Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

that's a good collection that can be had for beans these days, and compared to say the genesis collection on DC the sound's not nearly as bad...but there's tons of titles you'll miss out on! plus, the six button pad is fantastic.

What are the advantages/disadvantages to playing games from Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, as opposed to on actual Genesis hardware? I recently moved my 360 into the game room with the retro stuff, and it would be more convenient for switching between games (SoR, Sonic, Golden Axe, etc.), but I don't want it at the cost of audio/visual fidelity.

I'll be real with you woodypop. The emulation in SUGC is pretty bad. Foundation 9 / Digital Eclipse aren't known for their accuracy.

If it's convenience you're after, cop an Everdrive and put your legally backed up collection on there.

i think i passed on that one, the AGES collection was okay though

for real if you wanna play Phantasy Star I-IV, the Sonics & many other classics for like $5 on an actual system, it's fine cause you get what you pay for & the extras (arcade shinobi, interviews etc) are neat.

but there's a tradeoff for sure, and to be fair many of those greats can still be had for cheap, especially loose. just know what you're getting woody!

Rocket knight has been on my to buy list for years. I just found a nice complete copy on eBay for $20. Figured why not? I never was too impressed with Sparkster on my snes, but you gents have never steered me wrong.

It is official business, no doubt.

Currently the winning bid for a Contra HC cart at 18 dollars. My max was 22 so I'll see how it shakes out.. there's 26 hours left so I'm expecting to be outbid.

You guys have got me hot to trot on Alien Soldier too!

Bio-Hazard battle and a 6 button wired pad are in the mail for me.

What are some action RPGs i should keep my eye on?

Good luck on Contra, great f'ng game. Be prepared to be patient on Alien Soldier JP. I searched for almost a year to find a complete copy and then paid a hefty amount. I don't even see any on eBay right now.

Wait is there a difference between the regions? I haven't read about the game at all yet, just looked at some screens and ran a quick eBay search. There seemed to be quite a few US version at semi reasonable prices.

Yeah, go for it.

But seriously, it never came out in the US. Those are reproductions. It came out in Japan originally and was localized for PAL territories in 50Hz.

I don't even see any on eBay right now.

I see three, one without a manual at $150 and two completes for $227 and $306.

Action RPGs that im aware of (just listing whats out there):

Landstalker
Light Crusader
Beyond Oasis
Crusader of Centy
Exile (but thats probably better on TG16)
Arcus Odyssey

Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection is still a good buy even if the emulation isn't great.

Aside from a nice selection of Genesis titles, the inclusion of a couple arcade ports and Golden Ax Warrior is more than welcome.

Also I'm a bit of a fan of Growl, but only the arcade version.

It's a very silly game. You're basically playing as Indiana Jones on a mission to kill all poachers. This includes blowing them up with rocket launchers, laughing as they get trampled by stampeding animals, etc.

The uncensored arcade version is a trip. It's so ludicrous and wonderful, like every arcade game should be.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iAyq4SUdOq0

It's included in Taito Legends 2, I think.

It's worth playing through once, but it's not really a GOOD game.

Yep...not uncensored though. Granted the gory bits are just body parts getting strewn about due to explosions, trains, or animals but they add to the affect, sorta like the gory moments in Captain Commando and Cadillac's & Dinosaurs.

Oh and yeah..not a good game either but oh well.

Growl looks like a fun b-tier beat-em-up but i'd have to try the genny port before committing

great list, I'd add Shadowrun (still trying to get into this one) and Sword of Vermillion technically counts, since it's a hack & slash but beyond the ost it prolly doesn't age terribly well for most

is the Genesis/MD/MD II controller port pins standard across all console iterations? Got a MK-1653-50 that came with a MD II, hoping to pair with a inbound GENESIS HDG.
All Genesis consoles have the same controller ports. No worries there.

Hell, it's the same controller port as some earlier Atari consoles, like the 2600, and even some computers (Commodore ones like the C64 and Amiga, notably). Pretty sure controllers for those don't work on the Genesis, but the reverse (Genesis controllers on those devices) often does work (although apparently you can cause damage to the C64 attempting this - not the Atari or Amiga).

If only because of Retsupurae, yes, I do remember.

I think I've played Sonic with an Atari joystick at one point. Hooray for 1-button games.

hey man, outside of SF II i had zero reason to get a six button pad, i just used my arcade stick or old 3 button ones! ive since seen the light though, but nobody really told me there was compatibility issues...thank god for this weird button i guess

and yeah i wanna say i used the same 2600 joystick on my atari 400 & a few basic genesis games too, haha

Holly shit, this brings back memories! I was gifted this game as a kid. When i first saw it, i was like "What is this shit?" Then it became one of my most played games. lol

I should find a copy just for nostalgia.

