sci-fi/fantasy mix gives it a truly unique atmosphere.

I just read about Brasso and it has a very slight amount of abrasiveness to it. I feel like thats the special ingredient about it

Amazing the weird controllers they came up with back in the day. Think these two have a bit of an identity crisis. Saw the Competition Pro at a thrift and figured it was Genesis at first glance but when I got it home realized it was an SNES controller. Then you got the SG Pro Pad which is quite the rip of an SNES design.

I had the 3DO version of that SG pro pad but it's black and had all 6 buttons. Crap controller.

I'm curious about the competition pad. I've seen the JP version (branded Honeybee) before. How is it?

also yay Gen-16!

All the buttons have a nice feel although the d-pad on mine is shot. The contacts on the inside have a stupid layout for the rubber to hit, almost like a seperate pcb and it doesn't sit in there well anymore so the d-pad has a very light feel to it.

As is customary when someone mentions Brasso, here comes my PSA.

If the buildup problem is severe, Dab a small amount on, spread it, and let it sit a bit. Wipe it off slowly. Otherwise just use an art eraser and wipe off the residue. No mess, no damage.

Don't slather a lot, don't get it on anything but the contacts, and don't rub vigorously and repeatedly until the black "grime" stops coming off. That's the thin, gold layer protecting your contacts from oxydation!

OK, that's it.

God damn is that terrible. Assuming that this video isn't some emulator fuckery, this is pretty emblematic of the "cheap 1st-gen MIDI synthesizer" quality that lower-end SNES music tends to exhibit.

Anyone who steps up to bat for any of the 16-bit SF2 ports has some damn serious nostalgia filters in play imo.

I just went against everything in that post. :O
I slathered and rubbed vigorously for at least a half hour, then cleaned the entire thing with alcohol. I used over a dozen Q-tips. Definitely rubbed it until all that "black gunk" came off.

I work at an artstore and we sell like 20 different types of eraser. I'm gonna do some extensive testing. We also have electric erasers that spin. I want to somehow wedge a slice of an ARTGUM eraser into a spinning electric eraser handle.

The game works, btw. Works great.

Its super WEIRD too. You play as a bug. I just bought it sight unseen after sixteen-bit's recommendation. Its kinda unfortunate that just as I got it working I'm sorta hooked on Steel Empire. Good shit. Contra is in the mail currently.

Arcus Odyssey, Super Fantasy Zone and Forgotten worlds on my list for my next spree.

You know, its actually been relatively affordable.

I've only spent about 200$ so far and have a complete Retro console setup with games, "good" hardware, composite cables, extra controller, 27in CRT etc..

Got the Taito remasters Ultimate Qix and Space Invaders '91.

Space Invaders '91 is nothing special from what I played, but I'm liking Ultimate Qix a lot.

Never said the game wouldn't work, just that the contacts now have no protection against horrible oxygen.

It shouldn't matter if you take care of it.

Generation 16 - Episode 013 is now live!

Fantastic! I've really been looking forward to this one.

I flew through your entire series in a flash when I first discovered it. It's extremely well put together, and a great watch.
It's even tuned me in to parts of the catalog I wasn't familiar with, which has been a pleasant surprise!
I can credit Generation 16 with re-igniting my love for the platform, and nudging me to get a system again.
I had not had one since the early 90's!

Road Rash! I want to start hunting for a nice copy of this and/or II...
Come to think of it, those two might be my all-time favorite EA games.

I've been picking up a few more games here and there, and finally finished reconditioning my Mega Drive.
I'll put up some pictures tomorrow. The console's been cleaned up inside and out, and so was the pack-in controller.
Was able to take care of my 6-button controller the same way a moment ago, but it still needs to be put back together.

It is always possible to get a dud. I got a copy of Grind Stormer at a flea market for $2 last summer and the cart wouldn't work no matter what I tried. I eventually swapped the chips onto another PCB I had from a crummy sports game and got the game to go that way. I believe that was related to Tengen using some bad PCB's on some of their later releases as I also have a copy of Gauntlet IV from Tengen that doesn't work.

