Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Something was fucked up with that Genesis's mod. The S-video was coming through with a really weird red tint on everything.

I want to mod a 32X for S-video!

see that's weird, cause i used it for a while before getting into RGB and didn't have that issue, except when i had a cable with some bent pins i wanna say. you sure it wasn't the cable?

for now though, RGB use on it just causes some weird reset loop. i'm borrowing gunsmith's model 1 for the time & trying out its lesser soundchip to see what that's like firsthand.

Not bad at all. I just can't get myself to buy Japanese copies of games unless that is the only place it was released.

Most japanese releases are cheaper, in better shape and work flawlessly on a US genesis.

Also 99% of the time, the boxart is so much better.

Then you have odd situations like El Viento or V-Five which are way more expensive in japanese despite beeing much more "common" than the US versions :(

Oh I know. I just can't convince myself to want to go that route.

I don't want to tell you what not to buy! Try them out first!
Oh I will, but I tend to take suggestions from those who tried the games. Even for bad games I may have a chance of liking them, but in my experience that's pretty rare. I will get into the Valis series because I saw Game Sack's vid on it.

Anybody here ever play Traysia? I don't remember much about it (an elementary school friend owned a copy) apart from having an Ultima-style battle system, but I do own a copy that I'm itching to play...

I played and beat it back in the day. I remember really liking the battle system and story (for some reason I thought it was really cool a character was named Magellan too). I also recall the graphics were not great at all. The story had a nice "twist" at the end which surprised me at the time, but I was probably just too young to realize it was predictable. I've always kinda wanted to replay it, but not sure if I'd have the patience for it now.

was testing out peripherals today (got a 4 player adapter on the cheap!), local gaffers gunsmith & bishopcruz let me grab an Alston Megaverter ver 1.0 which lets you use an SNES pad on your genesis if so inclined - tested it with Sonic 1 & it worked like a charm, only it added some noticeable lag to jumping so i don't know how much use it'll get, but it's a neat option anyway

Everyone knows that the SNES pads don't support blast processing.

So there's no good version of Valis 2 to buy nowadays? Guess I'll buy Valis 1, 3 and 4 within a year or so.

Not on Genesis. Valis 2 was released on Turbografx-CD in the US. I vaguely remember playing it at a friend's place once and it wasn't bad.

Holy shit! Today's been very oddly productive on recovering our games from back in the day.

First, I find out that my brother has actually kept all of our old Mega Drive games. He handed me a big box today. Even added a couple of Genesis games he picked up sometime in the last 5 years!

It's kind of a crazy mix: a handful of genuine Genesis games, another handful of genuine Brazilian Tec Toy Mega Drive games, and quite a few bootlegs (which were so prevalent where we lived). All in the family for some 20 years, haha.

I'll put up some pictures here soon, I think you all might get a kick from this franken-load.

If all this wasn't enough, getting these games also awoke my wife's nostalgia for her old Game Gear.
We rescued it this afternoon from an old closet, with 8 games. The console's going to need some work, but I am committed to revive it.

Now I just need my ye olde Nomad to turn up again.

The difference between El Viento and Valis games is that El Viento is actually a good game.

^damn, i need a day like that...congrats!

on ABF's recommendation @ sega-16, i got this 4 player adapter - works great on Gauntlet 4, but not yet in General Chaos? gotta sort that one out

With the 2-wire adapter, the Multi setting on the switch on the thing is for Sega-tap games, and the Extra setting is for EA games (like General Chaos), I believe.

i dunno, man...El Viento tosses a lotta enemies at you, and you gotta memorize patterns to advance. it's pretty hard!

ah, gonna try this tonight - thanks for this!

I've never soldered anything.

Watch a few youtube videos on how to solder, practice a day or two on dead boards, and you should be good to go.
Depending on the encoder your Genesis has, the s-video mod can range from "extremely easy" (CXA1645, MB3514) to "very easy"(CXA1145).
It has to be one of the most beginner friendly mods out there.

Be careful, there's one exception, though: some models have an encoder (KA2195) that's unable to output s-video. This one needs to be swapped, which requires desoldering. And desoldering can be a bit tricky if you have no experience.

I didn't play it for too long but from what I remember, the impression I'm left with, is that it wasn't as polish or smooth as a SNES RPG but that I was impressed by the down to earth scenario of the intro. It introduces the game as the story of a guy who leaves his village and girlfriend/fiance with some travelers for some quest, with the hope of coming back to her. It's nothing new but it was a nice change from the usual super hero going on a quest to kill the dragon / evil king or the typical evil king turning the peaceful land into hell. Controls and interface felt too stiff compared to a Shinning Force, which was ultimately why I stopped playing.

I think I have been lurking this thread too much. Last night I dreamt that my brother found his old model 1 Genesis with a bunch of games and let me have it all for $3.

Woke up in a cold sweat O_O

After many years trying to find out a game's title I played for Genesis years ago. I finally found out.

Atomic Runner.

Did anyone play that game?