Shining Force 2 and Phantasy Star IV are the best Genesis RPGs

Also a shame that they only came out in the cardboard boxes. >:C

I have never in the history of ebay won a video game auction that I didn't bit on in the last 20 seconds for. The people that I have seen that do win after setting in a bid long before the end are ones that bid over the current buy it now prices for whatever reason. Simply put bidding your max early just gives everyone else that wants that game a chance to over think how much they want to spend (also it gives you a chance to second guess how much you wanted to spend if you get overbid). Only time I bid early is when I want to make sure that item doesn't get taken down, or to see if it will remove the buy it now price.

doesn't this game lack the lock on for knuckles? I recall some bullshit about them not being able to do it before release, then the standalone xbla knuckles released not much later was able to do it.

If we're counting Monster World as action RPGs (and we shouldn't be) everyone needs to play Monster World IV.

Back on the hunt for Sega CD games I guess. Still missing a bunch, but most aren't too bad that I need, especially since I was able to get a CIB Eternal Blue for less than $100. Now just Snatcher and Time Gal (wtf?) that look to be difficult. Sure I'll find a couple more that surprise me.

If anybody wants to dump Snatcher for cheap, let me know :)

I'm pretty sure that is what happened. Can't remember exactly why they said the lock-on couldn't work, but it didn't.

Been screwing around a lot with VGM Music Maker, a Genesis tracker, lately. Just attempting to learn the ins and outs of it. Threw together some quick psytrance to try out real time reprogramming of instrument parameters (seems like every Genesis composer who did similar things with evolving sounds just divided them into lots of separate patches. Batman & Robin has like hundreds of instruments per track)

Thems the breaks. My policy on ebay bidding on video game related auctions; Only ever bid in the last 10 seconds (normally last 3 seconds, but I have gotten comfortable with my connection to wait that long), and bid the max I am willing to pay for the item. It makes it so that others can't second guess the price they are willing to pay or feel out what my max is if the seller has someone helping them bid it up. It also makes it so that I can't rethink my own max bid and pay more then I want.

It sucks for people that can't just drop everything for an auction, but it is hard to win any of the contested games any other way. Just the way game reselling goes now, where every single game of value is being watched by resellers for a low price as well.

That's what sniping sites are for. After missing out on way too many auctions (something ALWAYS comes up when an auction is ending, like guaranteed every time) Irish finally convinced me to be a giant cheater like he is.

I'm 99% sure that they just forgot about it. Combining the two roms is as simple as copying all the data from the Sonic 3 rom and pasting it at the end of the S&K rom. That's it.

Just goes to show you how much that collection is phoned-in.

Again though' segas put out worse collections with lesser games tho and yes only suckers play fair in auctions these days, sniping is stress free and you can save lots! Best part is paying with eBay bucks/discover reward $ etc too

It's not cheating. I've been using a sniper for the last few years, they are pretty great. Able to set and forget my bids and have them go at the last second. Also allows me to bid on items that are ending when I would normally be in bid. They only take a percent if I win, so only use them when I would still be getting a deal, but there have been quite a few times I've gotten stuff for 50% off the going rate. Got a bunch of deals on Magic cards this way.

Ethan Einhorn said that the time to get those games to work properly would have caused them to not have time to add the bonus games.

They still could have just forgotten, since that really does seem like a bullshit answer, but they did put that out there before the game released.

Personally, I think the collection was a good deal. Allowed me to keep my shit packed and still enjoy those games, annd they came out to like $1 each, much less than Wii's VC. The emulation isn't perfect, but we have had worse ports.

The end result sounds quite good. Reminds me a lot of old DOS AdLib music, too (yes, I'm aware both the OPL from that and the YM2612 are FM synth, so it's not entirely a coincidence).

Wii VC. The original Wii and not Wii U in Wii mode, is a great option for a retro gamer who owns a Wii and wants to sample the Genesis catalog. Games are 8 bucks flat and you get native resolution. The emulation might have been done by M2, whom do amazing work and do also did much of the Sega Ages stuff.

While the VC doesn't have a full Genesis catalog, you have a good selection of classic on there.

How reliable are Mega CD machines? I don't know why but I really want to play Terminator on it. I don't even own a Megadrive though. Yet.