It was excellent! I have to say, I got a little wide-eyed once Klax turned up for the second time, along with the story. Wow.
Great to see Strider rolling in, too! My brother and I put a lot of time on this version back in the day. Kind of crazy that new copies can still be found online!

Which version? World Warrior, Turbo, or Super.

I thought the Super music was pretty good. Dat Cammy theme.

Oh sorry if I phrased to contradict you. I kinda meant it in a humorous "oh no!!!" fashion. Genuinely appreciated your input. I wasn't sure I was doing any good at all while I was working on the game.

I'm thinking the next logical step is we figure out what substance is appropriate to recoat the contacts with.. at my work we sell some pretty absurd substances that I'm pretty sure are like liquid metal for metal embossing.

Six-button controller arrived.

This DPad is so much better than the one on all three of the three-button controllers I own, it isn't even funny. $10 well spent.

Hmm, that's interesting. The rest of the components will probably break down before oxydation becomes a real issue, lol =]

Awesome news! One of us.

It's sad that I've had this console since, like, 1994 or something (I got Sonic 3 with it, so it had to be around then), but am only now getting a controller with a good DPad, twenty years on.

3-button controller isn't bad. The only one I had that got stiff over time worked pretty much like new after I opened it up and did a little cleaning.

You should also be able to enter in the level select code in Sonic 3. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but I had a hell of a time getting that to work as a kid, and I suspect a shitty d-pad was to blame.

yeah, i grew up with the 3 button pad so i've a fondness for it, but i gotta admit, using the 6 one now i rarely revisit it. played the shit out of the 3 button arcade stick though

didn't even think that'd work, but that's pretty cool! glad to hear those games can be saved, and fuck, congrats on Grind Stormer for that amazing price!

Do any games actually use the Mode button for an in-game function? I know that it's possible, considering how Contra Hard Corps includes it in its button test.

I mean you gotta be feeling persistent. Had to desolder both chips which is a bit of a pain. I just figured at that price point I gotta get it going haha.

welp, revenge of shinobi was a bust...there's devilman but no bats, nevermind these bald flamehtrower guys. shame, there's a guy offering to trade 1.0 & something else for my loose bloodlines but i was hoping to swap another dude for CIB wonder boy 1, kinda torn now...i guess i could keep picking up cheap revenges when i see em and hope for the best though

Frogger was every bit as mean as i recall but drunkenly getting halfway through level 4 felt good, onto lost vikings

Fatal Fury 2 uses it as the taunt button.

haha that's a pretty dope use

agreed man, i can't see going any other route for that price

hnnghhh Immortal is...tricky, and Road Rash don't wanna boot even after the brasso. EA cases are tricky to get the board in & out but i gotta do it now.

also cheap-ass Feng Shui don't wanna boot with a game genie, hopefully the mod switch will make shit work when i get that done soon

dude elsewhere is selling an everdrive MD which i thought was cool till i looked up the Mega Everdrive....flash loading + save states sound awesome if i could ever find it for less than a million dollars

Those things really need a better naming convention, btw.

Would "Everdrive 1.0" and "Everdrive 2.0" be too much to ask for?

Grind Stormer is well-known to have used bad circuit boards. As you found out, though, the chips are fine; it's the boards that go bad.

Well, I got all hyped about Sega over the past few months, due in large part to the retro threads here, so I bid on and won a Sega CD on eBay. I just got it yesterday, hooked it up today, and it doesn't work. The discs won't even spin in the disc drive. I tell the seller this and ask for his address to return it, and he says, "The auction states that I was never able to get it to work."

His auction did state that, but his description in full was: "I picked this up from Funcoland in 1999. I took it home and and couldn't figure out how to hook it up. Took it back to Funcoland where they hooked it up properly, it worked, and the guy behind the counter and I played some Sonic game for about an hour (Funcoland was awesome...). Took it home and forgot how to hook it up. Put it in the box, put it in the closet, found it two days ago."

His description is meant to give the impression that it's a working system. It's just that *he* couldn't get it to work on his own. I'm more than a bit angry right now waiting for him respond trying to get out of it.