Yeah, it's by Data East and it's pretty good! It's a sorta-remake of an old arcade game called Chelnov, and it got a spiritual sequel for arcades/PSX/Saturn called Wolf Fang.

Had to hook the 32x back up to play it but it works and looks nice in RGB.

It's a really cool game, better than the arcade original. I got the JP version a year or two ago.

Yes that game was fantastic! I always loved the run animation, cracks me up every time.

I played the game at friends, but I never remembered the title. Looks pretty affordable too.

looks pretty cool but also really easy...

Slick in that Euro computer game-kind of way and has lots of sprites for all those explosions and particles, but gameplay looks pretty pedestrian for its time. Would've been a bit of a snooze with just that one auto-rifle weapon when going up against even the older Turricans or '93-'94 shooters, like Contra: Hard Corps and Gunstar Heroes, and their relatively massive variety in weapon firing behaviors and appearances.

I need to get the MSX version of that.... but chances that I'll ever find a copy seem low.

So I might end up settling with the Mega Drive version eventually.

Hardcore (unreleased) by DICE

4 years since the demonstration and still no signs of a public release, unfortunately.

Yeah I think Psygnosis canceled it because it looks boring as fuck. Typical average Amiga game from that time (Like Lionheart and others).

Can't hold a candle to the likes of Turrican 3, Mega Turrican (MD version of T3), Midnight Resistance and so on

It's prety though, and it shows it was made with the Amiga in mind

I miss Pinball Dreams :(

Uh, it probably holds up really well compared to the vast, vast majority of the Psygnosis portfolio at the time. It was cancelled in bulk with a bunch of other games because they weren't comitted to the 16-bit market any more.

Well, I finally got my money refunded by eBay on that dud Sega CD a guy shipped me and refused to let me return it. I had to open a case against him, but eBay came through for me. It turns out the same guy sold a dud Dreamcast to someone else, listed it as "unused," and wouldn't accept their return either.

Anyway, I ordered another Sega CD from a guy who said his worked fine because he played Lunar on it 2 weeks ago. It came in the mail today, and I was delighted to see this one actually boot up. However, we have another problem...

This spindle was sitting loose inside the disc drive when I opened it. I set it aside and put a disc in, but the system won't read it. I tried putting the spindle back in the slot where it's supposed to be, but it won't stay in place. It just falls out. Does anyone know anything about repairing/replacing a broken spindle for the Sega CD? The seller said I could return it, but I'd prefer to just fix it if it's not too complicated.

I finally took some pics of my OG cartridge haul, which my brother recently sent back my way in a big cardboard box.
I had not seen these carts since the 90's, so it's been a bit of a flood of memories once I started looking at what I had.

To begin, these are the genuine carts:
World of Illusion and Sonic 2 used to be rental copies, which I bought from the local shop we used to rent from all the time. We loved those two, and they also happened to be genuine (rare where we lived). Jurassic Park I bought many years later, for the Nomad. S&K and Quackshot were trades with friends that no longer cared for the platform.

The Mega Drive games are genuine Tec Toy releases from Brazil. They were fairly expensive back then, but I could justify it to have a shot at the real thing. They translated everything, even the "welcome to the next level" campaign! Scooby Doo Mystery is a very interesting game: a full blown point and click adventure game that only lacks an actual mouse peripheral (and maybe a touch of internal memory, password saves are terrible here). The style is more than inspired by the old Lucasarts games of the genre, which I've always loved.

Unique cart with additional hardware within? Not a problem, made in Brazil all the same!

Next up, the fakes, which vary a fair bit on how convincing they look. They are all shaped like Genesis carts, but sport some unusual details:

No screws in the back (how is this thing holding together?), CAUTIO!

This one's been through a lot. It's shockingly heavy, too. They must have made the board out of stone.

These next few were the biggest surprise! I had completely forgotten that I'd created custom covers, somewhere around age 10. I made these with ballpoint pen, markers, and complemented some final touches with a scanner and a desktop printer. Toe Jam & Earl is genuine (and beat to shit), but the rental place had long lost the original box. So I fixed that. :)
It's pretty funny looking back, I even added all kinds of detail like Sega quality seals, bar codes, review quotes, even the small print!

Bonus round: these were purchased by my brother over the last 5 years. Great taste!

Did you try some super glue. Looks like the tabs are just broken that hold it on top.

Damn this thread, finally dove in and picked up a model 1 system at a local Swap Meet for $5. Pretty good condition but no cables or controller.

My question to you guys is: should I bother paying a premium for the Sega brand power supply. ($15 from a local retro guy I know) or just get an eBay bundle with a generic AC adapter that also works for Nes and Snes and includes composite cables for $9.99 shipped? Any danger in that?

I know the system was only $5 but I feel lucky to have found one in decent condition.

That 3rd-party multisystem power cable is fine for NES, but on Genesis it generates a distracting low hum from the audio output. Don't skimp on the power adapter.

Ok yeah that would bother me thanks for the info, glad I asked.

Guess I'll be visiting "Nintendo Dan" this week for the official adapter.

3rd party composite is ok?

Here it is :) any recommendations on cleaning it?
